I expect I'll get some yanbus as I've seen people attempting to justify changing nappies in restaurants and libraries before now.

Nope. I would always find somewhere private. I think Mums who do this are just trying to make some stupid point! (don't know what though)

I had to do this in a dentist waiting room, there was no where for changing babies and the toilet floor wasn't big enough, where would you suggest I changed DS instead?

I once saw it done in front of a swing in the local park, to stop anyone using the swing while baby was being changed. And it was a cool day next to the North Sea in NE England

Meh. I can't get worked up about this. Perhaps not a poo filled nappy in a restaurant but otherwise it's fine by me...assuming no real changing facilities are readily accessible.

There are toilets with changing facilities in this park, BTW.

I saw someone change there child on a bouncy castle once, that was being bounced on at the time by lots of children. It was her only child, so she had no real reason to do that.

I would have taken my dc at that age to the loos or a baby changing- they have them at these places don't they? Its all oart of starting to do certain things in private, means nothing to baby at the time I know, but to you and as they get older, they learn to head for the loos, not pee in the street like I saw one child of about 6 do in the Main Street of naice market town, whilst his dm waited and chatted to a friend

I once changed a pooey nappy on a picnic table in the park. I think the toilets were closed for some reason and didn't think anything of it at the time.

I now look back on that with shame! !

The only thing I can think is to excuse myself is that:

a) I was ridiculously sleep deprived at the time and a little bit mad.
b) when you're changing umpteen nappies asday you get a bit desensitised to the fact that it's a bit icky.

If it was literally in the middle of the hall with people tripping up or having to go round yanbu.

If it was at the side of the hall I can't see the problem.

I would be more concerned about the possibility of people tripping over/treading on the baby, if the room was crowded. If the mother is kneeling on the floor with the baby, and everyone else is standing about or walking, they might not be clearly visible.

Well you said it's not on changing nappies in public, so I'm wondering what is the right thing to do if I'm in this situation again

I've changed my DDs on my lap before in waiting rooms; no ones ever batted an eyelid that I've noticed been too busy trying not to get shit up my hands

The thing is, changing a baby can take less than a couple of minutes. So in a big place like that, I don't know if I could be arsed to seek out a changing room.

I probably would do a quick change on the floor at the side of the room, so no-one tripped over us.

I always preferred to use a changing area if there was one. I certainly wouldn't have used the middle of a crowded exhibition hall. That could be a bit dangerous apart from anything else. If I had no choice then I would have found a quieter corner, away from the main area. where there was less risk of baby (or me) getting trodden on, or tripped over.

Well, I very nearly ended up changing a nappy in a corner at the NEC. It was fecking miles, pushing your way through people all the time, to get to the loos. Followed the signs to one set, to discover they had been changed to staff only. Then started treking to the next lot to find I was going to have to queue up and get an exit and re-entry stamp to use them. DD2 was screaming, I was going a bit dizzy (low blood pressure in pregnancy) and I very nearly gave up. So although no, you shouldn't, I can imagine how it happened.

Personally, I would have changed the baby on my lap in the loo. Or I might have gone outside and done it on the back seat of the car. Members of the public do not want or need to be treated to the sight and smell of your child's poo.
