to think that you should not lie your baby down on her changing mat and change her nappy on the floor in the middle of a crowded exhibition hall?

I expect I'll get some yanbus as I've seen people attempting to justify changing nappies in restaurants and libraries before now.

But, it's just really not on, is it?

I don't have an issue when there is no other choice available but when people do it out of laziness it really bugs me. We were travelling on a train recently with generous sized toilets with changing facilities but the woman sitting opposite us at the table decided she would just put her baby on the table to change her poo filled nappy which was quite gross.

There is also a mum at swimming lessons who changes her little girls nappy on the floor where we all stand to watch the children then proceeds to walk to the baby change room to dispose of the nappy so why she can't use that to actually change it in the first place is beyond me.

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 09/11/2013 16:52

There weren't facilities or else I would fucking used them....idiots. I asked!

getdownshep · 09/11/2013 16:54

Pobbles that is rank.

PrincessFlirtyPants · 09/11/2013 16:55

Lamu to clarify it was on a tube in rush hour, the train was busy. It was in Ealing Broadway where the district line starts so the father would have a number of other options. Very different to the situation you describe Smile

Mintyy · 09/11/2013 16:56

No, hooochy, I honestly can assure you I don't think that.

I just think I don't want to be exposed to the smell of shit.

It's not unreasonable.

Who is an idiot Pobbles?

Wouldn't bother me, so long as it isn't a food area or somewhere they might get trodden on/block a thoroughfare. Especially if it was only a wet nappy, not a pooey one. I'm sure I probably did it in public from time to time.

MrsBungleScare · 09/11/2013 17:03

I really don't think that would bother me.

trish5000 · 09/11/2013 17:03

Was it actually in the middle of the hall, or in a corner somewhere?

HyvaPaiva · 09/11/2013 17:08

Pobbles Shock that is disgusting. You said 'it's just a baby'. 'It' is actually faeces - even diarrhoea - where people will prepare food, eat, and drink. It coming from the body of a small, cute person does not make it hygienic or in any way acceptable. The germs you spread doing that is just disgusting.

charitygirl · 09/11/2013 17:08

Personally, I'd use the facilities but snort at 'I'd change the baby on my lap in the loo.' Yeah, I wouldn't unless I was keen to crack a cranium.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 09/11/2013 17:11

I tried once or twice to change nappies on my lap but couldn't do it at all, far too much kicking and arm waving, they would have ended up head first on the floor.

Lamu · 09/11/2013 17:11

Let me also clarify I changed Dd's bum on the floor entry way bit by the doors so not on the table.

I'm still a bit Confused at some views in here. You guys do know there's fecal matter, germs etc on the average door handle?! Slightly disgusted after watching an OCD programme the other week.

I've perfected a nappy change, even a shitty one and it takes less than a minute or so. I've changed nappies in the buggy in a pub without adequate facilities. I wasn't going to put dd down on a dirty pissy floor.

laza222 · 09/11/2013 17:11

Right in the middle of the exhibition centre - not OK. Over to one side - fine. That's my opinion.

RigglinJigglin · 09/11/2013 17:12

YANBU, it wouldn't bother me to be honest.

I think the waft of dirty nappy when out and about is far more off putting when it's not changed, especially if it lingers in a cafe / shop.

I was a bit Shock at someone changing a nappy on their car bonnet in a very busy tesco car park in the summer.

Mintyy · 09/11/2013 17:12

trish5000 - it was in the middle of the hall. That is what I put in my op. It wasn't in a corner. I walked round a stand and came face to face with a baby's arse being wiped. Where did the mum wash her hands afterwards, apart from anything else?

Trapper · 09/11/2013 17:14

Just changed mine, on a train back from Twickenham. No toilets - on my lap. Needs must - no one batted an eyelid. I would object in a restaurant, or when people are eating, but otherwise can't see the issue.

timidviper · 09/11/2013 17:17

I think we all become desensitised to things that happen a lot in our lives so e.g. a parent with little children thinks pooey nappies are nothing but a teenager swearing is awful. As the children grow the disgustingness of nappies dawns on them and the loud or swearing teenager is justified.

Once again this comes down to consideration for others and not thinking the world revolves around your own children

hettienne · 09/11/2013 17:19

Pobble - really, a coffee shop without a toilet at all?

Lamu · 09/11/2013 17:21

Riggling I'd be more concerned with little one burning themselves on a hot bonnet in the middle of summer. I have popped Dd in the boot to change her in those circumstances.

A lot of places don't have changing facilities and then it's not always easy to get to etc. I know if I've been out in the west end I can count on one hand the places that have facilities where you're not expected to be a patron. I'd always rather change a nappy than have a child in discomfort, crying etc.

Normalisavariantofcrazy · 09/11/2013 17:22

Has this been suggested?

Sit on a toilet (providing the cubicle is large enough) and change the baby on your lap. It's not hard.

hettienne · 09/11/2013 17:24

Why do people need "changing facilities"? Surely all that is needed is a toilet with either a floor or a toilet you can sit on?

Lamu · 09/11/2013 17:26

timid would you rather sit next to a screaming child with a dirty stinking nappy? I'm not advocating changing a nappy on a table in a cafe. Just saying that often there's not many options available.

trish5000 · 09/11/2013 17:27

ooh, it must have had facilities, so it wasnt necessary.
People have different standards though. I think I may have got a bit long in the tooth, and am not so surprised by anything anymore.

Lamu · 09/11/2013 17:28

I've been to many a toilet that I'd rather not sit down on let alone put my bag on the floor.
