So we were talking about relationships at work and I said - I can't believe I've been with my partner for 5 years, that shit cray"

My colleague gave me this look Confused and said don't ever say that again and then laughed.

Aibu to think I can say what I want.

i had to ask my dd what KK meant i am still not sure tbh Grin I dont understand the double K for ok

Nomama · 30/03/2014 13:43

I was saying KK slowly in a bored teen voice

kaaaaaaaaaay kaaaaaay

MoominsYonisAreScary · 30/03/2014 13:45

She probably thinks that anyone over the age of 15 should not be talking teenager, as do I

diddl · 30/03/2014 13:46

Shouldn't it as least be "that's shit cray"?

EverythingIsAwesome · 30/03/2014 13:47

I am cringing for you OP, how embarrassing!

mrsjay · 30/03/2014 13:48

*I was saying KK slowly in a bored teen voice

kaaaaaaaaaay kaaaaaay*

OH SO IT IS i get it now Grin

Primafacie · 30/03/2014 13:48

Picnic your post is the funniest I've read in months. Thank you, thank you. Thanks

SaveTheMonkeys · 30/03/2014 13:50

sorry, thought you meant to say 'that shit scary then i would have been Hmm

Oakmaiden · 30/03/2014 13:50

You can say what you want. So can she.

But don't think that you aren't judged because of what you say, and how you say it.

I'm trying to imagine the work dynamic now. I started off thinking you were all in an office, but I can't help feeling most team leaders/managers in an office environment would want to appear more intelligent than your misuse of language implies. So now I am trying to think what sort of work environment might have people in a position of responsibility who don't care if they sound a bit gauche...

FunkyBoldRibena · 30/03/2014 13:51

What's wrong with Rotherham?

Nothing. It's an Arctic monkey's reference about someone trying to be hip and cool.

hackmum · 30/03/2014 13:52

Never heard "shit cray" before. Every day's a school day on Mumsnet, isn't it? Or should that be, innit?

I have a teenage dd so thought I was down wiv da kids but it turns out I'm not. I think possibly the OP's colleague was trying to say, "Please don't embarrass yourself by using teenage slang, it only makes you look foolish." But I could be wrong.

TheXxed · 30/03/2014 13:55

YABU for several reasons. where are you based? I haven't heard the being used for at least 2 years.

phantomnamechanger · 30/03/2014 13:57

Oh hang on, this is not a reverse is it?
You were the colleague pulling someone up on speaking like this?

Nosleeptillbedtime · 30/03/2014 13:59

So how old are you op? I am really curious. I am sure we all want to know! Please be 50! That would be delightful!

XiCi · 30/03/2014 14:00

You actually said this out loud? At work? How fucking embarrassing

Blamenargles · 30/03/2014 14:00

I'm 26 and never heard anyone say that!

If someone superior to me said that I would probably tell them to never say that again, actually of anyone I knew said that I would tell them to never say that again

Minnieisthedevilmouse · 30/03/2014 14:01

May I ask please what your background is? I'm wondering if that might make more sense of your sentence. Your name is sweeterthanhoney which I'm (massive assumptions here admittedly) taking to infer black culture origin? Many people I know of black origin use language in ways that I as white 37 just sound stupid doing. Or worse. I wish I could copy it, Latino and Asian type pop references too. I just look like Miley Cyrus in her future near forties still twerking. Sad and rather ridiculous iykwim. I have tried. Totes amazeballs is the kind of reference I throw in instead. American but as Guiliana Rancic is near my age (Italian American) it doesn't feel so silly. Tbh I'm well jel if you are white and pull it off. Never had that art myself.

GarlicMarchHare · 30/03/2014 14:01

Are you from Rotherham?

I haven't that being used for at least 2 years.

Aha! I see the connection Grin

Nothing worse than using out-of-date kewl lingo, incorrectly. Cringing for you now, OP!

Custardo · 30/03/2014 14:03

bitches be crazy

GarlicMarchHare · 30/03/2014 14:04

Do you work at Argos?
Grin

to think my colleague should not have told not to say this??
HarderThanYouThink · 30/03/2014 14:05

That shit cray is from a Kanye West / Jay Z song.

If somebody at work said that to me i would have reacted the exact same way as your colleague did.

Gomez · 30/03/2014 14:08

I would have taken it as a bit good-humoured banter to be honest. The same way my teenager looks at me and suggest that I don't wear/say something every again as it is tragic. Generally because I am ancient and v. uncool.

In fact the word cool results in that statement from her every time I say it. Same as wearing Vans/Converse/Puma. Or buying decent music. It is just wrong as far as she is concerned. I very much enjoy winding her up. Smile

ADishBestEatenCold · 30/03/2014 14:23

Love this thread! It's really brightening up my 'totally-on-my-own-Mother's-Day'!!!

Hurry back, OP, and tell us some more strange things you've said!

waltermittymissus · 30/03/2014 14:29

It sounds like banter!

If someone I was chatting with said "that shit cray" I would laughingly tell them to stop because, really? That shit cray?

That's pretty cringey!

spongebob13 · 30/03/2014 14:34

oh sweet jesus. never understood shortening words especially by one letter ... do you also say "totes amazeballs", "yolo" and "totes awk". if so you should be shot with a ball of your own shite!

quit watching the kardashians.
