I used to sport the landing strip up until I was about 6 months pregnant with ds who is now 2. I stopped shaving as I couldn't see what I was doing, also might sound daft but kind of wanted it to be the way nature intended to give birth.
Since then I haven't shaved, waxed, trimmed etc. I'm not massively hairy so it's not a full on 80s style bush.
DP moaned the other day as he liked it the way I used to have it. Hmm. I sort of told him tough luck it's my bits and quite frankly I cba and like not having itchy stubble. He watched our Baby come out of there fgs surely he realises it's not a fashion accessory?
AIBU to not make the effort for dp?

I trim regularly. Feels too bushy and sweaty otherwise.

Doesn't shaving/waxing etc leave you with a lot of ingrown hairs, red marks, bumps and itchy-ness?

thecook · 20/01/2014 22:49

43

thecook · 20/01/2014 22:56

I am 43 and have shaved for twenty odd years. I experimented by trimming at first, then I took a bit more off and then I took the lot off. I do it every day in the bath. Takes a minute.

I had a fling with an old school flame recently and he wanted me to grow it back and then keep it in a 'neat triangle' No way. I refused.

In my gym in West London I cannot remember when I last saw someone with natural pubic hair in the communal showers. . The odd landing strip but no full bushes. I would never grow it back.

ladypete · 21/01/2014 15:03

mamofsteel thants

I would just feel messy and unkept. I much prefer it not natural.

And we just discuss good and bad salons/booking waxes etc so it's kind of a given that we all get waxed!

ladypete · 21/01/2014 15:03

thecook we might go to the same gym Grin

grovel · 21/01/2014 15:12

Untrimmed looks like an unsponsored roundabout.

IceBeing · 21/01/2014 15:53

you know that your body grows hair in places where it helps?

Somewhere out there is the bastard that first thought 'oh - if we tell them that their hair is smelly and messy then they will pay us to remove it'

And his bastard mate who said 'yes and then when they get itchy and smelly because their natural bacterial defence has been removed we can make even more money selling them cream and deodorant'

bastards.

fatlazymummy · 21/01/2014 16:03

I shave mine - not all of it but enough so nothing shows when I'm swimming, which is an all year round activity for me. I prefer it that way anyway.I also shave my legs and underarms.I'm not a big fan of body hair - on men or women.
And I don't have a partner (or want one) so it's nothing to do with sex.

Theodorous · 21/01/2014 16:03

all lasered and some of you people are bloody obsessed with my choice and if you called my husband a paedo to his face I would respect you more. I don't think he really cares but I do enjoy not having the bloody clots stuck to the hairs every month.

BradleyCoopersCurlyPerm · 21/01/2014 19:54

Hmmm I really doubt that I need hair around my arsehole at all to be honest.

And I like to feel smooth when I touch myself.

And it is cleaner for me as I'm a sweaty betty and the sweat would otherwise accumulate amongst the hair.

I do smell clean, wash regularly and all that thanks!

Nobody ever suggested to me that I remove all my pubic hair, I decided all by myself. It made logical sense to me because I was shaving my pits and my legs already. I prefer it. Most men I know of myown age prefer it. A lot of my male friends defuzz. The guy I'm seeing always does before we see each other because nobody wants a mouth full of hair, surely!!!

kitchensinkmum · 21/01/2014 20:48

Sadly , most young girls think they have to "trim and edge "
It's often a topic of conversation at my daughters school (all girls school) and the poor dears who go natural seems to talked about the most. It's such a shame ! One girl was held down by her friends while they waxed her bikini line !
If you want to go natural or totally no hair at all it shouldn't matter, or anything in between . I'm certain we dont
need pubes but some people are quite attached to theirs
I was totally oblivious to the whole world of merkins until my 15 year old educated me. You can de hair your fanny and buy a beautiful stick on wig to decorate it if you wish. All colours . The origins of these are slightly unattractive , coming from Victorian times.

Weelady77 · 21/01/2014 20:51

The girl was held down by her friends!!! Did she consent and they were holding her cause it was sore or they pulled her trousers and pants down and waxed her without consent if it was the latter I'd be more concerned about that than removing hair!!!

Backinthering · 21/01/2014 20:59

I still don't understand how having pubes can be a "no-no" in one's social circle. I wouldn't have the first clue what my friends fannies look like.

Sallyingforth · 21/01/2014 21:07

One girl was held down by her friends while they waxed her bikini line
Sound very unlikely to me.

MostWicked · 21/01/2014 21:12

Many places out there, women decided all of their own accord (because women a free thinking individuals with a brain), that they didn't like this hair sprouting from underwear and swimming costumes, and didn't like it getting stuck to sanitary towels, so they trimmed, shaved and waxed, and it felt so good and it felt so clean, that they did it again and again and again.
They noticed that if they were not careful, there would sometimes be irritation, but they learnt how to manage that so no fancy products were ever needed.
And who seriously puts cream and deodorant on their muff?

Joysmum · 21/01/2014 21:20

Remind me to stop shaving my armpits and my legs too. Silly me, I've been oppressed and clearly lack the intelligence to be able to make a choice about what suits me. I never realised my choices made me such a victim!

For those asking about how to limit razor burn, hope this helps you:

  1. sharp razor. When it starts blunting get rid by swapping it into your partners razor

  2. go with, not against, the direction of hair growth

  3. try to only make one sweep over each area

  4. some use baby oil after but I don't

  5. shave every other day at most

  6. on the days you don't shave, exfoliate as this helps prevent ingrowing hairs.

MostWicked · 21/01/2014 22:20

I have a slightly different technique Joysmum.

Forget shaving gel. I started with baby oil, now I use silicone lube.
This allows me to get a REALLY close shave with no razor burn. I use a fresh blade every 3 shaves. I do shave against the growth, but only after my skin got used to it. Absolutely no itching or red bumps afterwards.
I usually only shave a couple of time a month. I like to give my skin a rest between.

MostWicked · 21/01/2014 22:22

Oh and do it after a soak in the bath for best results. I sit on the site after my soak.

confuddledDOTcom · 22/01/2014 00:27

Those of you who change your blade after not many uses, what do you use? I'm assuming not the blades that cost £10 for 3?

babyhinder · 22/01/2014 00:32

I shave because I hate it when I don't but I also have eczema and it irritates it if I don't shave.

rabbitlady · 22/01/2014 00:43

56 and never done anything in the way of improving on nature's provision.
find the idea fairly repulsive but people are so keen on how they look nowadays, so much in the gym and stripping off in front of each other - and there's such easy access to porn - i can see why it might be considered just another feature to embellish.

rabbitlady · 22/01/2014 00:44

joysmum, you have time in your life to tart up your parts every day?

SayMyNameSayIt · 22/01/2014 00:59

BradleyCooper

I wish there was a like button for your posts on this thread!!!

BradleyCoopersCurlyPerm · 22/01/2014 04:26

I use a man's razor, Wilkinson sword something or other, it's blue and white. I change the blade once a week, think they cost about £12 for 4 but I tend to bulk buy when they're on offer.

I don't think £12 a month is a lot at all really. I spend more than that on nail polish!!

kitchensinkmum · 22/01/2014 11:05

Yes, they held her down and she did not consent . They were try to do her a favour . Apparently ! It's shocking to me , sorry to sound old fashioned but I was speechless when I heard this.
