To not want my dd to be called a skid

Thatisall · 18/01/2014 12:20

Not a thread about a thread but a thread about a term used on lots of threads in 'step parenting'.

I've never seen step children referred to as skids in any other place, but it seems that the step parenting board uses it quite frequently.

Like skid marks? A bit off poo left behind in pants when someone doesn't wipe properly. Nice. Is this an acceptable way to refer to anyone's children?

Dsc uses less letters so would be quicker, so why use skids? Is it a reflection on how you feel about your dsc?

AIBU to find this offensive?

No one is calling your child a skid. They are shortening step kids so its SKids.

Unless its been used out loud then I don't understand the issue.

Is your DD actually been called a skid mark? No she isn't

TheToysAreALIVEITellThee · 18/01/2014 12:48

So OP it could be subjective to you. As I say I see skids and do not immediately think of shit on someones pants.

TheToysAreALIVEITellThee · 18/01/2014 12:49

in the context of step parenting that is.

AuntieStella · 18/01/2014 12:50

OP: I do actually get what you mean. Not because I think the term's offensive or not common, but because of the current assimilation of a huge number of new posters and as I like the MN way of putting things then I would prefer DSC to skids in the same way as I champion DH over hubbie/hubs.

Latara · 18/01/2014 12:50

'Skid' does sound like skid mark, so it is not a nice term to use.

I agree Dsc or Dsd / Dss would make more sense too.

WhenWhyWhere · 18/01/2014 12:52

I guess it is because of your history that you find it offensive. I have no 'step' history and wouldn't think to make an association with something negative. Obviously if step DC were being referred to as SKid Marks that would definitely be offensive. Confused

TheToysAreALIVEITellThee · 18/01/2014 12:52

you are being a bit PO.....but if it makes you feel any better I was a bit PO the other day when someone made a point of offering me a ginger biscuit (my hair hasa red tinge to it) instead of a digestive that was on the same plate. The bitch.

willyoulistentome · 18/01/2014 12:53

I've used it. To me it's just a quick was to write step kids. It has never occurred to me to read it as in poo stains.
I think you are being a bit oversensitive.

Thatisall · 18/01/2014 12:54

thetoys. Not so subjective as others agree? I think if you abbreviate a phrase or word and it creates a word that is a little Hmm then you have to take responsibility if that word is seen as offensive. Like if a society for Consistently Underappreciated Namechanged Thread Starters was called C.U.N.T.S. You would have to consider that cunt has other connotations.

Obviously that's a extreme example but you know what I mean Grin

OP posts:
LtEveDallas · 18/01/2014 12:54

You will read 'bad' into the phrase simply because you have 'bad' associations with being a step child.

Until you said Skid Marks (a term I have never used) I didn't see SKids as anything other than an abbreviation for Step Kids.

I use Kids all the time rather than children, simply because it's easier and as a result would happily use SKids if I had more than one as a catch all.

There are no negative connotations to the abbreviation, unless you put them there.

TheToysAreALIVEITellThee · 18/01/2014 12:56

its about 50/50 to be fair OP, and it may be subjective to those who are agreeing?

As a side I think that society sounds great, although I would be PO if I was the only one invited to join Grin

Thatisall · 18/01/2014 12:57

Perhaps it feels offensive because there are so many threads using skids and describing them in a very negative way? I've never seen the term used in AIBU when referring to dsc.

thetoys. You can be one of the founding members with me if you like, I'll bring the ginger biscuits Wink

Oh, when I joined the Army I joined the Women's Royal Army Corps, or WRAC.

Also abbreviated to Weekly Ration of Army Cunt
Or
"What do you do with a rack? You screw it against a wall"

Didn't bother me at all, despite that being far ruder. It's your reaction to a word, not the word itself I think.

YoureBeingASillyBilly · 18/01/2014 12:59

Totally agree with your latest post OP. the amalgamation creates a word that ha a not so pleasant meaning and really when talking about children that just a bit too lazy to let go imo.

TheToysAreALIVEITellThee · 18/01/2014 12:59

I am offended at the term DP

My DP was a bargain as it happens Angry

BillyBanter · 18/01/2014 12:59

My first thought that this was a cool nickname for a skateboarder or rugby player that you don't like his mates using because of my second thought that it might be someone getting traded at sil after their skiddy pants were spotted in gym class.

I think you're reading too much into this. Sounds quite affectionate to me and just an accident of word shortening.

YoureBeingASillyBilly · 18/01/2014 13:00

Sorry i mean the post of 12:54

YoureBeingASillyBilly · 18/01/2014 13:02

LtEve just because YOU chose not yo let those phrases bother does not mean they are without fault for using them.

BillyBanter · 18/01/2014 13:03

Traded at sil should be teased at school. D'oh

DameDeepRedBetty · 18/01/2014 13:04

I'd never seen skid used to mean Step Kid until on here, fairly recently. I had to work it out from the context, and I was definitely a bit eyebrow-raised about it. I'd always used dsc as the abbreviation in the past, and will continue to do so in the future.

To be fair, I don't use kid to describe a human child anyway.

MysterySpots · 18/01/2014 13:05

No-one in my family is or has a step child so I think I am quite objective about this. It's horrible, not a term of endearment at all. Down there with referring to children as rug rats.

LtEveDallas · 18/01/2014 13:05

Which phrases Yourebeing? SKids or WRAC?

Viviennemary · 18/01/2014 13:05

I wasn't sure what a skid was. But YANBU to find the term a bit offensive.

LtEveDallas · 18/01/2014 13:06

Oh I love Rug Rats and Ankle Biters Grin
