To have spent £180 on a diary

Early finish and drinks after work (Pitcher and Piano on Cornhill in London if it makes any difference).

Stumbled out of there well oiled, spotted Smythsons over the road at Royal Exchange and remembered I'd been asked by the missus for a diary for Xmas.

I went to pay and they wanted £180. That's £2 per day!

It's a nice diary but the price is still a bit toppy.

Just hope she like it

Smythsons - for people new to money

Love this!

deepbluewave · 28/12/2013 11:52

I would be gutted at that! What a total waste of moolah. It just looks like a standard whsmith affair!
And in 365 days, it will go in the bin.

crazyspaniel · 28/12/2013 12:36

You've been robbed, mate. Diaries are free from the stationery cupboard at work.

DownstairsMixUp · 28/12/2013 12:48

I would LTB if my DP bought that for me. He knows I'd prefer several bottles of vodka and cheese for that cash. A diary Shock

UsedToBeNDP · 28/12/2013 12:57

This year DH has drunk bought one mini break and one villa holiday for vastly overinflated sums. OP, it could've been worse.

Badvocatyuletide · 28/12/2013 13:01

They can't be that good if people have to be pissed to buy them :)

MissRabbitsOtherJob · 29/12/2013 11:07

You don't have to be drunk to buy things from there.

I was sober as a judge when I got her the purse and handbag last year (that the diary matches).

I'm surprised (although I probably shouldn't be given that this is MN) that this thread quickly changed from me being stupid to a reverse snobbery attack on anything that doesn't come from Lidl.

Hi OP. I think it's a lovely present for your DW if you can afford. I would love to have something special like that ( if she is using it like me )...
I hope she enjoyed it( I didn't read full thread). You pay price for quality items and if you are blessed that you can buy them, it's great. Many people can't ( including me) and me and my DH are working hard but surely if I could buy something fancy and luxurious I definitely would. It's for your sweetheart and it's lovely thought from you...( dreaming about diary from Asda :()

Eggsiseggs · 29/12/2013 11:40

Pissed shopping. Responsible for so many of the purchases chez Eggsiseggs.

IME, it beats pissed 'commitments' ('WHY did you promise our semi-friends we would go away with them that weekend?!!' 'Ach, I dunno, I was pissed')

Or...pissed gambling. Rarely a great idea.

I would have loved a Smythsons diary!

Loopytiles · 29/12/2013 16:38

Grin DownstairsMixUp "He knows I'd prefer several bottles of vodka and cheese for that cash" You could prob get much gin and naice ham in addition!

Boo for further boastfulness on the bag and purse OP. You'd probably get more appreciation from the stationery-porn thread types like thenightisdark.

Bourjois · 29/12/2013 17:08

PLEASE MARRY ME SO THAT I CAN HAVE THAT DIARY!! Hope she likes it.

However, my lovely DH managed to get his hands on the Selfridges advent calendar for me, so I am a very lucky woman.

I still have to unload my own dishwasher though FGS.

madeindevon2 · 29/12/2013 17:39

I also had a smythson diary under the tree this year and I was very chuffed! good choice op!

financialwizard · 29/12/2013 17:46

Sod it, you only live once and if you can afford it and your Mrs liked it who gives a monkeys.

TheArticFunky · 29/12/2013 17:49

I wouldn't spend more than £20 on a diary. It's all relative though if you have money to throw away why not throw it at a diary.

For that money I would expect something extra special and unless it comes with its own PA I can't see how any diary is worth that amount of money.

TheArticFunky · 29/12/2013 17:54

I have just looked at their diaries on their website. They really are nothing special at all.

MissRabbitsOtherJob · 29/12/2013 20:41

ArticFunky the website picture doesn't do it justice, the feel and quality are stunning.

wonderingsoul · 29/12/2013 21:07

had a look... nothing special, even a bit standerd and boring.. .. even if the feel and quality is great i wouldnt pay £180 for a dairy even if i was a millionair.
so on that count i am going to say yabu

TheArticFunky · 30/12/2013 08:47

But the feel and quality isn't going to make that much difference .

I can't help but think that there is something of the emperors new clothes about it.

Why are some brands seen as naff - Superdry, Burberry etc and yet brands like Smythesons (or whatever they are called) and Le crueset are deemed desirable. At least the casserole dishes last a lifetime (although I have also been using my Sainsburys one for the last 20 years) but a diary lasts one year. I just hope it turns out to be a good year!
