So we were talking about relationships at work and I said - I can't believe I've been with my partner for 5 years, that shit cray"

My colleague gave me this look Confused and said don't ever say that again and then laughed.

Aibu to think I can say what I want.

I know this is AIBU, but this thread makes for unpleasant reading :(

Bunbaker · 30/03/2014 17:21

I know I am being naive here, but what is so bad about "that shit cray"? What does it mean?

Serendipity30 · 30/03/2014 17:22

Which song? And he did not invent the phrase, i'll wait ....

Yes unpleasant reading that a woman over the age of 19 felt the need to use the phrase shit cray!

Serendipity30 · 30/03/2014 17:23

Al it means is 'that shit is crazy cray is slang for crazy. It is not a derogatory phrase just one that SOME teens use

TheXxed · 30/03/2014 17:24

N*ggas in Paris its on the watch the throne album.

Serendipity30 · 30/03/2014 17:25

So did he invent it or is that the only song you know

TheXxed · 30/03/2014 17:26

I hadn't heard the phrase being used until that album was released.

Bunbaker · 30/03/2014 17:26

"Al it means is 'that shit is crazy cray is slang for crazy. It is not a derogatory phrase just one that SOME teens use"

So why all the vitriol aimed at the OP? It just sounds childish, not rude.

rockybalboa · 30/03/2014 17:27

Wow, I thought that cray was a typo. I I can't imagine anyone saying "that shit cray" out loud without looking like a knob tbh.

Lj8893 · 30/03/2014 17:30

I had never heard of the phrase either until that song was released.

pippop1 · 30/03/2014 17:34

I've never heard that expression used either.

Sorry, but it just doesn't make you sound great.

Lj8893 · 30/03/2014 17:36

Apparently kayne west gained inspiration for the lyric "that shit cray" from the song Lose my mind by young jeezy.

MoominMammasHandbag · 30/03/2014 17:38

OP are you the Matthew Horne headmaster character from Bad Education?

You are aren't you?

CrimeaRiver · 30/03/2014 17:46

OP, please tell us you're Geordie. Lie if you have to. It would make my day.

Badvoc · 30/03/2014 18:11

Moomin! Yes! Ha! That's who it reminded me of :)
Yoyo...that's the one.
fancies a choccy biscuit now
I think I may just be too old for all this...

PeazlyPops · 30/03/2014 18:15

It doesn't mean crazy! Have you even heard the song?

A quick google will tell you what it mean zerofucksgiven.com/2011/11/02/the-real-meaning-of-that-shit-cray/

wobblyweebles · 30/03/2014 18:17

OP YANBU to think you can say what you want.

YABU to think your colleague cannot say what she wants though.

Seems a bit double standards to complain that she shouldn't be saying things.

OwlCapone · 30/03/2014 18:18

Can i just ask WHO has actually heard Kanye West say 'that shit cray' or are we assuming he speaks like this because he is a rapper, black or american?

So, now someone's pointed out which of his songs it was in, are you going to explain what point you were trying to make?

MostWicked · 30/03/2014 18:19

There are times, when I read posts like the OP's, that I think I must be living in a parallel universe!

Do you not see the irony in your post OP?
You are objecting to what your colleague said, with the words "Aibu to think I can say what I want". Surely if you can say what you want, she can say what she wants?

But I agree with her sentiment, you shouldn't say it because it makes you sound like a twonk.

KellyHopter · 30/03/2014 18:31

Peazlypops's link has really tickled me for some reason.
I think I'm a bit hysterical...

Lj8893 · 30/03/2014 18:33

owl I think the point hakuna was trying to make was that perhaps we were being racist, stereotypical, sexist etc etc.

Why she thought we would all use kayne west as an example when there are plenty other black American male rappers we could choose if that were really the case!

KellyHopter · 30/03/2014 18:33

Hysterical = a bit frenzied, not Hysterical = cray.
