AIBU?

AIBU to expect a 'please' from a cashier when they ask me 4 money?

I was in Marks and Spencers yesterday I had some rude cashier asking me to move my basket off the conveyer belt without even saying please.I thought I would let it go even though I was niggled by her barking an order at me and being so rude.I moved the basket and said nothing. When it came to paying the woman she asked for the money without saying 'Please'.I was so fed up with her by now that I pulled her up on it and tore a strip off of her.She subsequently apologised and I thought that would be the last of it.
I went back in this evening and went to another cashier and low and behold the same thing happened there when she asked for the money. There was no 'Please' I thought (ffs) what's going on here? I asked her whether it was Marks and Spencers policy to be so impolite when asking for the money when buying goods? She said no but she was not obliged to say 'please'.

I thought ok then if you want to argue the point lets get a manger involved.Along came a manager and he said to me that he didn't know what all the fuss was about and that the cashiers had done nothing wrong by not saying 'Please' when asking for the money and he said he would not be reprimanding them on it.He told me that by the cashier saying 'thank you' and 'have a nice day' was surfice and please was not needed.

I mean to say what is this world coming to? I was brought up to say 'please' and 'thank you' and i'm not going to stop now and i expect people to say please and thank you to me especially if I am a customer at Marks and Spencers being served by a cashier.

I will be making an official complaint tomorrow to the store manager and head office. Your views please.TYIA

The ones who don't think "please" is necessary probably think it's fine to go up to a bar and say "Can I get..." with no please or thank you.

I am willing to bet that you actually brightened up their day you know OP. I bet they all had a good laugh about the nutter who came in thinking she was the queen of sheba.

I bet the customer service folk at tesco/sainsbury couldn't wait to get off the phone and tell their friends all about you either.

Is your name Hyacinth by any chance?

OP firstly you are a massive pita and a total arse to behave the way you did.

Secondly, why on earth should she say please? She's not asking you for a favour, or for you to do something for her. You want to buy something. She will facilitate that. YOU should say please and thank you.

It's not her shop, you aren't paying her, you are paying the shop.

Jesus.

Ffs op

Of course COMPETITORS will agree that the cashier at M&S was wrong.

Or more likely, as soon as they realised it wasn't a complaint against them, they switched off and weren't listening to you at all, just humouring you.

I have to agree that please is a basic expectation isnt it?

It riles me when I dont get pleases or thank yous, I always make a point of saying please if I need a carrier say, or thank you when I have had my change, leaving etc.

I now say "please!!" if they just bark the amount at me. I wouldnt make an official complaint, or a massive fuss so for that I think YABU. But YANBU to expect a basic level of manners.

When you leave your basket on the conveyor belt it causes an obstruction. Where is she meant to put the basket she has a tiny space to work in.

This thread will deleted soon on the basis you are a goady little troll but just in case you've missed the point everyone else is making- you are a sad fool who the many supermarkets you've rung and the poor cashier in m&s, must just laugh at.

Old fashion is the last thing you are coming across. Rude, pita, entitled yes that sounds more like it.

I don't like the sound of you 'tearing a strip' off someone in their place of work, potentially infront of other customers? It's a little excessive, however this is one of my pet hates. Normally I just hand the money over and say "you're welcome" as I do it, to make a point.
I've worked in retail, it's shit sometimes, but smiling and being polite was 9/10 reciprocated by customers and made my job more pleasant.

I've never heard the horrible "Can I get..." with a please or thank you.

Much nicer to say "I'd like X please", or "May I have X, please".

How hard is it to use the word "please", really? Confused

This thread is hilarious, its really made me chuckleGrin

Just thinking about the OP sat at home in an indignant rage ringing around supermarkets to see if their cashiers say please.

Reading a thread about manners from someone who thinks its ok to say please and thank you but can't extend being polite to people who disagree with them.

OP if you get your kicks from belittling checkout staff i think that says alot about you.

Y'see, you just wouldn't get that in Aldi.

YABP(petty)

But 10/10 for a great wind-up thread
