to think older teens should be made to watch what an abortion is in PHSE. (sorry possibly triggering)

I know this may be controversial but I have thought this for some time.
Abortion is legal in this country but still straight forward , informative talks about it are clouded by morality and judgement and at the end of the day, sometimes people need to have one in tragic circumstances i.e people who are made critically ill by pregnancy.
And are often as well as already scared and sad, i don't think most people make this decision lightly, are woefully underprepared which i'm sure must only add to emotional trauma.
and of course there are too many potential uninterested fathers who just utter 'get rid of it' at the hearing of potentially being a father, so disgustingly flippantly like throwing a crisp packet in the bin, I do think if they especially had seen a medical video of the procedure, well i think the number of people who just thrown that term around would be significantly less, if they had actually seen that image with their own eyes , and would be less detached from the idea and process.
I'm talking older teens , like 16+ here , not 11 year olds.
my mum and i have always though this, i would find it traumatising and pretty shocking, but compared to people who feel shame, go backstreet putting themselves at risk and people who go through with pregnancies they did not want/need. Surely a bit of discomfort is better then that being a legacy of another generation.

YABU. Are you trying to shame women into not having abortions? What on Earth do you think this is going to achieve?

Vates · 04/11/2021 12:45

No, simple as that. If I had ever got pregnant when I was sexually active then I would have had an abortion as soon as possible. I always used contraceptives and would have been very unlucky if I got pregnant. I decided at 14/15 years old that I never wanted children.

Mydogisagentleman · 04/11/2021 13:16

Unbelievable

BonesInTheOcean · 04/11/2021 13:20

@fifi669

Are you talking about seeing a dead fetus? I think that's a bit extreme myself. Rather a 3d scan of a baby in the womb to make it seem real rather than a line on a stick. A friend had a 3d scan at 17 weeks, amazing to look at. Bit freaked out that you could have an abortion up to 7 weeks after for no good reason.

Excuse me??

I had an ERPC (evacuation of the remaining products of conception- lovely term) at 8 weeks after a miscarriage. Medical staff said it would be basically the same as a termination at that stage. General anaesthetic, cervix dilated after a pessary was used, the mc was basically suctioned out and that was that.
Not sure what there would be to see? I recovered quickly, ate a sandwich and went home. Hardly traumatic and totally pain free. If I had needed a termination at any stage, watching my ERPC would not have made me change my mind.

It would be wise to show all 13 year olds the Lamaze introductory natural childbirth film. It shows the baby crowning and being delivered. I saw it at 14 in Biology class, and it made me and my peers want to delay sex until we were older.

VeganCheesePlease · 05/11/2021 18:57

I've seen some mad stuff here but this is a new type of madness.
I went to a Catholic maintained school. We were taught sex was bad and abortions are evil and we had numerous teen pregnancies. What we need is better sex education, and non biased advice about the different types of contraception. Shaming and traumatising teenagers in this way won't help a bloody thing. I'm honestly a bit shocked, and like I said I've seen some mad shit on MN.

What a nasty idea- it smacks of punishing people for having sex or making a mistake that need not define their life. I think that very often having an abortion is the bravest and most sensible thing to do. Maybe showing people life with a typical newborn might also put people off having a baby? I do like the phrase Keep Your Rosaries Off My Ovaries. Other people’s religious views have no right to impact the way I live my life.

ELOU1111 · 05/11/2021 19:24

So you want them to enter into having an abortion full of the maximum amount of fear as some sort of punishment? Shame on you.

@TeaBooksCrumpets what was the point!!!

LyricalBoudicca · 05/11/2021 20:01

I think it important to be kept informed of what happens in an abortion. Glossing over the moral issues involved or pretending they don't exist is a disservice to any woman. Contemptuous even.

@YoureBeingASillyBilly

YABU

I was shown footage of Aborted foetuses at my catholic secondary school in religion class. It infuriated me. It is propaganda used by the anti abortion crowd to shock people into having feelings of disgust wrt what is sometime the right option for many women. Shame on those who use this type of shock tactic.

So was I, it was horrible. I remember it now.

Not2daySatan · 05/11/2021 20:09

I went to a Catholic school. When we were 14 we were shown a program called the silent scream. It pretty much described a surgical abortion and showed ultrasound of one and showed the tools for a d&c. It was horrific. My dc didn't go to the school but if they did I guarantee they wouldn't have watched it.

HandlebarLadyTash · 05/11/2021 20:15

If a teenager wants to see an abortion they will find it on line
They need to know there are choices to keep or to terminate & there is no judgement
I dont regret my termination it was the right decision for that time of my life
