To not want my dd to be called a skid

Not a thread about a thread but a thread about a term used on lots of threads in 'step parenting'.

I've never seen step children referred to as skids in any other place, but it seems that the step parenting board uses it quite frequently.

Like skid marks? A bit off poo left behind in pants when someone doesn't wipe properly. Nice. Is this an acceptable way to refer to anyone's children?

Dsc uses less letters so would be quicker, so why use skids? Is it a reflection on how you feel about your dsc?

AIBU to find this offensive?

mystery I'm so glad you're here. I have to hold my hands up to not being able to claim I am entirely objective. This means that my opinion loses credibility sadly even though my opinion is just as valid. But you are objective. Now I don't have to feel like I'm being 'PO'

I call my kids rug rats sometimes aswell. Oh well....i am clearly going to hell so might aswell admit to sometimes flicking them the Vs when their backs are turned Grin

UsedToBeNDP · 18/01/2014 13:08

I am a step parent (have been for 13 yrs) and don't use or like the term.

BillyBanter · 18/01/2014 13:09

Of course she's not objective. How ridiculous. No one is.

Rug rats is brilliant.

edamsavestheday · 18/01/2014 13:09

It's Not Very Nice, is it? Think the MN abbreviation dsc should be preferred.

Thatisall · 18/01/2014 13:12

billy. If nobody is objective then my experience as a 'skid' shouldn't come into it then? Therefore me finding the term offensive goes back to being a valid opinion again and not one fueled solely by past experience? Excellent.

Vile term and anyone who choses it rather than typing dsc is vile.

HaroldLloyd · 18/01/2014 13:13

I see your point OP.

It feels a bit derogatory to be, when there is a totally inoffensive shortening with one less letter to type why use this?

YoureBeingASillyBilly · 18/01/2014 13:14

The WRAC and the comments about screwing it to the wall.

BillyBanter · 18/01/2014 13:20

As is my opinion. Its all just opinion.

Being made to say dsc won't change anyone's feelings towards their dsc.

StUmbrageinSkelt · 18/01/2014 13:21

I have a most adversarial relationship with my stepdaughter. I think she is horrible and her father agrees with me that her treatment of her half brothers is just appalling (she's in her 30's)

I still think skid is an awful unnecessary term that should not be used.

HaroldLloyd · 18/01/2014 13:22

I don't think rug rats is the same as skids.

I used to have a pet rat and he was a lovely old boy, as an aside.

fackinell · 18/01/2014 13:22

Not a fan of it either, even when my DSD is being a bit of a Skid! Grin

Like not coming home, leaving the front door open all night! Wink

Thatisall · 18/01/2014 13:24

billy. Perhaps I'm reading too much into your comment but are you suggesting that 'skids' is a reflection of their feelings towards their dsc?

I think it's wrong on so many levels it shouldn't be allowed to infiltrate MNet or any other language due to common usage.

Kid is slang and is the correct term for a baby/young goat.

MNet traditionally refers to daughters as dd (dear daughter); sons as ds (dear son) and children as DC. That's something I like about MNet - it is respectful to children and needs, imo, to stay that way.

Front wheel skid is cockney rhyming slang for beind Jewish - yid in the context being generally derogatory although the shortened term is front wheel not skid.

Skid is a rather unpleasant term for poo stained pants and isn't nice.

As I say, I don't think it's in the spirit of the MNet I signed up to.

thegreylady · 18/01/2014 13:26

I think if it was DSKids it would be acceptable. I always use dsc or dss or dsd on here to go along with mn convention. Just skids is not at all pleasant and suggests dislike to me.

LtEveDallas · 18/01/2014 13:26

Ah right, well yes it's pretty rotten, but I don't let it bother me because I think it said more about the wanker using it than me! We used to be told "Say W. R. A. C. In full, never WRAC" but I always abbreviated it, because it's easier and quicker. I feel the same about Skids I suppose - if you are saying the word out loud it's easier to say.

missymarmite · 18/01/2014 13:28

YWNBU to not want this, although I have never noticed this terminology on the step-parent forum before.

Are you sure that people are using it in a derogatory way, or do you think it might be just an unfortunate double meaning that people haven't (perhaps naively) noticed? Most people probably just mean S. Kids.

BillyBanter · 18/01/2014 13:30

No. I'm suggesting YOU think it is. And I think you're wrong. I don't think using dsc instead will make a difference to how step parents feel about them.

Thatisall · 18/01/2014 13:30

missy. I'm sure it's unfortunate. I'm also sure the 'offensiveness' of it hasn't escaped the notice of all the posters, infact it has been raised as an issue in one of the threads

OP posts:
missymarmite · 18/01/2014 13:31

OK. If someone uses it in that way then it is unacceptable IMO. Not nice and not necessary either.

BillyBanter · 18/01/2014 13:33

Also skid only has that association in certain circumstances. Eg in conjunction with marks. It has other meanings.

BillyBanter · 18/01/2014 13:33

And even that has more than one meaning.

LtEveDallas · 18/01/2014 13:35

I call my motorbike helmet a Skid Lid, so that's the immediate thinking outside of Step Kids.

I've certainly never used the phrase 'skid marks' - I actually think that is pretty uncouth and that from a person who swears like a trooper!

TheToysAreALIVEITellThee · 18/01/2014 13:35

Many many many things have been raised as an issue on many many many threads, people are offended, people aren't, some care, some don't give a rats fanny.

Luckily, free thinking an all that, means you can choose to use the abbreviation Skids, people can see it as nothing other than what is is, or, you can be offended, you can point out you are offended, people can stop using it or not, people can point out they are offended that people are saying they are twats / vile for using what they feel is a harmless abbreviation etc etc. Personally the abbreviation Dsc has unpleasant connections for me.

Vicious circle that goes round and round and round.
