Here we go! Thread five! Thread four filled in one month!

Here is a link to thread four & you can work back from there.

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/2017939-Nest-of-Vapers-we-continue-to-not-BU-to-carry-on-vaping?pg=1

We are all always happy to answer any question. No question is too daft or unreasonable! We all know what a minefield of terminology it is when you first take up vaping.

Here is Allergic's great summary for anyone who is starting vaping:

""A very simple guide for those who have been a bit overwhelmed by all the variety discussed on this thread. Experienced vapers either ignore, or check for errors please!

There can be a trade off to be considered around cost, variety, overall experience and hassle.

The cigalike ones are the simplest to deal with in that you just unscrew one cart & screw in another. These tend to be the type that you can buy at the local market or shopping centre for a comparatively cheap initial purchase, but the carts they use can be very expensive and tend to be limited in flavours/strengths depending on brand. They can be useful in that they are small, look the most like "real" cigs, and are the most hassle-free, but the experience really isn't as good as other methods and the cost is higher.

The next step is to have a battery and disposable tank type system (CE4 in my case) where you buy the different liquids and fill the tank yourself. The batteries last a few months to a year (about the same or a little longer than the cigalikes) and the tanks (clearomisers) last anything from a couple of weeks to a couple of months - this can be extended by cleaning, but the coils inside do eventually pack in. This method is much cheaper and gives a much more satisfying experience, but has the added faff of unscrewing and topping up the tank rather than just chucking the

You can then go further and use tanks that have replaceable wicks & coils, can be stripped down & "serviced" etc. There's also a lot of variety and complexity available in the overall set-up e.g. variable voltage batteries. All these add to the hassle factor but allow the overall experience to be much better fine tuned to suit the vaper. Cost is a moot point here - you will save money using serviceable tanks, but people that get really into this can spend a fair bit on shiney new toys!

When it comes to the "juice" or liquid there's a hell of a lot of different things to consider - nicotine strength, flavour, the balance of "throat hit" vs vapour etc. But basically there are 3 ways to get the right juice which are buy ready made from a big importer (limited options), buy made to order from a smaller supplier (needs to steep for a few days), or buy the makings & mix your own (hassle, mess & steeping). These have been ordered from minimum hassle/maximum price to maximum hassle/minimum cost.

I'm a naturally lazy person and comparatively new to vaping, so I have a battery & disposable tank system, and am currently buying imported juice (Hangsen pineapple and Smartjuice Red tobacco flavour) which I know has steeped plenty while being shipped over and both brands have very good quality control. I will probably go directly to mostly mixing my own once I get a bit more money at the end of the month to buy all the bits & base liquids, though will probably continue buying the Smartjuice tobacco flavour because I like it so much! I doubt I will go down the road of serviceable tanks unless I get a nice glass one eventually."

Magimedi they say not- the chances of improving anything lessen after every operation, this last one has really set me back. I ride a motorbike which has been garaged 18months and I NEED to get back to it, but can't ride while I'm in this sort of pain and these sort of drugs.

I had cervical cancer two years ago and they think its exacerbated my back problem as they removed a lot of supporting structures during the surgery, it's quite a big op but im all clear now. I've basically been scanned head to toe and when my MRI was done on my chest I was terrified due to the smoking but it was clean as a whistle the surgeon said, that's when I started trying to stop. Allergic what is wrong with your back? X

Shonajay · 24/04/2014 08:08

Oh and we were in a pub yesterday and the manager said they had no policy on it yet, and we were free to vape. I did wait till the elderly couple opposite had finished wasting and left, as I felt a bit naughty!

Shonajay · 24/04/2014 08:12

Finished wasting? Eating!

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 24/04/2014 08:18

icanneverremember - most people find they spend longer vaping than they did smoking. This is because the nicotine intake is much gentler than from a cigarette - you don't get the big sudden 'hit' that you get from sparking up. You might find you do better on a refillable tank as it's generally more satisfying (and loads cheaper) than cartomisers.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 24/04/2014 08:29

Some links to research:

This is a systematic overview of all the research to date (there's quite a lot of it by now). It's free to access the full text but you need to make a sage account to view it.

This is a long but very readable article which is also pretty comprehensive.

It's right to be cautious and it's true we don't yet have longitudinal studies (they will only come when lots of us have been vaping for a very long time), however we do know what is in them and the ingredients have all been around for a long time and are well studied.

For example, we do know that propylene glycol is fine to inhale - it's the propellent used in asthma inhalers and fogging machines (the things that create the 'smoke' at rock concerts).

Most of all, it's worth remembering that you have stopped doing something that was more likely than not to kill you early.

the arcane dark art of re-coiling and re-wicking Grin

Shona, so sorry to hear you're in such pain with your back Flowers

That NHS choices page is badly out of date. The current threat does not come from the MHRA wanting to regulate them as medicines but from the EU wanting to regulate them as tobacco products.

The MHRA only ever wanted to regulate them, it was never a done deal, which is the impression you'd get reading that page. Wherever an authority has tried to regulate them as medicines they have failed in court.

Allergictoironing · 24/04/2014 08:40

Shona I broke my leg very badly over 30 years ago in a motorbike accident (car drove into the side of me on a roundabout). It left me with that leg about 3/4 of an inch shorter than the other, but nobody noticed! Of course I just adjusted how I walked automatically, it was a bad enough break so I thought the un-evenness was down to the general pain I had in it etc. Walking un-evenly for so long meant my pelvis constantly twists out of alignment to compensate. Now they have finally sorted me out with insoles but my pelvis & lower back (especially sacrum) object because they are so used to being out! Pretty sure I have quite bad arthritis now in that area, but at present no point in even scanning for it. It's bad enough so once round the supermarket kills me for a few hours after, not bad enough so it classes as disabled in any way.

I do understand about each operation being less effective than the previous one, if nothing else each op leave you with more scar tissue which causes problems itself. What was up with yours?

icanneverremember they reckon that 1 cart is about the equivalent of a pack of cigarettes - a lot of companies claim more but on average it's about that. Plenty is right in that you get much more satisfaction from a refillable tank set up which would likely reduce your rate of vaping, and you'd save a fortune. Plus you get a much better range of flavours, and no worry about getting the right carts to fit Grin

44 hours since my last fag - first night I sweated loads & seemed to dream more(or remember more), better last night I'm happy to say.

I'm going outside to vape with roughly the same frequency as I would smoke. Sometimes I think I overdose on nicotine because of the amount of inhalations/short space of time & trying to recreate the quicker hit of a fag. Blush Too early to tell how much liquid I'm using.

Anybody tried veg glycol based liquid to sort out the dry mouth thing? Does it work? Inside of lips seem to be shedding skin/peeling - not painful but a bit unsightly/annoying.

magimedi · 24/04/2014 09:18

Well done, Member.

Can't help you with the glycol - but Poltergoose (I think) had some probs with glycol & sorted it out. You might want to read back a few pages of this thread to find her post.

It's 19 months for me & I certainly agree that my dreams are much more 'vivid' & busy since I've given up the fags.

If anyone is like me and worrying about getting a more erm, suspicious looking vapouriser in to court (jury duty at high court), I am happy to confirm I got my skully MVP and big tank and case of spades and liquids in easily. :)

avoiretre · 24/04/2014 09:25

Can I ask if anyone has given up smoking but returned to vaping? The reason I ask is because I gave up smoking some years ago for fitness reasons, but have always missed nicotine. I'm tempted to try vaping as it appears to be nicotine without other nasties.

Shonajay · 24/04/2014 09:29

Mine was a prolapsed disc, picking up a child.the NHS wouldn't scan it, so it pressed on my sciatic nerve for over a year until we went private- luckily my husband had private health insurance with work and still does, but I didn't agree with using it!, so they scanned me, removed the disc and I was left with severe shin pain. Then they went in again as they'd left debris, then cervical cancer caused a double prolapse, and I'm still in pain. I also have a numb area down my leg. But I AM getting back on the bike. I've had three previous pelvic area operations to remove scar tissue. That's like me, out the other day, half an hour walk, shattered today but am going back to part time work soon as I love it so much (vets).

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 24/04/2014 09:29

And well done member! I got the sweats too and mad dreams. I don't seem to dream much anymore though...

I am burning liquid fast and I think that it is partly to do with the Iclear 30 as my 16b seems to keep liquid going for ages. It's crazy juice hungry.

Shonajay · 24/04/2014 09:31

Ok apparently I have shinyitis- I bought an innokin coolfire 2 yesterday. I know I need two batteries, but what kind of charger? It's very confusing on the myepack site. And I'm sorry for asking so many questions! X

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 24/04/2014 09:34

Shona Please tell me how you get on with it as I was torn between that and the MVP shine but thought the shine would be handier.

No idea about the charger though as I bought DP's mod and batteries and forgot a charger, going to buy one today.

magimedi · 24/04/2014 09:36

We are getting our own topic!!

Thanks Magi, will have a look & well done on persuading MNHQ to have a dedicated topic! Thanks

Shonajay · 24/04/2014 09:43

Margery I haven't got the shine version I got mvp2 which think is the same but not as pretty. Love it though. Battery life is incredible!

Depends on how much the batteries and charger cost for the coolfire will let you know x

magimedi · 24/04/2014 09:43

avoiretre - I think there was someone on one of the older threads who was also asking this question .

Far better to vape than go back on the cigs.

OP posts:
avoiretre · 24/04/2014 09:45

Thanks for the reply magimedi. Does the nicotine have exactly the same effect as it would from a cigarette do you find?

magimedi · 24/04/2014 09:49

Yes, Avoir. I was a dedicated 20 a day rullie smoker & I switched to vaping in a week with no problems at all & I can truly say I have never (in 19 months) wanted a cig.

I do wonder if you are missing the hand-to-mouth smoking action just as much as the nicotine?

If you really are going to go for vaping I'd go for 6ml strength of liquid (just about the lowest) & see how it goes.

OP posts:
avoiretre · 24/04/2014 09:51

Thanks again mag. No, I feel certain I miss nicotine itself. I assume you enjoy it too, or are you trying to wean yourself off the vaping?

magimedi · 24/04/2014 09:53

I do enjoy it - I have lowered my nicotine strength from 18 to 12 & tried 6 but it wasn't enough.

I suggest you get down to your local vape shop & have a chat with them about a starter kit - you may pay a few more £'s but worth it for the advice.

If you haven't got a shop there are loads of recs for starter kits on this thread.

Please let me know how you find it if you do decide to take up vaping.

OP posts:
avoiretre · 24/04/2014 09:56

I will try and find one. It does seem like a great way to enjoy nicotine without the by products in cigarettes. There was talk of nicotine water being introduced at one time, but it never seemed to happen!

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 24/04/2014 09:57

avoiretre, I suppose the thing to ask yourself is if you really want a nicotine habit again. I think in your position I wouldn't, but if I found myself at the fag counter about to buy some cigs I'd get a cig-alike ecig instead and then start looking for some decent kit.

Shona, after reading around quite a lot I went for a nitecore charger. Myepack do two on this page - I went for the big one as there are two of us using both size batteries for the vamo. If you have shinyitis it's a good investment as it fits batteries of lots of different sizes and different sorts of chemistry.
