To think my friends drink too much?

Firstly, I'd like to establish that I know it's none of my business, but a couple we are good friends with are drinking more and more every time we socialise with them and their 18 year old DS has been drinking illegally in pubs for about 3 years with fake ID and already has a huge beer gut.

Maybe I'm in the wrong but do you think this sounds like excessive alcohol consumption?

Met up at 12 noon for early lunch. Both of them drank 2 bottles of wine each with lunch. We then went to the pub (3pm by now) and by 7pm they had a further 8 pints of lager each. Me and DH were floored by this time (hadn't drunk nearly as much but were comparative lightweights). We got a cab home and I texted the following day to thank them for a good day out and asked how much longer they had stayed. She replied "Oh, we were there till midnight, I'm more lager than woman now ha ha".

Neither of them ever seem to suffer from hangovers or any obvious ill effects (although both are putting on a LOT of weight).

They are self employed and go out to the pub almost every night of the week.

They are good company and we only see them about once a month but every time they seem to be drinking more than ever.

Just wondered what others thought?

Blimey. That's a shed load of alcohol.

Pre dc I could put away a fair bit on a night out. But by a fair bit I mean a bottle and a half of wine and a couple of spirits over dinner. Your friends' consumption is off the scale.

Nowt you can do about it though.

Way too much, but I doubt they care, and I doubt there's much you can do about it unfortunately.

I think it's very excessive, well above the recommended limits and quite worrying that they don't get hangovers.

Also - how the hell do they afford it?? That's probably about £120 worth of alcohol in one night alone.

But it really is not your business so best to perhaps meet them in a non pub situation if it bothers you.

Really ?? I know a fair amount of people who can drink a considerable amount, but 2 bottles of wine then at least 8 pints....?? Sounds a little like William Hague's claim to have drunk 16 pints a day as a lad... Ie unbelievable

No way, I used to drink an awful lot, but even I'd have been floored after 2 bottles of wine and have a terrible hangover the next day.

How often do they drink?

It must cost a fortune to do it in pubs.

Thanks for responses. I don't understand how they afford it, although their business does seem to be quite successful. They employee 5 full time staff and they all have a company vehicle.

I know there's nothing I can do about it and maybe that day they drank more than normal but it was the fact it seemed to barely register. If I had drunk that much I'd be unconscious!

Also, their job involves driving around different sites so I can't imagine they would pass a breathalyser test the next day.

God yes they drink way too much.

There's nothing you can say or do about it though as I'm sure they already know it.

I think as long as they aren't doing anyone any harm, ie being violent or abusive, and they know the effect it can have on their bodies.. leave them to it.

No, it's not a joke. I've known the woman since I was 17 and she always had a much bigger capacity for alcohol than me and didn't get sick or feel particularly hungover the next day.

She went on a health kick in her 20s and lost a lot of weight and got fit through marathon running but gradually she's gone back to her old ways.

The day we were out she had 2 bottles of wine followed by 8 pints of lager and probably another 5 pints of lager after we left judging by her comment and when she left the pub.

Yes they are.

And what many people do overlook (as someone upthread said) is that people who are routinely drinking too much are often routinely drink-driving

13 pints and two bottles of wine is about 48 units (more if it was stronger lager). In less than 12 hours they drank 48 units each - really?

I drink a fair bit but even I think this is a lot! I never drink before my DC's bedtime anyway, as I just can't. One pint or a couple of glasses of wine at lunchtime and I would be a mess.

I'm just agog at the cost!

I hadn't drunk in a pub for ages, but bought a voddy tonic for a mate and myself at a funeral the other week it was six pounds! Ow!
