About Ds Teacher wanting to call him something else ?

CrazyHhas5kitties · 28/03/2014 16:49

So Ds 5 has come home from school a little bit upset & after asking bribing him to tell me what's wrong I'm unsure how to deal/react to it .

Right so for the sake of keeping my anonimity (sp) I have changed the names .

So Ds is called Tom & has a class mate called Thomas from what I can gather Thomas' mum has told their Teacher that Thomas must now be called Tom so the Teacher has told Ds that he must be called Thomas so everybody doesn't get confused Hmm

Ds said 'but that's not my name' but apparently that's how it has to be Hmm because everybody can't be confused by two children with the same name , even though Tom is what's on my Ds birth certificate not Thomas

So if I haven't lost/confused you all what should I do about this ?

I will be seeing the Teacher Monday so I will say something I'm just unsure of what to say

Just go in and say his name is Tom. He can be Tom J. That's what normally happens isn't it?

Lottiedoubtie · 28/03/2014 16:51

'Just to clarify as DS seems a little confused! His name is Tom and that is what I expect everyone to call him at school'

Brucietheshark · 28/03/2014 16:52

I would say - that's not his name, so I would appreciate it if you would call him by his name please. Brandish birth cert if really necessary, but tbh it shouldn't be. They'll just have to be 'Tom R' and 'Tom J' or whatever. Teacher sounds a bit daft.

IDontDoIroning · 28/03/2014 16:52

Nonsense. Your ds name on his birth cert in Tom. He is called tom not anything else.
The other mother dies not have the only claim to this name for her child.
Can't they be T

YoungBodyOldHead · 28/03/2014 16:52

Yes i would certainly say something!

A child should be address as what the parents and child would like him to be addressed as.

This would get my back up tbh

Whathaveiforgottentoday · 28/03/2014 16:53

silly teacher - just go in and say he's not a thomas he's a Tom. Please use that name. Its not that confusing.

PuppyMonkey · 28/03/2014 16:53

Tell teacher your DS isn't Thomas he's Tom. Thank you and good night. Grin

Ploppy16 · 28/03/2014 16:54

I had this exact problem with DS! His offical name is a short version and his classmate had the long version. I bypassed the teacher first and went to the other parent to explain. It got.sorted fairly quickly and the boys ended up being TomPloppy and TomXXX (using your examples). For years I got Christmas cards signed by Tomploppy because he got so used to writing it!

guineapig2014 · 28/03/2014 16:54

Yes, just go in on mon and tell the teacher that your ds is called tom so can be referred to as tom x or whatever your surname begins with. Hope this helps!

SirChenjin · 28/03/2014 16:54

No, I understood - just! Grin

We had the same problem in nursery - one of the assistants couldn't cope with there being 2 children having the same name. I stuck to my guns - was very nice about it, but explained that he was Thomas and not Tom (I know, what a coincidence!!) and if that caused too much of a problem for her she was welcome to distinguish him using the first initial of our surname, so Thomas C. You're quite within your rights to tell them to use the name you gave him.

IDontDoIroning · 28/03/2014 16:55

Oops sorry
Tom crazy and tom notcrazy or what ever.
Are they saying they don't have situations where more than one child have the same first name in the entire school.

CrazyHhas5kitties · 28/03/2014 16:55

Oh good for a minute I actually thought I was being unreasonable

Are you sure the teacher has said this or was it the other little boy. I'd be suprised if it was the teacher. If it definitely was the teacher, a straight forward 'His name is Tom' should be sufficient.

EEatingSoupForLunch · 28/03/2014 16:56

That's ridiculous. I had a very popular name at school, there were four of us with the same name in my class and all preferred the same shortened version. So teachers and everyone else added the initial of the surname. It's What You Do.

Floralnomad · 28/03/2014 16:56

Are some teachers really that stupid !

IamMummyhearmeROAR · 28/03/2014 16:58

Find out if that was actually what was said. As a teacher I have had parents come in to me about things I have allegedly said to their child when in reality I've said nothing of the sort.

RufusTheReindeer · 28/03/2014 16:58

My son had the same name as another child in his class, the name cannot be shortened

And annoyingly (for my name label ordering) their last name began with the same letter as well

RufusTheReindeer · 28/03/2014 16:59

Sorry!

Its a tiny school (100 pupils) so this is the only 2 with the same name iyswim

I'm not sure I'll speak to the other parent as she is very erm in your face and very pally with this Teacher .
she has always made a point of shouting Tom whenever I start to call over my Ds Hmm

I bet DS is confused over the issue...he's only 5 and may have jumped to conclusions.

Felyne · 28/03/2014 17:00

"Right then, Mrs Teachername, our neighbours are also called Mr and Mrs Teachername so to avoid confusion we will be calling you Mrs Twatt"

Skiingmaniac · 28/03/2014 17:00

Odd....in my class there are duplicate names - 3 with one name that could shortened in a variety of ways but because neither the parent nor child has asked to be called anything different I call them by their given name combined with either initial or full surname Smile

dayshiftdoris · 28/03/2014 17:01

My son has a popular name and is xxx plus surname initial if there is more than one of them with the name.

He did the signing of his name in cards with his last initial too Smile
