To be depressed at what I would apparently like for Mother's Day

Shopping in Sainsburys I came across the Mother's Day gift display. Because I have squeezed some kids out of my chuff I now desire nothing more than something pointless and pastel, preferably decorated with pictures of cupcakes. Or an emetic film, a Love Songs CD, or chocolates in the shape of a shoe. How depressing to see a whole aisle of this shit and think that this is what marketing types have identified as What Women Want. I suppose come Father's Day the same aisle will be full of amusing golf mugs and ties with cars on. It's just so fucking dull.

It's Mother's Day to most people- i. e. the vast majority of people in this country who do not go to church.

Yes, it is commercialised but the basic premise to me has always been taking time to appreciate your mum, which obviously you should do at other times of the year as well, but it does make you stop and think.

nickelbabe · 27/03/2014 18:03

it doesn't

nickelbabe · 27/03/2014 18:04

it doesn't matter

nickelbabe · 27/03/2014 18:06

it doesn't matter what you think it is to most people - its official name is Mothering Sunday.

which is actually preferable for most people who don't have a fucking clue where to put the apostrophe

nickelbabe · 27/03/2014 18:09

and I'll add to that that most of you also celebrate christmas

Pagwatch · 27/03/2014 18:10

Every year my dh asks DS2 (with SN) what he wants to get for mummy.

Every year he thinks hard and say '.....a bucket'

Every year. For about 12 years. And none of us have any idea why

Rule in our house; only flowers for Mother's Day. It's traditional x

NearTheWindymill · 27/03/2014 19:50

Um - I gave DH the £5 Boots voucher off perfume and wrote on a post-it what DD needed to put it towards. He's off to see his mum this weekend. Only time will tell Grin

BoJolly · 27/03/2014 20:06

At least a bucket is useful Grin

Fefifo · 27/03/2014 21:05

Perhaps he meant a bucket of KFC which is exactly what my DH got me one Mothers Day Smile

scarffiend · 27/03/2014 21:17

I've only read a few posts bit I would be genuinely gutted if DD(H) presented me with bubble bath or any other bath addition - that shit gives me thrush every time. He should know that!

Likewise, if DH is in charge of present buying, it would be a bit sad if you were presented with the total antithesis of what you would actually like.

When DD buys, I'm sure I'd be thrilled with anything. But she's so little anything she produces would delight me!

scarffiend · 27/03/2014 21:18

Apart from poo, she produces that fairly regularly.
