This is now the fourth thread in six months - which must say something about vaping. Thread 3 & links back are here:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/1985116-AIBU-to-carry-on-evangalising-about-electronic-cigarettes-Part-3?pg=1

For all new vapers I will again copy Allergic's great summary of what all the terms mean - but don't hesitate to ask anything about vaping

We all started from scratch & know what how very confusing it can be.

No question is to daft to ask - it really can be a minefield but it is a route to no more cigarettes! (nearly 18 months in for me!)

Allergic's great summary:

""A very simple guide for those who have been a bit overwhelmed by all the variety discussed on this thread. Experienced vapers either ignore, or check for errors please!

There can be a trade off to be considered around cost, variety, overall experience and hassle.

The cigalike ones are the simplest to deal with in that you just unscrew one cart & screw in another. These tend to be the type that you can buy at the local market or shopping centre for a comparatively cheap initial purchase, but the carts they use can be very expensive and tend to be limited in flavours/strengths depending on brand. They can be useful in that they are small, look the most like "real" cigs, and are the most hassle-free, but the experience really isn't as good as other methods and the cost is higher.

The next step is to have a battery and disposable tank type system (CE4 in my case) where you buy the different liquids and fill the tank yourself. The batteries last a few months to a year (about the same or a little longer than the cigalikes) and the tanks (clearomisers) last anything from a couple of weeks to a couple of months - this can be extended by cleaning, but the coils inside do eventually pack in. This method is much cheaper and gives a much more satisfying experience, but has the added faff of unscrewing and topping up the tank rather than just chucking the

You can then go further and use tanks that have replaceable wicks & coils, can be stripped down & "serviced" etc. There's also a lot of variety and complexity available in the overall set-up e.g. variable voltage batteries. All these add to the hassle factor but allow the overall experience to be much better fine tuned to suit the vaper. Cost is a moot point here - you will save money using serviceable tanks, but people that get really into this can spend a fair bit on shiney new toys!

When it comes to the "juice" or liquid there's a hell of a lot of different things to consider - nicotine strength, flavour, the balance of "throat hit" vs vapour etc. But basically there are 3 ways to get the right juice which are buy ready made from a big importer (limited options), buy made to order from a smaller supplier (needs to steep for a few days), or buy the makings & mix your own (hassle, mess & steeping). These have been ordered from minimum hassle/maximum price to maximum hassle/minimum cost.

I'm a naturally lazy person and comparatively new to vaping, so I have a battery & disposable tank system, and am currently buying imported juice (Hangsen pineapple and Smartjuice Red tobacco flavour) which I know has steeped plenty while being shipped over and both brands have very good quality control. I will probably go directly to mostly mixing my own once I get a bit more money at the end of the month to buy all the bits & base liquids, though will probably continue buying the Smartjuice tobacco flavour because I like it so much! I doubt I will go down the road of serviceable tanks unless I get a nice glass one eventually."

I haven't had a fag since the end of August. I am on apple and cherry from Vape Escape and I love it. I love the way I no longer stink; my house no longer stinks; I don't have to clean the mirrors, windows and pictures every week but most of all..............I love all the spare cash I seem to have.

Husband has stopped smoking completely since he started vaping at Christmas. Was hoping to buy him a new vape kit for his birthday in April, any recommendations would be great.

He uses menthol flavoured liquid because it disguises the after taste.

Not sure this hadn't already been advised but liberty flights currently have weekly special offers in there own flavour mixes. There's a strawberry and kiwi mix this week for 2.50 for a 10ml bottle. I had the mixed berries last week which is quite nice.

I've not had a cigarette since December 2012; bought an e-cig to cut down and haven't touched a real cig since. I'm currently using a Kanger T3S tank on an eGo-CTwist VV battery and I'm using a mixture of 18mg and zero liquid (I mix it) in a variety of flavours depending on what I fancy! I've got a whole tin full of various tanks, batteries and liquid. Current fave flavour is Strawberry Daquiri but I also like Cherry Menthol, Red Bull and Cola flavours. I will never smoke a real cig again :)

MrsBryan do you have a vape shop anywhere near you? I am lucky in that 2 have opened up in a nearby city and the owners are great at giving advice. They also organise vape get togethers at a local pub so people can exchange experiences.

Well done, grwoing old - that's 6 months of not smoking!

MrsBryan - I am sure that the big viper vaping shoppers will be along any moment to point you in the right direction. If you have a local vape shop near you, go there &ask them - you'll get loads of advice & ideas.

There are a million recommendations for kits on the old threads, worth looking at, MrsBryan. It's in AIBU and they're called something about evangelising.....

My husband uses the tank system and I hate it. At least when he smoked he only did it outside and never in front of the children. Now he constantly smokes this thing everywhere and our youngest has started copying him.

Thanks magimedi Thanks. I was buying 60 fags every 2 days but only smoking half of each one so I was wasting money hand over fist. I tried giving up cold turkey but couldn't do it. Vaping is wonderful especially as I travel a lot and can use them in hotel rooms - just a puff or two and I am set for the day.

Flowers Jux - my link failed.

Kipper I think you should cut him a bit of slack - he is at so much less risk of so many horrible diseases now he has stopped smoking.

Place marking. Currently vaping Caroline brand (menthol tobacco flavour) trying to finish off my 24mg juice.

I washed out both the running-hot tanks and they are working better now.

Allergictoironing · 06/03/2014 22:48

Kippers he isn't actually smoking anything, as the term "smoking" refers to inhaling combustion products (smoke) & all the nasties & carcinogens in that. What he is doing is inhaling vapour, rather like if you put your head over a bowl of water with eucalyptus in it to clear a bunged up nose. Smoking is more like standing over a bonfire with loads of crap & rubbish being burned on it.

Hunting - Here's a link to a thread today in Chat:

The overall opinion seems to be that they are way better than smoking in pregnancy but better overall not to imbibe any nicotine when pregnant

Dwerf you know you can get 0% nicotine PG and/or VG from a few places? You can then dilute your 24mg juices with that & get down to 18ng or less as you were saying you wanted to....

I know he is not actually smoking anything but he has now been not actually smoking anything for over a year and as I said my 18 month old is now copying him and makes a grab for the vapouriser every chance he gets. DH previously managed to stop smoking for six years but with this he reckons he won't ever need to stop using it. He uses it far more often than he ever smoked and I wish he would go back to the nasal spray. At least it was only every half hour. Not every bloody two minutes!
