To have spent £180 on a diary

Early finish and drinks after work (Pitcher and Piano on Cornhill in London if it makes any difference).

Stumbled out of there well oiled, spotted Smythsons over the road at Royal Exchange and remembered I'd been asked by the missus for a diary for Xmas.

I went to pay and they wanted £180. That's £2 per day!

It's a nice diary but the price is still a bit toppy.

Just hope she like it

I didn't realise diaries got more expensive than £35, so this thread was educational!

But, yes, you are unreasonable. Think of the books you could have got her, or DVDs. Or a games console instead! Or games for the one you already have.

MarthasChin · 21/12/2013 03:29

She will club you with it when she finds out how much it cost, you daft sod! If I was opening a gift that cost £180, I'd be pretty disappointed with a diary, or a quarter of a diary if it's costing you £2 a day Xmas Wink

Eastpoint · 21/12/2013 03:54

That's a great present to the rest of us -£150 of diary & £30 of VAT. Keep spending OP, Mulberry handbag next.

singaporefling · 21/12/2013 05:36

Doesn't everyone know that everything at smythson costs an arm and two legs drunk or sober? Bought dd1 a similarly overpriced monogrammed notebook as a VERY special present when going to uni (only because I had a credit note from dh buying me the 'wrong' ipad case etc etc) Anyway, she has of course said it's "far too naice to use" and she writes in her spiralbound (never noticed how lovely that word is before Xmas Blush) A4 notebook from whsmiff Xmas Grin

coraltoes · 21/12/2013 07:04

Between this thread and the candle one I have discovered it is an OUTRAGE to buy anything other than items from pound land or make your own. I am in the spend camp. Smythsons is lovely. I have personalised cards from there, a small notebook and often buy bits in their sale. OP- nice world. I am sure she will love it.

Have a merry christmas (and hope you have no hangover today!)

happytalk13 · 21/12/2013 07:13

Your money - spend it how you like! Hope she likes it.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 21/12/2013 07:27

It's the same on the handbag threads where handbag lovers get told to buy a bench instead.

TheMuppetsSingChristmas · 21/12/2013 07:31

How's your head this morning op?! For all that I teased you up thread, I'm actually also one of those that would also secretly love such a beautiful and extravagant present Blush The feel of the leather alone would be incredible and it has a function too, win all round to me!

Birdsgottafly · 21/12/2013 07:44

"didn't realise diaries got more expensive than £35"

I live in HA housing and spent £54 on my diary, it is refillable though.

I treated myself to a (TKMaxx) handbag and diary after qualifying and getting my first job interview in my role.

We need people to spend money, you have (as another poster pointed out) given the economy £30 and haven't used child labour or are going to help fill a landfill with it, unlike the the tat bought as stocking fillers from Poundland etc.

OP, if that is affordable as a treat present, something she wouldn't buy herself and she needs a diary for work, it is a lovely gift.

I am Xmas Envy

Shnickyshnackers · 21/12/2013 07:55

This thread is genius, I have laughed out loud. Brilliant!!! hahaha. The piano sidebar really got me going!!! :)

WaitMonkey · 21/12/2013 08:02

I have loved this thread. I would love the diary, well done op.

Pagwatch · 21/12/2013 08:02

Next time have your drink in the Royal Exchange and stumble into Bvlgari.
Much better.
Pitcher and piano is a ghastly place.

mrspremise · 21/12/2013 08:27

A Smythson diary is a wonderful gift. Your missus will see how much you spent on her lovely present everyday... I'm so envious! Wink

HorsePetal · 21/12/2013 08:54

OP I'm sure that your wife will be thrilled with her gift. Not just because of the extravagance but because of the circumstances in which it was purchased.

Yes you were wankered, but you acted on impulse for someone you love which is very sweet and very funny.

I think that you should print off this thread and tuck it inside the diary for her to read Christmas morning Smile

NearTheWindmill · 21/12/2013 08:55

They printed our wedding invitations. Lovely shop.

pigletmania · 21/12/2013 08:57

Now the jo Malone Candle at £280 Shock, it better be ade of unicorn arse hair. Now if you got me tat if iwasvtrying your misses, I would club you. I just treated myself toa £550 almost new genuine Christan Dior Granville bag, I thought that was bad. At least I will have years of usage out of it, bu a bloody candle Shock

Bluestocking · 21/12/2013 09:20

I have it on good authority that everything at Smythson is made by orphans, but they are humanely-reared Italian orphans at a Montessori orphanage, fed on an entirely organic diet.

Changebagsregeneratedgladrags · 21/12/2013 09:53

Oh no, I have asked DH for a diary Xmas Shock

AntoinetteCosway · 21/12/2013 09:59

I think she's a lucky woman! Smythson make beautiful products. If you can afford it, why not.

Fishfingersandwich9 · 21/12/2013 10:09

I think it is lovely and would be over the moon if someone bought me a gift like that. Who cares if it looks the same as cheaper ones to other people, she will treasure it each time she looks at it and that is what matters!

LEMoncehadacatcalledSANTA · 21/12/2013 10:27

The op didn't respond to my marriage proposal

LEMoncehadacatcalledSANTA · 21/12/2013 10:28

I just hope his wife has nice hand writing

spilttheteaagain · 21/12/2013 10:30
Shock I cannot begin to imagine what you coul possibly do to a diary to make it worth paying £180 for. Madness.

But it's your money, if you can afford it and it's what you want to spend on that's your affair.

The fact I think you are carzy for doing so is neither here nor there! Grin

Hope she likes it!

Elouie · 21/12/2013 10:30

I have loved this thread.

I would love a gift like this, yes it's extravagant but beautiful. And why not buy your wife beautiful things.

I do have a thing for all things stationery though Blush

formerbabe · 21/12/2013 10:34

I can't believe people use diaries anymore...I isn't it all done on a smart phone?!
