Got to say that it surprised me, Victoria Secrets models usually carry a bit more weight compared to the the emaciated girls we see doing the high fashion stuff.

She's so, so painfully thin. Her face is drawn and she looks older than her years.

When is the modelling world going to start using healthy looking girls who don't look like famine victims? This is not what people want to look at!

I was at a fashion show where the audience have murmured and then laughed at how emaciated one model was - and that's saying something.

I've been at one where men in the sudience have openly discussed going backstage "they'll have their tits out and everything," the 'girls' are treated very dismissively.

Modelling is a skin trade (to quote Duran, Duran) it has extremely unpleasant aspects, one is a brutal attitude towards teenagers' body shape. It's not exactly like being down the mines, there's worse jobs, but it's important to be critical of it as it is so influential.

BlingBang · 14/11/2013 19:49

I was just thinking of VB. in her Spice Girls days she looked amazing and much healthier. I don't think she is meant to be as thin as she is now and again it shows on her face.

lottieandmia · 14/11/2013 19:51

It has been well documented over the years that models do go to extreme lengths to look think including having tape worms inside them and using drugs like cocaine.

lottieandmia · 14/11/2013 19:51

thin* not think

princessalbert · 14/11/2013 19:52

I think she must be naturally small boned. Excellent muscle tone .

I would love a figure like hers - absolutely no chance - with my sturdy bones!!

FudgefaceMcZ · 14/11/2013 19:55

Why is it that if someone is underweight (as she is, on the BMI scale, as someone pointed out earlier having googled her height and weight), everyone pops up and says 'oh some people are naturally like that', but if someone is overweight (not even obese, just overweight), no one will admit that some people are naturally above the 'normal' BMI category? Just hypocrisy, or is it lack of statistical education?

LadyBeagleEyes · 14/11/2013 19:58

I wonder if we could ever have a 10 page thread slagging off the overweight/obese?
It's not going to happen though.

kerstina · 14/11/2013 20:03

I think she would look much more healthy if she did not exercise so much. YANBU I agree with you although did not agree with the other one linked last week I think she looked fine. This Victoria secrets one looks far more beautiful with her clothes on.

Fishandjam · 14/11/2013 20:03

@lessmissabs "she is definitely not by any stretch of the imagination, scrawny"

My imagination must be extremely stretchy then.

IceBeing · 14/11/2013 20:07

lady the obese don't make money from their looks....I think if you get paid on account of appearance you can expect comment on your appearance. If you don't then you don't....

IceBeing · 14/11/2013 20:10

fudge an excellent point there.....

Some people are naturally skinny and others are naturally plump. With exactly the same choices and lifestyles these two categories look very different....

Yet somehow slimness is used as a proxy for 'taking care of yourself and morality' while plumpness is used as a proxy for 'being lazy and greedy'.

You get the same thing for people who work well late in the day versus morning people.

In spite of the fact it is simple natural variation somehow the early risers have managed to gain the moral high ground....

Mimishimi · 14/11/2013 20:18

I clicked in the link expecting to see some emaciated waif who looked like she just got emancipated from a concentration camp. Instead of that, I saw a tall, slim, healthy looking young woman. What's the problem? Apart from her height and unusually gorgeous face, she looks like a typical Australian woman in her early twenties...

Fishandjam · 14/11/2013 20:20

Whoa mysiamese, that's never the same woman?

She looks bloody gorgeous in your link. And not scrawny - slim yes, toned yes, but not skinny. So she has lost weight, for sure.

And is it just me, or is she facially a dead ringer for Victoria Pendleton?

lottieandmia · 14/11/2013 20:20

I think the fact anyone could suppose this look is typical shows how much popular culture influences how people think. She's American isn't she - not Australian?

LessMissAbs · 14/11/2013 20:22

Fishandjam @lessmissabs "she is definitely not by any stretch of the imagination, scrawny" My imagination must be extremely stretchy then

Quite the opposite, I should imagine. Get yourself down to any athletics track, particularly in Sweden or The Netherlands or a similar country where tall slim people are the main type, and you will see plenty of healthy people who look like her.

Never been? What a surprise.

Alternatively, spend your life going round UK supermarkets or out of town shopping centres, and your imagination is going to need some stretching.

Fishandjam · 14/11/2013 20:23

Put dem claws away lessmissabs. You have no idea who I am or what sort of life I lead.

Fishandjam · 14/11/2013 20:25

But I guess it suits you to assume I'm a lardarse who does nothing but eat and shop, and bitch about other women? Hmm

Lizzylou · 14/11/2013 20:27

Lessmiss, no need to be so bloody bitchy.
And I sort of agree with you!

Mimishimi · 14/11/2013 20:28

Oh, she probably is American. What I meant that to mean is that she doesn't look dramatically different from what the average healthy young woman here in Australia would look like. That's pure, worked for muscle on her abs - you can't get that definition by starving yourself.

lottieandmia · 14/11/2013 20:29

LessMiss - if you think the model is naturally as thin as in the OP how do you explain the apparent very significant weight loss??

I notice nobody has answered that...

LessMissAbs · 14/11/2013 20:31

IceBeing lady the obese don't make money from their looks....I think if you get paid on account of appearance you can expect comment on your appearance. If you don't then you don't

Excellent point, and very true. From that I can say that

(a) Neither do I, and that's why I resent it being insinuated that a certain look is more attractive. Why would that concern me at all?

(b) theres not a lot of people out there who want to pay to look at obese people modelling - I certainly don't, I want to look at how the clothes are cut, how they hang and so on. And that's easier to judge on a certain shape of figure.

(c) Because I don't look like a typical British type, I have had comments all my life about what I look like, often quite negative ones. Not that theres anything wrong with the way I look, I simply don't look like the typical Brit.

unlucky83 · 14/11/2013 20:32

Not ok to make comments to people who are just living their life and I have know people who struggle to put on weight (I'm the opposite end of the scale so a bit porky). I think we have to accept and be happy with who we are as we are and not worry about other peoples opinions. I don't worry about what strangers say or think about me - only the opinions of people who know and care about me.

But I think it is ok to comment on her figure, as her job is to be looked at it. And VS at least must think her figure is 'ideal' or wouldn't be using her as a model.

According to Wiki she is a uk size 6.
I don't think it is a healthy body image to be showing to teenage girls - as has been acknowledge only a very small proportion of women are naturally so thin. (Also the lack of pubic hair I have issues with)

I think something does look not quite natural, something a little odd...struggled to put my finger on it but I'm actually wondering if she has had breast enlargement as (IME) it is unusual for someone to have such a generous chest and be so thin...

Lizzylou · 14/11/2013 20:36

I really take exception at the typical brit bollocks.
So you don't think the model looks emaciated or ill, neither do I.
Don't take the lazy option of proving your argument by insulting and generalising.

And yes, when I visited Australia, Sydney and Perth at least, the women were very toned and sporty. Possibly because they can be outside a lot! If I was going to be on a beach ebery weekend, and could exercise outside often I would be too!
