About Ds Teacher wanting to call him something else ?

So Ds 5 has come home from school a little bit upset & after asking bribing him to tell me what's wrong I'm unsure how to deal/react to it .

Right so for the sake of keeping my anonimity (sp) I have changed the names .

So Ds is called Tom & has a class mate called Thomas from what I can gather Thomas' mum has told their Teacher that Thomas must now be called Tom so the Teacher has told Ds that he must be called Thomas so everybody doesn't get confused Hmm

Ds said 'but that's not my name' but apparently that's how it has to be Hmm because everybody can't be confused by two children with the same name , even though Tom is what's on my Ds birth certificate not Thomas

So if I haven't lost/confused you all what should I do about this ?

I will be seeing the Teacher Monday so I will say something I'm just unsure of what to say

They should sort it fairly fast. Not quite the same but my DD has a long name which can be shortened to a very common short name, which can be short for lots of different long names (A bit like Katie being short for Caitlyn, Katherine, Catherine, or Beth being short for Bethany, Elizabeth, etc.).

The short name can be spelled with an 'ie' or a 'y'. When DD started school, despite all her forms saying '....ie', everything was labelled '....y'. Her books, her peg, her tray - the lot.

I said 'as DD is going to be learning to spell her name (she has SN), could it be changed to match the name we use?' It was done that day.

I knew two boys who had the same name at school. It was like David Terry. So one was called David and the other, Terry.

id tell him to 'get tee fuck' with that. Grin jeez.

FayeKorgasm · 29/03/2014 00:40

This is an appalling situation and should not be allowed to continue.

A name is part of one's identity and should be in the control of the individual. To have an authority figure arbitrarily change it without discussion is damaging to the individual. When done to a child it is indefensible.

Your poor son. What sort of message is he getting from this? I would be furious in your position.

MusicalEndorphins · 29/03/2014 01:18

What a weird and rather thoughtless teacher!
My name was very popular when I was born, there were always at least 3 of us in each class. "Suzanne A, Suzanne H ect" (not my name). I would go in, or or phone her, and tell she is not changing your sons name.
Some people make me wonder!

No one should change their name. I am a Heather b. 1970, when Heather was popular. I was Heather E at school. It was funny in second and third grade when there were three girls in the class, and two of us were named Heather. It was a boys' school that had just gone coed.

LibraryMum8 · 29/03/2014 04:30

YANBU. Have the teacher call them by their true names, if Thomas is to be called Tom, and your Ds wants be called Tom, have teacher use first initial: Tom X and Tom Y. easy!

LibraryMum8 · 29/03/2014 04:34

Sorry should have been first letter of last name added to first name. For instance we had a Jack J. and a Jack B. in ds' class. Very easy.

MrsWombat · 29/03/2014 07:39

In the class i read with there is a boy and girl (so no confusion there!) with the same name but spelt differently, and they still differentiate the name. They are on the class list as Kay B and Kaye D. (Name changed)

CrazyHhas5kitties · 29/03/2014 07:49

Fuck Its exactly as you say.

For instance I'll call my Ds over & then she will suddenly appear at the side of me & shout her Ds twice as loud & trying to sound posh She even wears crocks

I was at 2ndry school with a few Julies & they were always Julie Surname.

Bearing in mind that we all sat at desks in rows with the teacher at the front iyswim.

I'm sure it's no longer like that, certainly in primary school & there are surely mainy instances where it would be obvious which Tom is meant, without haviing to differentiate, unless they always sit next to each other.

Shamoy · 29/03/2014 08:47

Wow, really odd. I wonder what the explanation will be on Monday!

RandomPants · 29/03/2014 08:54

You should go in and insist the teacher calls your child "the best child in the whole world" as you have decided that is his name. He will not be answering to anything else.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 29/03/2014 10:03

Youngest DB has always been known by his second name. From birth.

He gets to reception and is addressed by his first name, which he has never heard. There is a bit of a kerfuffle. He runs out of school sobbing. DM pitches up and the teacher runs out of school sobbing. DM makes us chips and lemon meringue pie for tea, in celebtation of victorious slaughter.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 29/03/2014 10:06

Bollocks. Celebration.

ilovepowerhoop · 29/03/2014 10:10

dd had 2 Emilys in her class so one is Emily T and one is Emily M.

GrumpyRedhead · 29/03/2014 10:15

I'd like to know how this teacher would have coped back in the 80s when virtually every girl was Louise or Laura! :)

ilovepowerhoop · 29/03/2014 10:19

I had 3 Fiona's in my class at school in the 80's - didnt know any Louises or Lauras (I was in Scotland)

givemeaclue · 29/03/2014 10:21

I wouldn't be too hard on the teacher you don't actually know what has been said. Just say your son seems to think there is a name issue please could she clarify.

The other mum is committing a fashion felony by wearing crocs.
