To think that this model looks awful and quite unwell?

www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-2507013/Victorias-Secret-Fashion-Show-afterparty-Sean-Avery-toasts-fiancee-Hilary-Rhodas-success.html

Got to say that it surprised me, Victoria Secrets models usually carry a bit more weight compared to the the emaciated girls we see doing the high fashion stuff.

She's so, so painfully thin. Her face is drawn and she looks older than her years.

When is the modelling world going to start using healthy looking girls who don't look like famine victims? This is not what people want to look at!

OP posts:

Lol at looking like a typical australian, in the western world australia is only beaten by the usa and new zealand in the overweight stakes.

limitedperiodonly · 14/11/2013 20:36

fishandjam tbh I think she's too lean and muscular, but that's my opinion based on my taste, rather than one about her health, which only she and possibly her doctor knows anything about.

I'd guess that most other women share my view, and since you seem so worried about it, I think most men do too, if their opinion, or anyone else's matters.

However, it's a look shared by all female distance runners, so I'm not going to knock them, and I'm very angry at OP for the cheap shot at all women who look like that under the guise of caring about 'role models' for teenage girls.

Slating skinny models usually gets brownie points, doesn't it? Yawn.

And by the way, the woman's name is Hilary Rhoda.

Lizzylou · 14/11/2013 20:38

Lottie, I have actually, a few times.
It is well documented that the VS models prepare very strictly for the runway. As anyone would if they were to be half naked going down a runway in front of the world's press. I don't think it is their everyday look.

specialsubject · 14/11/2013 20:40

that's not toned and sporty. That's ill-looking. Hopefully she isn't actually ill.

Heidi Klum is a model that looks good, slim and toned but not making you recoil in horror as these pictures do to me. It can be done.

abuse of good health is always frightening, whatever the cause.

lottieandmia · 14/11/2013 20:41

'It is well documented that the VS models prepare very strictly for the runway. As anyone would if they were to be half naked going down a runway in front of the world's press. I don't think it is their everyday look.'

Well that kind of illustrates my point then doesn't it - that this look is one which is not achieved because the person was born that way, generally.

Mimishimi · 14/11/2013 20:44

Hombre: Well, that's true but generally for middle-aged people and mostly men (think beer). Young women living by the coast really do look like that for the most part bar the ton of makeup. The model has lost weight but based on some of those earlier photos I would put her BMI at 25-26 and BF% at 30% - she looks healthier and more muscly to me now than then.

Fishandjam · 14/11/2013 20:44

I'm actually facepalming myself on this - it's not a topic I usually get involved in! I don't like super-slender women of any type being held up as the only exemplar of female beauty - if there was more variety in body shapes (skinny, muscular, rounded, whatever) put forward as beautiful then I think that would be great, but it doesn't actually bother me that much! Certainly not enough to take bitchy comments on AIBU about.

lottieandmia · 14/11/2013 20:49

'I would put her BMI at 25-26'

That's just ridiculous imo - so you are saying that in the earlier pictures she was bordering on overweight?? (healthy BMI is 20-25) I think this shows how media brainwashing can alter people's perceptions.

Lizzylou · 14/11/2013 20:54

25-26 BMI????? Bonkers!
Lottie, it proves everyones point I think. They work hard because they know they will be showing most of their body, from every angle.
It is just the same as when people lose weight for their holiday once a year.
I still think she doesn't look unhealthy.

Withknobson · 14/11/2013 20:55

Just because you aren't naturally tall and slim doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Some of us are long and lean, we have small builds but are tall. Even as I've got older and put weight on I'm still referred to as skinny. At 5ft 10, I now fit in size 12 clothes but people often wrongly assume I must be an 8. When you're so tall, it's hard not to look slender. I had a really hard time growing up, because of the constant speculation on my weight. The world is made of all shapes and sizes, get over it and stop judging.

HombreLobo · 14/11/2013 20:57

I have been to australia, to perth, melbourne, darwin and sydney and the majority of young women certainly do not look like this model!

Lizzylou · 14/11/2013 20:58

Fish, exactly.
I think the most repulsive thing about this whole thread, even more than the bitching about fat/skinny/matronly/natural/unnatural is the fact that this show even exists and is held in such high regard as the pinnacle of feminine beauty. It's just bollocks.

lottieandmia · 14/11/2013 20:59

Yes I agree Lizzylou - but it all comes back to the point that women are always under a lot of pressure not to look a pound heavier than they should (hence dieting for holiday). Whether she looks unhealthy or not is subjective but in the earlier pictures of her she didn't have all those lines around her mouth. And her legs are like twigs, literally. That is not a shape anyone is just born with.

Mimishimi · 14/11/2013 20:59

In some photos of when she was younger, yes. Healthy but on the borderline.

HombreLobo · 14/11/2013 21:00

oh and my brother has crohn's disease, he has a very defined six pack because he's very underweight, not because he works out.

Lizzylou · 14/11/2013 21:02

I am 5ft 9" and am of peasant build! with a matronly bust. Go me.
The fittest women I have ever seen, so much so I felt out of shape, have been in Perth and Sydney and Vancouver. Oh and Singapore. But there I was like Gulliver.

jellyboatsandpirates · 14/11/2013 21:03

I was all set to say YABU, as how are we to know what each individual is like health wise? She could be skinny and still healthy.
Going by the pictures on there, though, surely it cannot be healthy in any way. shape or form to have jutting out bones. She looks emaciated.

lottieandmia · 14/11/2013 21:04

Mimi - you are wrong, there is no way HR has ever bordered on being overweight. My BMI is 20 and I bet I have more body fat than she ever had in her life...

Fishandjam · 14/11/2013 21:11

lizzylou - amen to that, sister!

limitedperiodonly · 14/11/2013 21:18

I'm not sure many people have been bitchy, apart from the OP. And patronising too.

Some people like Hilary Rhoda's body. My personal opinion is that she does not have a body I'd envy and she would not make me want to buy bras and pants.

I think that's a bit of a fail on behalf of Victoria's Secret but presumably they know what they're doing.

Heidi Klum's body is similarly diffiicult to attain, either pre or post children.

I don't think images of either of them are seriously going to force anyone outside modelling to emulate them or slit our wrists.

AmberLeaf · 14/11/2013 21:44

Having looked at her older pics, IMO she is either ill [doubtful] or has an eating disorder.

She looked much better before.

howrudeforme · 14/11/2013 21:49

Her body does not look like a healthy woman's body to me. But that's the industry and what our daughters are being sold. Shame.

frumpet · 14/11/2013 21:56

In answer to your question OP , she is a model , it is her job to be a skinny malinker .
More importantly i really really want one of those feather jackets !

Sparrowlegs248 · 14/11/2013 21:58

Haven't read the 11 pages....

Its well documented that Victorias secrets models have a gruelling pre show regime. They don't eat and exercise for hours a day. Most of these girls DON'Tlook like this usually, and personally i don't understand why they have to for the show. They are all tall slim and much more attractive without the starving and excessive exercise.

Objection · 14/11/2013 22:31

I always think the normal healthy sized models look the most beautiful, not "plus size" models (though I imagine in the fashion industry they'd still be defined as such) but models who are toned, fit and have curves. That's what is sexy in a woman.

I find it so so strange that people think being thin is sexy (that is said with no intention to insult anyone that is thin).

Surely being healthy, happy and comfortable in your own skin is sexy.
And being happy with a normal diet and exercise regime.
