To have spent £180 on a diary

Early finish and drinks after work (Pitcher and Piano on Cornhill in London if it makes any difference).

Stumbled out of there well oiled, spotted Smythsons over the road at Royal Exchange and remembered I'd been asked by the missus for a diary for Xmas.

I went to pay and they wanted £180. That's £2 per day!

It's a nice diary but the price is still a bit toppy.

Just hope she like it

"Made in Chelsea posh. Like Barbour."
Ouch, Curlew, I hope Sam the Cam reads that!

Smythsons - for people new to money

I love Smythson products and certainly don't see them as appealing to people who like to spend for the sake of it. Mainly because they don't tend to make really "identifiable" products.

The only reason I don't have anything from there is because I just don't use stationery, diaries, albums etc. I might start looking at their purses, though.

I have some very conservative friends who buy from there because the quality is excellent and the products are understated. Luxurious, but low key.

SirChenjin · 21/12/2013 16:53

So those little gold letters mean nothing, eh?! Wink

GogoGobo · 21/12/2013 16:59

YABU, should have stumbled into Boodles...

almapudden · 21/12/2013 17:02

Aspinall's is nicer, obviously Grin

So that black leather book with "Blondes, redheads and brunettes" gold blocked on the front......completely anonymous?

bunnymother · 21/12/2013 17:21

The Smythson branding is far more subtle than some. No comment on those notebooks.

curlew · 21/12/2013 17:22

Honestly, bunny- Smythson positively shrieks Smythson!

Lavenderhoney · 21/12/2013 17:29

How lovely! Did you get anything embossed on the front in gold?

And I hope you cleared two weeks in August for her for that trip to the maldives:)

Strategic shop placement. Very effective. Why aren't they sponsoring wine in the bar this time of year?

I'd like one, anyway. Is it in pale blue? Envy

Whatever floats yo boat and what you can afford i suppose!

Hope it was made of more than just paper, and covered in gold lol

SirChenjin · 21/12/2013 17:40

Think of the quality of the diarising Pumpkin - Smythson diaries actually take you to event in question, dontcha know? [Grin]

superlambanana · 21/12/2013 18:09

I'd go up the wall with DH if he spent that much on a diary, but that's because relative to our income it's a heck of a lot. If he spent £40 on a lovely diary for me I'd love it - it's relative to income, so if yours allows it OP and you clearly think she will like it then I don't see bathing wrong with that.

Now Egusta's piano - that I would pay £180 for!! Grin

MissRabbitsOtherJob · 27/12/2013 16:22

For what it's worth she absolutely loves the diary and was one happy bunny on Xmas day.

Well that's a relief! brownie points for you then!

diddl · 27/12/2013 17:47

What a surprise OP-not!

StupidMistakes · 27/12/2013 17:59

That's ridiculous, please say your still drunk and forgot the full stop after the 1 so its £1.80, mine cost me a whole pound in the pound shop! And its a page a day!

Loopytiles · 27/12/2013 18:57

Ridiculous. Many many years ago, pre DC, DH bought me some kind of big photo album from smythson or similar, never used it, think is festering in the loft somewhere. Now wondering if should dig it out and ebay it. Am Shock at the prices!

Loopytiles · 27/12/2013 18:58

He was also pissed when he bought it, maybe that's their strategy!

chocolatemademefat · 27/12/2013 22:31

Cant imagine being thrilled with ANY diary on christmas morning, no matter what it cost. Show off.

Rosencrantz · 27/12/2013 22:32
