to think older teens should be made to watch what an abortion is in PHSE. (sorry possibly triggering)

I know this may be controversial but I have thought this for some time.
Abortion is legal in this country but still straight forward , informative talks about it are clouded by morality and judgement and at the end of the day, sometimes people need to have one in tragic circumstances i.e people who are made critically ill by pregnancy.
And are often as well as already scared and sad, i don't think most people make this decision lightly, are woefully underprepared which i'm sure must only add to emotional trauma.
and of course there are too many potential uninterested fathers who just utter 'get rid of it' at the hearing of potentially being a father, so disgustingly flippantly like throwing a crisp packet in the bin, I do think if they especially had seen a medical video of the procedure, well i think the number of people who just thrown that term around would be significantly less, if they had actually seen that image with their own eyes , and would be less detached from the idea and process.
I'm talking older teens , like 16+ here , not 11 year olds.
my mum and i have always though this, i would find it traumatising and pretty shocking, but compared to people who feel shame, go backstreet putting themselves at risk and people who go through with pregnancies they did not want/need. Surely a bit of discomfort is better then that being a legacy of another generation.

I'm not sure why you think it would be beneficial. Males who say "just get rid" aren't going to care either way.

I'm guessing what you actually mean is one of those videos of late-ish term abortion where it looks like a major surgical procedure and would put people off in theory. Except it probably wouldn't put them off having sex, just off the abortion.

Are you going to balance your dose of reality video with the alternatives? How about a bunch of videos showing real births (including one of a c-section, forceps, etc etc) and some showing the realities of being a parent...

motherinferior · 13/01/2014 17:33

I think they should be taught a lot more about sex. And indeed the many sorts of sex that don't risk pregnancy. And about contraception. And yes, about termination as an option.

MoominIsGoingToBeAMumWaitWHAT · 13/01/2014 17:33

That is, YANBU about wanting young women to be shown the options they have, if that's what you're getting at. YABU if this is pro-life propaganda you're advocating. Abortion is a choice that women are and always should be entitled to for whatever reason, at whatever age. So is keeping the baby. The realities shouldn't be hidden from them, but they should be shown objectively and in a way that will inform, but never influence a decision.

YABU to want teenagers to actually be shown videos of an abortion being carried out.

WorraLiberty · 13/01/2014 17:33

I went to a school with lots of girls under 16 who had several, ( rough area) must have been awful with little or no education on the subject.

Educating them and letting them know what procedures are available is fine.

But why show them a video?

That's just going to traumatise them even more

Thisisaghostlyeuphemism · 13/01/2014 17:33

We need more forced births, we need more reluctant unhappy mothers, we need more unwanted babies.

Oh, no we don't.

formerbabe · 13/01/2014 17:34

Many people have abortions and don't experience emotional trauma. Pictures of aborted fetuses do not change my stance on the issue.

StraightLineOfResignation · 13/01/2014 17:34

why can it not be used to educate , it doesn't have to graphic, but i'm sure so many go unprepared mentally,

I think some people are just willfully obtuse on here , oh well nevermind.its a shame really, could have been a decent discussion.

Which religion are you affiliated with, OP?

OddFodd · 13/01/2014 17:35

I've had about 20 fillings. I've never seen a film of a tooth being filled but it doesn't stop me from making an informed decision about whether to have dental work done

formerbabe · 13/01/2014 17:36

I am well aware of what an abortion entails. It wouldn't change anything in my mind if I watched one.

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 13/01/2014 17:36

YABU. People think oh, I've got appendicitis, I'd better have an appendectomy... Bet they'd think twice if they had to watch all the blood and gore, eh?
Silly idea.

WorraLiberty · 13/01/2014 17:37

You'll find people get willfully obtuse when OP's have a flimsily hidden agenda...

motherinferior · 13/01/2014 17:37

Mind you, a few interviews with happy smiley women who've had abortions and are utterly unscarred by the experience might be a good idea...

fifi669 · 13/01/2014 17:37

juno I'm unashamably anti abortion unless the mother or child's health is at serious risk. To me, that's the only good reason. I understand why others do, but in cases of too many children, sexual assault etc you don't need to wait til the fetus is 24 weeks to decide you don't want to continue. Decided against it, in normal circumstances, isn't a good reason to end a life.

lilyaldrin · 13/01/2014 17:38

What exactly do you want to show though StraightLine? Someone 7 weeks pregnant, going to the doctor, taking pills, experiencing cramps?

Or someone going to their 20 week scan, finding their much wanted baby has a condition incompatible with life, showing them agonising over what to do and then going through a termination?

I'm not sure how much a graphic video is going to enlighten teenagers in either scenario.

mrsjay · 13/01/2014 17:38

it is graphic though and emotive a womans abortion is her business not for people to view imo.

Szeli · 13/01/2014 17:38

Yes, I assume you mean late term? I panicked and booked a termination upon finding myself 18 weeks pregnant (on the pill) and then after speaking to a friend about her termination and our friends 19w miscarriage rang the bps(?) and asked them to talk me through the procedure bit by bit, I went on to have a lovely little boy.

I was actually shocked at how little I knew at the age of 25, and even when booking the appointment noone mentioned the actual procedure. its kept very hush hush and as it is a choice we have in this country I think we could do to be more informed perhaps from the start

meddie · 13/01/2014 17:38

How is showing late abortions educating. Sounds more like trying to guilt trip girls into not having one to me. I would much rather young women were educated on relationships and valueing themselves so they are less likely to end up in abusive relationships

JapaneseMargaret · 13/01/2014 17:39

fifi - how many women leave it until 24 weeks unless there is a serious abnormality?

Many, do you think....?

WorraLiberty · 13/01/2014 17:39

Yes, I've had a few smear tests but I've never seen a video of one being performed.

Just as well really or I might have chickened out

Oh no wait, you want pregnant women to chicken out of having an abortion don't you?

NeoFaust · 13/01/2014 17:39

welshnat

Abortion is not a womans job it's a womans right and one that men are well aware they have no control over.

formerbabe · 13/01/2014 17:39

Most women who have abortions for non medical reasons do so way before the 24 week limit so that argument is pretty much null and void.

pianodoodle · 13/01/2014 17:40

How ridiculous. So someone in the situation where a termination might be the best course of action for them has to go through it having previously been "educated" by watching a video of one?!

And if watching that video makes them unable to go through with the termination would you consider that a good thing despite the fact that having the baby might be detrimental to them?

mrsjay · 13/01/2014 17:40

women and young women are given counsilling (sp) before they have a termination and 2 Doctors have to agree (if i remember right) they do not need footage at 16

StraightLineOfResignation · 13/01/2014 17:41

What? I'm not anti- abortion in the slightest, even though personally i'd never have one (not moral reasons) I don't judge people who do.

Did I come across anti- abortion in my OP? Confused Angry
