and apparently similar results across Europe.

Front Nationale have done particularly well in France. Guardian is reporting similar successes for far right parties in Greece and Denmark.

I am unnerved.

Good, I was under the impression they would just introduce an Australia style immigration policy. Tbh I'm more worried about some of their other policy's- maternity leave, discrimination laws and getting rid of "political correctness"Hmm

FidelineandFumblin · 26/05/2014 00:47

(but i'm still a bit Shock at the sheer number of votes they have got)

FidelineandFumblin

A simple referendum would have stopped UKIP in their tracks.

Deals will be done soon and the spivs in parliament will offer tribute.

Smilesandpiles · 26/05/2014 00:50

I wonder what the other parties will do now? It's only a year or so until the next election...

FidelineandFumblin · 26/05/2014 00:51

UKIP is quite clear that no EU nationals would be expected yo leave the country. It is not about repatriation at all so let's be clear about that

Wet That's the point - it won't happen.

So what is the point of UKIP existing to get us out of the EU because of immigration?

To control immigration now.

Not just allow it to continue unabated.

Fram · 26/05/2014 00:56

It won't happen in the general. In the local elections on thursday, in our authority, in all wards UKIP came 3rd each time, yet our region have elected 3 UKIP MEPs. I think people are happy to vote for them for EU parliament, because it seems removed from our day-to-day lives. People won't vote for them when it comes to having a daily influence.

FidelineandFumblin · 26/05/2014 00:56

Sorry caruthers still sounds like a giant exercise in futility and petulance to me.

In 1999 or 2003, I would have disagreed but could have seen a point, but now?

And getting out of Europe means our laws can no longer be overturned by EU ones. There is no doubt about it they are moving towards Europe being one country and probably ruled by a parliament in Germany. If that's scaremongering then so be it.

FidelineandFumblin · 26/05/2014 00:57

Yes Fram I think you're right - it's the sense of remove.

It's a terrifying protest vote, these MEPs won't disappear following the General Election next year. These people will be in post for five years.

I'm feeling very alternative this night, and not in my usual, good, way. I think I rather naively underestimated the voting public.

FidelineandFumblin · 26/05/2014 01:05

Four seats to UKIP in the SE, that does surprise me

Can't deny that. But UKIP domestic success in the GE would be far more significant and now that my initial panic has receded, I really don't think it can happen Blue

OP posts:
mrsruffallo · 26/05/2014 01:18

why terrifying? nowt wrong with eurosceptism

BlueKarou · 26/05/2014 01:19

Agreed, I don't think we'll see voting this extreme next year. Not to mention that turn out should be higher for the Generals.

I just wonder what this will mean for Europe; all the Euro-Skeptics rising in number and elected in anger.

mrsruffallo · 26/05/2014 01:26

I know, I can't imagine how european parliament is going to function

ilovesooty · 26/05/2014 02:17

I can't imagine either, at least in terms of UK represention, given the appalling attendance records of ukip MEP s.

shockinglybadteacher · 26/05/2014 02:29

shrug It's unfortunate, but recessions are a breeding ground for the far right.

Scotland got one UKIP MEP (who seems to be a bit of an intriguing character) which is an unpleasant reality. However I am yet to see this as likely to transfer to the general election in 2015 - Euros always throw up some weird results. Or the referendum in September, which I am more concerned with. We just don't know and have to stay in the game and keep fighting.

There is something which I would like to ask UKIP supporters here (actually, a number of things, but I will keep it to one). I have heard that in votes in the EU parliament, UKIP MEPs either abstain on principle or vote "No" to everything. Are either of these true?

FidelineandFumblin · 26/05/2014 02:39

It's unfortunate, but recessions are a breeding ground for the far right.

Ironic though, that much of the popular "resent your neighbour" feeling that contributed to tonight's result was deliberately whipped up - by the conservatives.

Am very glad to live in Edinburgh with results as they should be

Labour
SnP
Conservatives
Lib dems
Then UKIP

It is all very scary especially having a DD with disability.

Am strongly considering Yes vote in referendum now.

FidelineandFumblin · 26/05/2014 02:49

Please don't cut as off Fanj! That'll make it worse here and then you guys will still be attached to us.

Well I didn't want to originally but feel somewhat forced in that direction by recent events.

I would probably rather not be independent in an ideal world..

I think it's probably a done deal after these results tbh. Just hope it can work.

FidelineandFumblin · 26/05/2014 02:58

Hmm.

I wonder what wil happen if a bunch of us try to migrate north of the border?

Looks like the London result is (finally) imminent.

FidelineandFumblin · 26/05/2014 02:59

I mean - I wonder how big a bunch of us trying to migrate to Scotland would cause a problem?
