You know the people I'm talking about, always talking about "blue sky thinking".
Or instead of saying they need to contact someone they say "oh I need to reach out to Jeffrey"

Then you have the people who just take it too far and start using bastard buzz words outside of work. A friend mine told me "you know Frizz you really should reach out to A N Other, they'd really love to hear from you".

IT'S TALK FFS - not "reach out" they're not falling off Everest. Angry

So what's the most annoying bastard buzz words you've heard

I am getting wound up by everyone being interviewed on the radio at the moment starting their sentence with "So"
That one irritates me too Blib3. It immediately makes the speaker sound less literate than they are

As in "What did you do this weekend?"
Answer "Yeah, so I went to the beach".
[shudders]

"I'll buzz you over an email" Hmm
Oh, you mean you'll send me an email?! Arse.

"you made that your own" Ugh!
[PMT and this thread don't mix well, I'm feeling decidedly twitchy now]

Lagoonablue · 15/05/2014 15:43

'Across the piece.' I don't even know what that means.

Summerbreezing · 15/05/2014 15:44

We had a consultant in once who kept saying 'and the cunning plan is' before outlining some boring bog standard approach he'd come up with to something.

Really really irritating.Angry He also kept offering people polo mints I think they were really brainwashing drugs.

VenusDeWillendorf · 15/05/2014 16:52

I adore all these lovely new words and phrases. It's evolution innit?

Not that I use them mind, as I'm more of a miss marple kind of gal, but they're all pretty cool imvho.

I also love the way some people call 'curtains', "window treatments" I know, I know, but don't you think it leaves room for innovation?! I mean I still have my Christmas garlands up over the dining room windows..... Very much window treatments at this stage!

Our director is currently obsessed with "finding synergies" all the time. You can't talk to people either, you "engage" them.

The latest one that was all over the minutes of the last meeting was "taking stock". We need to do more stock takes and after 3 months we'll take stock of what we've done. I work in a consultancy company - there is no retail element, no product to sell and no materials used. There is no stock whatsoever, it's just utter bollocks!!

StraddlingTheFence · 15/05/2014 17:46

Yes, to so many of these.

Worse still, as someone else mentioned, is out of date buzz words. I used to work for a man who over used the phrase hot cakes (as in, "they sold like hot cakes") I think I could have coped if it was retail, but he was running a charity badly Hmm He also massively over used step-change. Which as far as I could tell meant "I want to go straight to here on the business plan, without bothering with all the boring development bits in the middle". Don't rush to blame the consultants either. I was the consultant in that situation.

Interesting to see wow. I've noticed that DS's school is very big on wow. I'm guessing OFSTED are to blame? It appears on newsletters and even in the DC's vocabulary. DS had a doctor's appointment, so was late in recently. I said "I'm afraid you'll miss carpet time" (he's reception) and he replied with "good, I don't like all that wow stuff. It's too noisy and quick. I can't think."

My boss has recently discovered the word delta. Direction/intention or plan will do, thanks. No deltas here.

Alisvolatpropiis · 15/05/2014 18:15

"The belt and braces approach". What's wrong with saying "making sure everything has an electronic copy".

I'm going to grind my teeth to dust over that one.

SwedishEdith · 15/05/2014 18:32

Following on from window treatments what about door knobs and letterboxs being door furniture.

Our leadership team were in town today. I give you:
Paradigm shift
Scape goating (which autocorrect wants to change to scape gloating)
Maxing the mix
Paying it forward
Breakout session (I wanted to escape)
Dare to win
Incentivisation
Thought shower

hossburger · 15/05/2014 22:18

Oh god, this is great.....

Hope not been covered already...but..

Instead of just updating each other, let's have a "temperature check "
Or some "top tips"

FFS.....grow. Up.

hossburger · 15/05/2014 22:21

And, yeah, the starting sentences with"so" thing.

Makes me wasn't to hurl.

Breakout sessions, make me want to doodle, be grumpy and go to the loo until session ends.

I am encouraged to see so many of you calling out the issues. It's an entirely positive conversation.

cerealqueen · 15/05/2014 23:17

I remember starting a new job in the NHS and hearing an expression about working in "silos" Had no clue what it was, had to look it up. Of any word which built up, barriers, that was it.

BertieBotts · 15/05/2014 23:19

This has been bothering me for ages, but, doesn't "penal" mean "relating to punishment", how can a punishment be penal, isn't it already penal just by being a punishment in the first place? :(

Please help this has been bothering me since I first saw the thread.
