To be depressed at what I would apparently like for Mother's Day

Shopping in Sainsburys I came across the Mother's Day gift display. Because I have squeezed some kids out of my chuff I now desire nothing more than something pointless and pastel, preferably decorated with pictures of cupcakes. Or an emetic film, a Love Songs CD, or chocolates in the shape of a shoe. How depressing to see a whole aisle of this shit and think that this is what marketing types have identified as What Women Want. I suppose come Father's Day the same aisle will be full of amusing golf mugs and ties with cars on. It's just so fucking dull.

I went looking for a card for my mum in Tesco today. It is not easy finding a card for someone who doesn't want a big fuss made, and who doesn't like pink.

There isn't a Mothers' Day card that says 'Happy Mothers' Day to someone who is bloody difficult to buy a card for'.

Hallmark should take note - there's a gap in the market.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 22/03/2014 23:41

How about one that says "Happy Mother's Day - can I stop pretending to be grateful?".

BlueJean · 22/03/2014 23:42

I remember years ago hearing someone at work asking the resident card maker to create a Mothers day card for their MIL.

No problem with design -just that it should NOT have the word Love anywhere on it.

The card maker said she was often asked for non emotional cards.

MyNameIsKenAdams · 22/03/2014 23:44

Oh god its all just a load of flumpf isnt it.

I have found a great card shop called Scribbler which actually does decent and sometimes hilarious cards. The one we will send to MIL says "Thanks for putting up with all of our shit" on it and for DMum, "You look as good now as the day I met you" with a lovely post birth dishevelled woman holding a screaming newborn.

Toospotty · 22/03/2014 23:44

My mother has been dead for 20 years and I've ignored the event for a long time, so it's only since I joined the ranks of Mother that I've noticed how awful it is.

Last year I got my mum a card saying "I love you, but if Zombies were chasing us I'd trip you"

she loved it Grin

MyNameIsKenAdams · 22/03/2014 23:45

Hahaha Nursey im scouting that one out for mext year!

EeeIcouldCrushAGrape · 22/03/2014 23:45

Some women DO want that. Just because you don't, doesn't mean everyone else has to shun it just because they're a woman and therefore should shun anything remotely girly.

Toospotty · 22/03/2014 23:46

Fine, Eeee, but where's the stuff for ME? Some women are girly, some aren't, so where is our stuff?

NurseyWursey · 22/03/2014 23:46

myname Ebay is your friend! I always get 'odd' cards from there Grin

YouTheCat · 22/03/2014 23:47

I don't have a mother any more. But I have looked at the display in Sainsbury's and it is pitiful, especially the dvd selection. Where is Kickass? Where is Alien? Why is it supposed that just because I'm a mother I want to watch fluffy, badly acted crap?

My mum would have much preferred some sci-fi tbh.

nickelbabe · 22/03/2014 23:48

the thing that annoys me most about it is that it's called Mothering Sunday.
mother's day exists in america (and other places) and takes paet in May.
Mothering Sunday is based in the Christian church and is the 4th Sunday in lent.

the commercialisation of the date doesn't annoy me as myluch as it is nigh on.impossible to get a card that says Mothering Sunday, and the only ones that do are obviously aimed at 83year old mums. Hmm

nickelbabe · 22/03/2014 23:48

*part
*much

NurseyWursey · 22/03/2014 23:48

Where is Kickass? Where is Alien?

Exactly! Where is my Walking Dead memorabilia, or a Sherlock Holmes related item?

But to be honest a lot of mums do love the cliche stuff.

StrawberryTartYum · 22/03/2014 23:49

That awful 'Diana' film is being advertised as the perfect mothers day gift, can just imagine DMs face if I gave her that! DP bought me a nice going out dress as an early mothers day gift for my first night out since PFB came along and my first ever mothers day :) He had been warned about getting me a teatowel or mug!

AwfulMaureen · 22/03/2014 23:51

I'm getting my Mum an M&S voucher...she loves the place! I will add some flowers and she'll be a happy bunny. I would like a fuckgantic box of chocolate and a new dressing gown please!

Toospotty · 22/03/2014 23:51

I'd like some new drinking glasses if I'm getting any sort of present as the toddler broke the last of my nice ones during a tantrum last week. Couldn't they have some classy plain stuff alongside the pink fluff?

NurseyWursey · 22/03/2014 23:54

Last year I got an aromatherapy kit and a Harley Quinn (Batman character) action figure. My DP is awesome.

AwfulMaureen · 22/03/2014 23:55

Boots have obviously got it right...forget the frou frou boxes of shite body lotion in the shape of shoes...or the boxes of mugs with SPECIAL MUM on them...cut right to the chase with sex accessories!

Inertia · 22/03/2014 23:56

In an effort to avoid similar (and in a move which is utterly ungracious and in defiance of the tradition of appearing awestruck and grateful for pink stuff your kids chose), I have indicated to DH that slippers and gin make ideal gifts.

ScrambledSmegs · 22/03/2014 23:56

I was going to come on here and say that^ but nickelbabe beat me to it.

It didn't even originate as anything to do with human mothers. People went to their mother church on this date, which was the main church or cathedral in their area.

But since it's now been hijacked by the hallmark brigade, I would like some toast brought to me in bed. Because I didn't get a bloody thing last year and how much effort is it to make toast and help your small child carry it upstairs so she feels special for making mummy a treat? Eh? EH?

Toospotty · 22/03/2014 23:56

Nice one, Boots. One in the eye for the Daily Mail too.

AwfulMaureen · 22/03/2014 23:57

Toot if my DH got me some lube for mother's day I'm afraid he'd be getting one in the eye too!

CinderellaRockefeller · 22/03/2014 23:58

DD thinks I'd like the disney princess splash palace for Mother's Day. A cup with cupcakes on it sound more appealing frankly!

Toospotty · 22/03/2014 23:58

If mine bought me lube I'd be filing under 'hopeful but unlikely' but at least it's something I might one day find useful.
