..with all the immigrants who've come to the UK over the past few years?

Given that I suspect you think there are far too many here and that they are a major cause of our current housing and jobs shortage?

Just asking! :-)

UKIP are pretty rude also. They play to one of British people's greatest weaknesses - xenophobia.

Controlled immigration is not xenophobia.

It's common sense as mentioned by both the Labour and Conservative parties recently.

Retropear · 26/05/2014 23:23

Yes ditto,I'm off to bed too.Has been interesting though.

mijas99 · 26/05/2014 23:27

And why do they want controlled immigration? Because they think there are too many foreigners

Sorry to break it to you but the UK doesn't have any more foreigners than any other Western European country. So why the issue?

Scapegoating and xenophobia

You really don't understand do you ?

I'll wait for someone with a grasp of the issue at hand.

*The figure quoted on here of 2.2 million Brits living and working in Europe should drive some sort of naive altruism from the voters at home?

That's just not how it works.*

Not altruism, but if the UK leaves the EU many of those 2.2 million brits will not have the right to live or work in the countries they are currently settled in. If this happened in the near future it would force me to move back to the UK with 2 dependant small children, I would have no partner to support us as he would not be welcome. I would be a huge drain on public funds. I'm English but my children are half Swedish and I would speak Swedish with them. I believe the UK would be much better off keeping the immigrants who are settled in the UK and who actually want to be there.

andmyunpopularopionis · 27/05/2014 08:32

Manic.

It is different. A non - European can only come here if they have a visa (usuallt short term) or can get ancestral visas due to grandparents being english ( or European because of the EU .. oddly enough a person with british grandparents can be denied a visa but a person with European grandparents cannot) They have no access to state benefits like jsa. Dla etc and are entirely responsible for themselves financially. They can use the schools and NHS etc

I am baffled by the argument against free movement in Europe being "well we don't speak other languages so it's no use to us", for all the world as if this were an unchangeable fact. Or as if all the people who come here from non English speaking countries came out of the womb with a second language, rather than having put the effort in to learn it.....I do think our woeful language teaching in state schools has a lot to answer for that people seem to genuinely view this as an impossible block to living elsewhere.

Backinthering · 27/05/2014 08:46

Alconleigh superb point. I'm currently trying to learn Dutch in the hope of a move to Rotterdam in a few years. Not happy at the thought that I may not be able to if the UKIPpers get their way.

LumpySpacedPrincess · 27/05/2014 09:28

The benefits of immigration need to be discussed more. Without the contribution of immigrants we would have to make even harsher cuts to public services. The people I know who voted ukip have never haven't experienced anything bad because of immigration, quite the opposite.

angelos02 · 27/05/2014 09:47

I don't see why we just don't massively limit access to things like education and the NHS for immigrants to ensure only people that can support themselves fully come here. No access to state education for the children of immigrants for example.

Lemiserableoldgimmer · 27/05/2014 09:55

So allow people to bring their famines here to work and pay taxes but deny their children access to free education - which we regard as a basic human right for our children regardless of what their parents have contributed to the economy?

:-(

If the NHS. Was massively limited I'd imagine countries with a reciprocal agreement would not offer free healthcare to immigrats from the UK.

I have cost tge Swedish healthcare system a huge amount of money, free IVF, a pregnancy with lots of extra scans and appointments, a birth ( very nearly elcs) ongoing gynecological care, ds was ill in hospital for a week when he was a newborn. The level of care here is amazing, private rooms at all times in the post natal department, private room for ds ( with beds for me and dp) when ds had rs virus. I'm sure I have cost the Swedish health system a huge amount more than the average EU immigrant in the UK.

Limiting healthcare is dangerous not only to the individuals who can't access healthcare but also for theuuk population as a whole, people with untreated tuberculosis or hiv have a much higher chance of infecting other people, families not able to access vaccinations will increase the number of unvaccinated people and make the risks for the rest of the population greater.

LumpySpacedPrincess · 27/05/2014 10:12

It always makes me chuckle when you think the very name England derives from the Angles, who were a bunch of immigrants.

Abrico · 27/05/2014 10:12

For a lot of people (2.2 Million?) such as my self and I imagine Ikea, this is quite an emotive issue. The rise of UKIP and similar parties across Europe makes me very uncomfortable on a personal level, because it makes me wonder where I and my family "belong" according to those who have voted UKIP.
I have a british passport (single nationality), was born in Switzerland, brought up in France, currently I am living in Germany and will move to Holland this Autumn. I do not feel particularly British, but if the UK withdraws from the EU, some political parties may at least try to make people like me move "back home", and will most likely make it much harder for us to continue living in our country of choice.

I also have a son who does not have British nationality, despite both DH and I holding a British passport. Where does he "belong"? If according to nationalistic rhetoric being spouted across Europe at the moment, I am supposed to be living in the UK, what about him? Is he supposed to stay in Germany? Where does the family as a whole "belong"?

What this whole election has shown me is that families like mine are seemingly not welcome anywhere, and I find that sad and worrying.

LumpySpacedPrincess · 27/05/2014 10:24

Exactly Abrico, those people who voted ukip to send a message to Europe really need to think about the message they are sending to people such as yourself. It doesn't take a lot of research to see how unpleasant ukip are. If you voted for ukip and you were aware of their stance on other issues then you must agree with them. Sad
