To not want my dd to be called a skid

Not a thread about a thread but a thread about a term used on lots of threads in 'step parenting'.

I've never seen step children referred to as skids in any other place, but it seems that the step parenting board uses it quite frequently.

Like skid marks? A bit off poo left behind in pants when someone doesn't wipe properly. Nice. Is this an acceptable way to refer to anyone's children?

Dsc uses less letters so would be quicker, so why use skids? Is it a reflection on how you feel about your dsc?

AIBU to find this offensive?

I thought this was going to be about antisemitism.

Four wheel skid being cockney rhyming slang for yid.

AuntieStella · 18/01/2014 12:23

I've seen the term SKids used in many other places.

TheToysAreALIVEITellThee · 18/01/2014 12:23

are you sure its not like step kids - s-kids....skids??

Thatisall · 18/01/2014 12:25

Yes it is like step kids but skids is not a particularly nice word to use IMO. Better to use dsc which follows the pattern of dh dd ds that is used elsewhere on mumsnet rather than a word which also has fairly grim connotations

It is a horrible expression. I have three much loved step children and two 'blood' children. We became one family when they were all teenagers and all lived with us full time. One by one they went to university, came home, got jobs, married and had children of their own. We are one huge family now and.
To me skids means the pooey marks sometimes left on pants. It is dreadful to apply it to people.

MillyONaire · 18/01/2014 12:28

I quite like SKid - I wouldn't have thought of skid marks! More skid to a halt - It's cute!

AuntieStella · 18/01/2014 12:30

The usage is all over the Internet, but I was wondering if it was newly arrived on MN.

This thread from 2005 shows it's been in use here pretty much always. As have comments like those in OP.

Caitlin17 · 18/01/2014 12:30

It's horrible,although I don't like or use kids either.

Custardo · 18/01/2014 12:31

i sometimes referred to my kids as bin lids

i think this is a POism

Custardo · 18/01/2014 12:32

this thread i mean

allthingsfluffy · 18/01/2014 12:33

I agree OP. I have seen it used a few times and I think its horrible.

TheToysAreALIVEITellThee · 18/01/2014 12:33

I dunno, I see skids in the context of step kids and do not automatically think of shit, just an abbreviation of step kids.

TheToysAreALIVEITellThee · 18/01/2014 12:34

and what Custardo said.

I also use Bin Lids for kids, so skids doesnt even register on my bothered-o-meter

Joules68 · 18/01/2014 12:35

well theres nothing you can do about it op.....you cant change the fact your child is referred to in this way,its just internet speak!

Thatisall · 18/01/2014 12:37

custardo I'm scared to ask....what is a POism? Or am I just being a bit thick? Confused

hootloop · 18/01/2014 12:38

Skids reads as skid marks to me, but then I don't say kids and even my children will say 'I'm not a goat' if someone calls them kids.

Thatisall · 18/01/2014 12:39

hoot my dd does this too!! Hah! I thought I was the only one raising such a pedant Grin

PO - professionally offended

Used to describe someone who is upset by something pretty trivial, or someone who reads something wildly into a fairly insignificant and benign phrase or event.

Rooners · 18/01/2014 12:42

Oh I agree it's awful.

I didn't even know the term in its ruder context before I was on MN though.

I have a child who is someone else's step child and frankly she doesn't deserve the honour, but anyway, if she was calling him this it would just add to my distaste.

WhenWhyWhere · 18/01/2014 12:42

I use the term kids all the time. especially on MN so SKids reads just the same as SDC to me. I would never have thought of skid marks Shock .....unfortunately, I might now.

YoureBeingASillyBilly · 18/01/2014 12:42

I agree OP. its horrible go see any children referred to as skids even if it is just the amalgamation of step and kids. It looks horrible.

No such thing as PO but it seems to be the MN phrase of the year for 2013. About time they got a new one.

Thatisall · 18/01/2014 12:46

thetoys. Ahh I see. I do wish that if people are going to have a little dig, that they'd do it in plain English. Hmm

I'm not generally PO then, but I am offended by this. As a step child who was probably looked upon as a bit of a skid mark on the lives of my mother and sf and as the mother of a child who is at best an inconvenience to her father and sm, yes, I find the word offensive. Not trivial but upsetting.

TheToysAreALIVEITellThee · 18/01/2014 12:47

PO isnt just confined to MN and it does exist, I have heard it with my own two ears eg. a workmate got all PO about having her bag checked in Tesco the other day when she used the scan and shop gun. Apparently because she is 64 that automatically exempts her from standard checks the rest of us have to go through, and she should have been given more respect. She is , therefore, PO.

NinjaPenguin · 18/01/2014 12:47

If I saw it as 'skids' then my first thought would be what you're thinking, althoigh I would assume that was me. If SKids, then I would t even think that. I have seen some lovely posts with 'SKids' in, showing real care and affection for their step children.

allthingsfluffy · 18/01/2014 12:47

Well said.
