To have spent £180 on a diary

Early finish and drinks after work (Pitcher and Piano on Cornhill in London if it makes any difference).

Stumbled out of there well oiled, spotted Smythsons over the road at Royal Exchange and remembered I'd been asked by the missus for a diary for Xmas.

I went to pay and they wanted £180. That's £2 per day!

It's a nice diary but the price is still a bit toppy.

Just hope she like it

To the poster who spent £60 on a washing up bowl.....please link, I need to see it !

MissRabbitsOtherJob · 21/12/2013 10:43

LEM, thanks for the offer but the current wife wouldn't be too happy about it.

I don't feel so good, time for a speedball of Alka Seltzer XS and Berocca. Breakfast of champions

is each page of the diary covered in gold leaf?!?

Mabelandrose · 21/12/2013 10:48

Last day for Christmas delivery for those inspired to get one too!

Topaz25 · 21/12/2013 10:57

Since she asked for a diary I think she probably didn't want you to spend too much money. I wouldn't spend that amount on a diary personally because I can think of lots of other things I'd rather spend it on. I think £180 is pretty much our whole Christmas budget! It's your money though.

drbonnieblossman · 21/12/2013 11:09

This is a great thread. I hope your wife loves her gift.

we all have differing financial situations and priorities. if you're in a position to splash the cash, why not? and buying British is always a winner.

Belize · 21/12/2013 11:14

MissRabbit, I was on your side last night! I so do understand spending money on nice things.

Hope your head feels better soon Smile

I still use a paper diary, its a lovely academic one from wilkos. Didn't realise diaries were obsolete!

Haha, I too love this thread!

I think the fact that she asked for a diary (she could have got herself one at the supermarket etc) and obviously knowing your character (I'm guessing this won't have been the first drunken spending spree of your marriage...please do tell of previous outings!) means she's desperately hoping this is exactly what you would end up doing - and for these reasons she will love it; and you even more for 'being you' and she already enjoys a Smythsons iPad cover and purse No brainer!

Your cock up recovery of the maths/spending boast just made you even more endearing really

MoreThanChristmasCrackers · 21/12/2013 11:37

OP

"The current wife"? OMD that just says the lot, maybe she'll feel better knowing that even though she's just the current wife, you spend £180 on a diary.

I haven't read the whole thread but this is my idea of the best Christmas present in the world. Honestly!

I LOVE Smythsons and for a while had a new diary every year. I have them all still, all lovely different colours and each one has memories in it. They are lined up on a bookshelf.

I can't believe people are up in arms about an expensive diary. It is a classic and lovely present.

Well done OP, I bet your wife will be delighted.

(Disclaimer, I do not have an iPhone or BlackBerry etc, I like paper)

SirChenjin · 21/12/2013 11:44

"The current wife"

Coughs . Based on that alone, yes, you absolutely should have spent £180 on a diary. I am delighted that you're now £180 lighter than you were yesterday - and if your current wife has any sense she'll ask you for a whole lot Smythson before she moves on to "the one"

I would love a Smythson diary. However, it would then have to live in my handbag with all the sticky toddler sweets and random crap. It would be sacrilege.
I am sure your wife will love it {smile]

TheGonnagle · 21/12/2013 11:50

Xmas Smile even.

southeastastra · 21/12/2013 11:50

it's a shame she'll only use it for a year Grin

Wuxiapian · 21/12/2013 11:52

If you can afford it and you don't think DW would disapprove of the money spent (for what is, essentially, a notepad), then why not?!

MissRabbitsOtherJob · 21/12/2013 11:53

For those criticising, I could have stumbled out of the bar and gone into Agent Provocateur next door, but that would have been a waste. Ever since DS was born I think she's been getting her pants from the army surplus shop, they're certainly enormous enough to be used to keep snow off tanks

Really happy I don't work in the city of London anymore or go drinking there.

SirChenjin · 21/12/2013 11:55

Maybe she's just not that into you?

somersethouse · 21/12/2013 11:55

oh dear...

JinglingRexManningDay · 21/12/2013 11:56

€235 for a bleedin diary?? Shock

Some people need to be shot with balls of their own shite. It may look great in five years time but she won't be able to use it after 2014.
