and apparently similar results across Europe.

Front Nationale have done particularly well in France. Guardian is reporting similar successes for far right parties in Greece and Denmark.

I am unnerved.

the rise of the extreme right in Europe plus what's happening in Russia makes me very very scared to be honest

Yes. That is a sobering thought.

It's Labour's failure to stand up for this that is the problem totally agree but I would also say that they have mainly taken tory seats - and Labour has more local councillors now than the other put together - so even doing badly they are still doing well

RazzleDazzleEm · 26/05/2014 00:03

Interesting, Guy just said UKIP wouldn't sit with FN, but they wouldn't sit with golden dawn.

caruthers · 26/05/2014 00:03

yes - agreed ...so you can't pretend to speak for all voters smile - whilst condemning 'spin' !

I never wrote that ALL voters have spoken.

But thanks for the spin that doesn't work :)

gordyslovesheep · 26/05/2014 00:03

Golden Dawn are not 'eurosceptic' they are neo nazis ...

gordyslovesheep · 26/05/2014 00:04

Oh I am sorry I must have misread this post of yours

Voters want out of Europe and restrained immigration my bad

FidelineandFumblin · 26/05/2014 00:05

caruthers Isn't it too late for 'restrained immigration' even for those who want it?

We are only a generation or two from the virtual disappearance of distinct ethnicities anyway and then it becomes largely academic or mainly about languages spoken.

Greece's top winning party is far left rather than far right I thought? Still anti-european I think.

I am deeply uneasy that people are protesting against the EU by voting for UKIP. It makes no sense to me, giving them any sort of power.

caruthers · 26/05/2014 00:06

You did misread it...I didn't say all.

But a fairly substantial amount i'm sure you'll agree.

Which is the point of democracy no?

gordyslovesheep · 26/05/2014 00:06

interesting to see what 'restrained immigration' would mean Europe wide ...all those Brits returning here wanting jobs and housing ...

gordyslovesheep · 26/05/2014 00:07

well just under a 3rd :) with 2/3rds voting against them :)

FidelineandFumblin · 26/05/2014 00:07

(I can feel the beginnings of a breed for tolerance plan in my head)

OP posts:
caruthers · 26/05/2014 00:07

FidelineandFumblin It's not about ethnicities it's about resources.

To be honest this has been done to death and both the Labour party and the Tories admit they have got it wrong.

The referendum that will come will be the final arbiter.

caruthers · 26/05/2014 00:08

well just under a 3rd smile with 2/3rds voting against them smile

That's more than enough isn't it?

Are you worried over a referendum?

Springheeled · 26/05/2014 00:09

It's about resources- yes in a country where the rich are growing exponentially richer, it is about resources. It's not immigration that is the problem, it's inequality.

gordyslovesheep · 26/05/2014 00:10

nope not at all worried about it

more concerned about the rise of fascism in Europe - as most sane people would be

SmiteYouWithThunderbolts · 26/05/2014 00:10

The surge of far-right Euro-sceptic parties across Europe is really very frightening. Some of them make Farage look almost civilised. Almost.

Still. Molly Scott Cato is now Green Party MEP for the SW region, and there are still hopes that Keith Taylor and Jean Lambert will hold on to their seats. So it's not over yet.

I saw a lot of split votes in the ballot count on Friday; huge numbers of people voting locally for Greens AND Ukip on the same ballot sheet. That says to me that a good wedge of the electorate are disillusioned with the traditional 3 parties but don't know where to direct their support instead.

The BBC's coverage of the Green Party has been appalling and there is an online petition regarding it. After the SW region declared and the Greens officially overtook the Lib Dems (who as yet have no MEPs), the BBC's followed with a 10 minute interview with... a Lib Dem MP. Of course.

Anyway, I'm going off on a tangent now! I have a strong suspicion that if turnout were higher, Ukip wouldn't be anywhere near as popular.

gordyslovesheep · 26/05/2014 00:11

I know UKIP have no qualms about sharing a platform in the EU with fascist but surely most normal people would find the National Front and Golden Dawn unacceptable

caruthers · 26/05/2014 00:12

The left are using the fascist angle to stifle debate and of course halt a referendum.

It's not working.

Millibland has admitted Labour got immigration wrong.....the talks will happen now which is a good thing.

The Euro sceptic votes across Europe could/should be a catalyst for change.

FidelineandFumblin · 26/05/2014 00:12

Yes but it amounts to largely the same thing caruthers.

I can't see how the mechanics of leaving the EU could possibly work. Would everyone already living outside their own country be allowed to remain in a one-off amnesty? Or would their be riots and repatriations and stampedes?

It's either frightening or pie-in-the-sky.

OP posts:
Springheeled · 26/05/2014 00:12

How to get turnout higher? I agree, if if were then UKIP would be in a far worse position.

RazzleDazzleEm · 26/05/2014 00:12

I know UKIP have no qualms about sharing a platform in the EU with fascist

But Farage has just been asked about joining them and he said 100% no, it was never a possibility and it will never be one Confused

FidelineandFumblin · 26/05/2014 00:13

^there

OP posts:
caruthers · 26/05/2014 00:13

gordyslovesheep I am more than happy that the BNP leader lost his seat.

Springheeled · 26/05/2014 00:13

No caruthers, the left are saying fascism because it IS fascism, make no mistake about that.
