to not think my new baby girl is beautiful?

Am i missing something? Surely i'm her mother, the hormones should be blinding me into seeing her as a beauty. Yes she's cute, she looks like a baby bird, all baldy with a few fuzzy bits on top. I love her to bits, she's a dream baby, way easier than her two big brothers were. But she's not pretty. I know she will be! Am I an unnatural parent for seeing her how she is!?

YANBU. I remember looing at new born DS2 and thinking 'he looks like a frog!'. He's a lot cuter now Grin

tethersend · 10/01/2014 17:19

Yy, Rhonda- I thought DD1 was the most exquisitely beautiful thing I had ever laid eyes on. I remember thinking that all the other mothers on the maternity ward must be jealous of me because she was so utterly gorgeous. I now realised that she looked like a small hammerhead shark wrapped in a blanket Grin

When DD2 arrived, I am ashamed to say we were both a bit 'meh'. She looked weird. I think she's gorgeous now, of course, but she is beautiful in a quirky, cheeky way.

My ds came out so fast he had a little pointed head for about a day and the first thing my dh said when the midwife put him on my chest was "omg he looks like an alien"! Best looking boy in the world now of course!

ToysRLuv · 10/01/2014 17:26

DS looked like an old man/alien with a mushroom shaped head. We had to ask nurses, whether his head was normal (it was Grin ) Looks nice now.

nf1morethanjustlumpsandbumps · 10/01/2014 17:26

DS was tiny and scrawny and was so yellow with jaundice he looked like a canary, he is still my baby bird today.

I also thought oh fuck he looks like my FIL small, grumpy looking, big head and bald. He is still long and skinny as a whippet now but has grew into his head Grin and looks nothing like any one in the family at all.

GideonKipper · 10/01/2014 17:30

I thought DD1 was the most gorgeous baby I'd ever seen when I clapped eyes on her (she was tiny and doll like). Dd2 came along and I kept looking at her thinking she looked like Bernard Manning Shock. Dd3 was like a perfect mini DH.

They are all lovely in different ways, but out of the three it is Bernard Manning who gets the most comments about what a gorgeous girl she is! They change so much.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 10/01/2014 17:30

DD wasn't exactly ugly, but she looked a bit like something Jim Henson had given up on: spiky black hair, mouth too small, weird paranoid glare.

ShadowFall · 10/01/2014 17:46

YANBU.

I fell in love with DS1 the minute I saw him, but he definitely wasn't a pretty newborn. His head was extremely misshapen.

He spent his first 3.5 weeks in SCBU, and every paediatrician who saw him commented on how dysmorphic (medical term for abnormal) his head and face looked. And I think it's perfectly natural and normal to think about a baby's looks. Especially if every medical professional you meet for the first few weeks of your baby's life has a comment on how abnormal your baby looks.

Happily that all resolved itself though, and DS1 looks like a perfectly normal toddler now Smile

MsAspreyDiamonds · 10/01/2014 17:53

Blimey you have started judging her on her looks already! She doesn't stand a chance in the outside world does she?

RevoltingPeasant · 10/01/2014 17:59

This thread is making me cackle and cackle... 'male pattern baldness'....'small hammerhead shark in a blanket'....'I loved him even when he looked like Kim Jong Un'....

Grin Grin Grin

Monkeyandanimal · 10/01/2014 18:08

i don't think i have judged her!

Arf at rod Stewart!

My first had been a bit tight for space in there and came out looking most annoyed and with his nose bent over to one side. It took several days to recover.

I've never believed all babies are beautiful by virtue of the fact they're babies so therefore must be.

In my experience, those of my friends who had alarming looking babies have ended up with really lovely looking kids, but they had to grow into their faces.

KurriKurri · 10/01/2014 19:48

Like Yoda my daughter looked when she was born. Love her anyway I did. Hmmmmmm.

MrsDavidBowie · 10/01/2014 19:52

My dd looked like something from the Planet Zog.
Bald, fat, random eczema on her face like bullet wounds.

We looked back in horror At her baby photos. People would look in her pram expecting to see something cure and cuddly, and practically recoiled Grin

she is now 17 and stunning. And regularly gets the albums out and laughs at them

SuckItAndSee · 10/01/2014 19:52

yanbu

my DDs were, and are, cute as buttons to me, but objectively speaking they were definitely not conventionally beautiful babies

one had too much sticky-up hair, like Don King, and the other not enough, like a Mitchell brother.

hickorychicken · 10/01/2014 19:53

I look back at picturez of newborn dds and they look so red and angry!! Yet at the time i thought they were beauts Grin

ElleCloughie · 10/01/2014 19:54

My mum has said that she was so disappointed when my DB was born. Apparently I was all squishy and cute, but he was just funny looking. He is now by far the most attractive member of our family. In fact, even by the time he ws toddler he was adorable

TheGreatHunt · 10/01/2014 19:55

I thought, no I knew my babies were beautiful.

Now they're a bit older, I occasionally think oh maybe they won't be objectively beautiful but babies are to me.

Mine had huge mops of hair though. bald babies are not cute

RobinSparkles · 10/01/2014 19:57

God, my two looked like Grant Mitchell's uglier twin brother!

YANBU.

Now, of course, they're the most beautiful little girls that ever lived. Newborns are funny looking!

My sister, otoh, produces beautiful newborns Confused.

likeit · 10/01/2014 19:57

YANBu. I an quite honest about my children. My son was quite ugly when young. He's got better with age. My daughter is quite attractive and I think she will be beautiful as she gets older.

WitchWay · 10/01/2014 19:59

Newborns are mostly scrunched up & rumpled - cute but not pretty IMO

Lizzylou · 10/01/2014 20:01

Kurri Grin
The youngest of my brothers looked like a mass murderer as a newborn, He is now, apparently, completely gorgeous.

Ds2 looked like a gorilla, complete with hairy back, he is extremely handsome now and was very beautiful, almost pretty from age 3mths +.
Congratulations Thanks

CustardOmlet · 10/01/2014 20:01

Good god my son was an ugly baby, very unfortunate! He's pretty cute now though thankfully!

Eebahgum · 10/01/2014 20:02

When ds was born he was the most gorgeous baby I'd ever seen. This had absolutely nothing to do with the shape of his head or the way his face looked. It was more a feeling from inside me.

pictish · 10/01/2014 20:03

My dd looked like a teeny tiny Robbie Coltrane when she was born.
She sure as hell doesn't look like that now!
