to be concerned re. what is going on re. immigration and population growth?

So many non-English voices, especially East Europeans, but so many different nationalities en masse it seems have moved here in the last 10-20 years - completely unprecedented historically. And in an already very over-crowded island.

Today I read Labour MP Frank Field say that the population increase due to immigration by 2031, i.e. less than 20 years, will be approximately 10 million and will require building something like seven new Birminghams! Or another London! Based on latest predictions in the papers today anyway.

Did Blair and Mandelson envisage this when they signed up for European Community rules on immigration and refugees? Or did they cynically not care because it meant cheap labour, cheap votes, increased profits (via membership of the European Community).

Did the architects of this policy not consider how it would affect housing, jobs and education and the resulting massive investment needed there, and the over-crowded population we have already.

I believe we have never been consulted or told anything honestly about what the consequences of EC membership was immigration-wise, if indeed there was ever any plan (doesn't seem to be, just a kind of opportunistic carpetbaggers philosophy approach of selling England by the pound).

I feel deceived and hoodwinked really. But are there any more positive thoughts on this? I find it v. depressing.

"I cant get a council place so why should the ones who were not born here have one."

Ah now we get to the brunt of it. "I WANT, and I'm going to blame someone I don't like for it - ah, those forriners, there'll do!"

Your ability to get a council house has zero to do with immigration.

QuintesKabooom · 07/11/2013 00:24

"Britain needs millions more immigrants to reduce strain of ageing population" The Telegraph

Mylovelyboy · 07/11/2013 00:24

Jesus Christ. You lot really are something else. Do you live in a bubble.

Mylovelyboy · 07/11/2013 00:26

Millions more immigrants. Where are they going to go exactly.

Misspixietrix · 07/11/2013 00:27

feelinggood You mentioned parliament in your 00:05 post. That is why I am pointing it out. Didn't accuse YOU of saying those things I'm simply pointing out thay those things have Been said by other posters. There's a huge difference between being able to express your opinion on Immigration and then saying things like the OP and a few others have said. I.e the nicking our benefits and everything else that was said.

Oh, and for the love of GOD will you learn to spell fucking properly?

It's got a c in it. Like cunt

Weegiemum · 07/11/2013 00:28

If you went to my dc's school, you'd hear everyone speaking "forrin". Yes - Scottish Gaelic.

This has ended up not only scarily xenophobic but also incredibly Anglo-centric. English does not equal British.

Some of my best friends are ex Congolese asylum seekers. They've fitted into Scotland (and into jobs here) just fine.

feelingood · 07/11/2013 00:28

quintes this is true BUT my point is, as I have stated, get the resources in place to cope with the increase, not doing things 'arse over tit' to be blunt.

Misspixietrix · 07/11/2013 00:29

No I don't live in la la land. Neither do the other 98% of Posters that disagree with you and the OP. Oh and I live in an Inner City too. Not swathes of Immigrants at all.

MistressDeeCee · 07/11/2013 00:29

I'm not a racist just because I'm concerned . Anyone insinuating I am a racist just makes me feel furious!

This from the OP only 3 posts in, when NOBODY had made any accusation or even mentioned race or racism. Neat way of setting the required tone when things sound a bit too reasonable...

These weekly Mumsnet Im Not Racist But posts you can almost set your clock by these days...gotta love 'em Grin

I'm from a non-English country which is fairly crowded with non-nationals. As long as they're law-abiding I couldn't care less, as I'm not of the mind wages and services would massively improve if immigrants suddenly left. Just like in the UK,they weren't brilliant before; they'd already been decimated by self-serving governments so, what odds really.

PatriciaHolm · 07/11/2013 00:30

To quote an academic paper immigration and social housing -

"The result is that a relatively small proportion of new lettings made by social landlords are to new immigrants and migrant workers, despite evidence that many new immigrants and migrant workers are in extreme housing need.
Moral panics have a preference for the simple over the complex and a contempt for information and evidence. "

In other words; ignorant people blame immigrants for all ills because they don't have the intellectual capacity to understand the actual facts.

taffleee · 07/11/2013 00:30

I don't even need to post on here lol!! EDL!

feelingood · 07/11/2013 00:30

pixie I never said thos things so do not relate them to my arguments thank you.

PatriciaHolm · 07/11/2013 00:31

"Jesus Christ. You lot really are something else. Do you live in a bubble."

Given that 98% people on this thread are in it, it's a bloody big bubble!

JaquelineHyde · 07/11/2013 00:32

lovelyboy you really are rather ridiculous and your entitled attitude is just embarrassing.

The reason you do not have a council property is because you do not fulfil the criteria set by your local authority or housing association.

This has fuck all to do with immigrants, unless of course you are claiming that the staff who set the criteria are in fact immigrants that have stolen our jobs and set the criteria to favour their fellow immigrants!

Misspixietrix · 07/11/2013 00:33

feelinggood I never said you did!! Read my post again! You mentioned parliament in which I made an example of that is why Parliament can say it because they know how to say it and don't say things like the OP said. I categorically stated in my last post "Like the OP and others I.e lovely have said!".

taffleee · 07/11/2013 00:34

I think we should close borders to be honest, until people realise this is a small island, called 'Britain' - and we should be proud of that!!!

QuintesKabooom · 07/11/2013 00:35

I think it is important to not mix the concern for the general situation in the country, migrants or no migrants, with racism.

The situation is extremely complex.

VeryStressedMum · 07/11/2013 00:35

So mylovelyboy how many foreigners are there here specifically draining resources.

feelingood · 07/11/2013 00:36

weegie a good point re angle-centric.

The UK is quite complex in how the people who live in it relate to a national identity.

You can live in the UK and identify with a number of different nationalities under the umberella of 'British'. It is more complex because of diversity of nationalities as a reslt of immigration, hitorical and current. This is interwined with political and cultural dimenssion rooted in the 'British Empire' and its one time dominance. But not forgetting where that all started anyway....
