to not think my new baby girl is beautiful?

Am i missing something? Surely i'm her mother, the hormones should be blinding me into seeing her as a beauty. Yes she's cute, she looks like a baby bird, all baldy with a few fuzzy bits on top. I love her to bits, she's a dream baby, way easier than her two big brothers were. But she's not pretty. I know she will be! Am I an unnatural parent for seeing her how she is!?

YANBU. I have never seen babies as beautiful, more like skinned rabbits.

Conratulations!

JoinYourPlayfellows · 10/01/2014 16:12

I felt the same about my second baby.

Looking at pictures of her as a newborn recently I realised that, in fact, I was blinded by hormones, because she was actually an extremely ugly baby and I thought she was just not the cutest. :o

lynniep · 10/01/2014 16:13

nah. I saw both of mine exactly how they were. squinty eyed. blotchy. baby acne'd. dodgy hair. ds2 was a right old bloater when he came out (and didn't I feel it!) I found neither of them in the least bit pretty. not till they were a good 12 weeks old.
they are of course gorgeous now!

YoureBeingASillyBilly · 10/01/2014 16:13

Not unnatural at all. When ds1 was born they set him up on my belly and i expected to be overwhelmed with how beautiful he was. My reaction was more "huh- so thats what you look like" and it wasnt that i thought him ugly- he was pudgy and red and his face still screwed up but cute. I think i was expecting to feel a sense of familiarity but i didnt at all. He looked just like any other baby i'd seen and i felt bad for not thinking he looked beautiful. He does now though, of course Grin

Congratulations btw

JimmyChooChoo · 10/01/2014 16:14

You're an unnatural parent for even thinking about looks be honest.

MeepMeepVrooooom · 10/01/2014 16:14

My baby girl looked like a wee wrinkly prune when she was born, a lovely wee wrinkly prune but a prune all the same Grin

JimmyChooChoo · 10/01/2014 16:14
  • To be honest.
AnythingNotEverything · 10/01/2014 16:14

Most new babies aren't beautiful. Most of them look like baby birds. Most parent are deluded.

Don't worry - she'll actually be gorgeous in no time. After the dry skin and acne and snorting has cleared up.

DipDabDabDip · 10/01/2014 16:15

When dd was born she looked like a squished puffy old man! Plus she was overdue and her hands looked massive and wrinkly like she'd been in a bath for far too long!

Loopylouu · 10/01/2014 16:16

Ds looked like a troll for weeks. He even had the sticky up hair.

candycoatedwaterdrops · 10/01/2014 16:17

YANBU. Most newborns are ugly.

Lj8893 · 10/01/2014 16:17

Yanbu.
Sometimes my dd pulls the ugliest faces, but sometimes she really looks beautiful. I think she will always be like that!

I'm a bit like that though, quite pretty I think but very expressive and my facial expressions can sometimes be horrible!!

SkateLife · 10/01/2014 16:17

When ds was born, he looked like a squished up old man. People would look in the pram and go "Oh". Not like they did with dd who was like a doll from day one. He is beautiful now, has the biggest softest eyes.

dontwanttobefatandforty · 10/01/2014 16:18

Jimmy in that case I too am an unnatural mother, I didn't think my kids where beautiful. Once their faces filled out then their looks changed and improved. Although they still pulled and still do some expressions that are just ugly!

Longdistance · 10/01/2014 16:18

Dd1 wasn't beaitiful, she looked like my dh at birth. We nicknamed her Kevina. My dh is s rugby player that looks like he's been hit by a bus. S o not a beautiful look Grin

She's 4 now and is gorgeous.

MothershipG · 10/01/2014 16:18

YANBU

DS was an ok looking baby and a very pretty toddler, DD was not! DS had golden curls, DD had male pattern baldness until she was about 3. Then suddenly she got pretty and stayed that way! DS was pretty until he hit puberty last year and started actually looking like a boy. Wink

EduCated · 10/01/2014 16:19

Apparently I looked permanently disgruntled for the first 6 months of my life Grin

Monkeyandanimal · 10/01/2014 16:20

I've no doubt she will blossom, as she looks exactly like DS2 did, looking back at his pictures and comparing them. He is a stunning 2 year old now, really gorgeous. But at the time i thought he was beautiful, though looking back i can see that he was pretty plain. Jimmy i get what you are saying and i am a little concerned that what i'm thinking indicates that i might not be bonding with my girl or something. I hope not, she's lovely. And i am trying to find a picture of her that will do for thank you cards and failing.... Sad but only a bit.

Unnatural parent?!

Jesus wept Jimmy. I think it is pretty obvious this is a lighthearted thread - your comment is totally OTT and PO.

MedusaIsHavingaBadHairday · 10/01/2014 16:22

I remember my third child being placed in my arms... and my response was 'awww she looks like a bulldog!' Grin She did too! Luckily she improved over time and is now a stunning teenager. She needed a while to unsquish tho!

Even with my first I could see that actually she did look like Winston Churchill! Only DS1 looked remotely decent at birth!

Headlikeafuckingorange · 10/01/2014 16:24

My dd had a squashed angry old man face (especially her little nose which was also covered in milk spots) but over the weeks she changed a lot and is a beautiful almost 5 month old now!

TheFantasticFixit · 10/01/2014 16:24

Monkey ignore Jimmy and the nasty comment. It's perfectly normal to be a little more 'objective'. In fact it's attitudes like Jimmy's that make mothers feel like 'unnatural' failures if they aren't experiencing the 'Disney' emotions post birth. Give DD a couple more weeks when she's unfurled a little more and she'll be the apple of your eye

SPsMrLoverManSHABBA · 10/01/2014 16:25

My son looked like a de-shelled turtle when he was born. He was nicknamed Yoshi (mean I know) Grin

my sister looked hideous. She's super cute now though

Headlikeafuckingorange · 10/01/2014 16:25

She also looked like a sumo Grin

cashmiriana · 10/01/2014 16:26

I had one that looked like she was wearing a thick black horror costume wig, and was odd looking for ages. This will out me to my family, but there is a classic photo of her aged about 7 months that my mum took one look at and fell about laughing on the basis that DD1 was the spit of Roy Cropper.

She was.

DD2 looked like an alien for all of 10 minutes then smoothed out into this perfect smooth skinned dimpled little angel with a cupids bow mouth.

By 3 months she was scrawny.

They are both gorgeous now.
