So many non-English voices, especially East Europeans, but so many different nationalities en masse it seems have moved here in the last 10-20 years - completely unprecedented historically. And in an already very over-crowded island.

Today I read Labour MP Frank Field say that the population increase due to immigration by 2031, i.e. less than 20 years, will be approximately 10 million and will require building something like seven new Birminghams! Or another London! Based on latest predictions in the papers today anyway.

Did Blair and Mandelson envisage this when they signed up for European Community rules on immigration and refugees? Or did they cynically not care because it meant cheap labour, cheap votes, increased profits (via membership of the European Community).

Did the architects of this policy not consider how it would affect housing, jobs and education and the resulting massive investment needed there, and the over-crowded population we have already.

I believe we have never been consulted or told anything honestly about what the consequences of EC membership was immigration-wise, if indeed there was ever any plan (doesn't seem to be, just a kind of opportunistic carpetbaggers philosophy approach of selling England by the pound).

I feel deceived and hoodwinked really. But are there any more positive thoughts on this? I find it v. depressing.

Ah, feck it, I think I'll just go back to posting Father Ted quotes...

I'm not very good at judging crowds now Ted, but I'd say there's AT LEAST 17 million of them immigrants out there!

(is this where they're getting their figures from, d'you think? :o)

Ahhh, rubbish, people should just stop the political jargon and get down to basics - no one in this country is racist, we should stop being worried about the term - this is a small island, being british should be a proud term!!!

Lovecat · 07/11/2013 00:40

The OP said:
completely unprecedented historically
In response TondelayoSchwarzkopf said:
If you've never read any history.

Actually the OP is perfectly correct. It is unprecedented in British or European history to have a movement of so many people into any country. William the conquerer turned with about ten thousand troops. Most went back to France.

In 2012 Two Hundred and Sixteen Thousand people migrated to Britain and it was Two Hundred and Fifty Two Thousand the year before (figures from the BBC). So sixpence short of half a million people. Many from the EU and many from Asia - the commonwealth heritage is often forgotten in this debate. The largest single group of immigrants to Britain every year is not from Poland but from India.

Yes, people die, yes, the birth rate is the biggest cause of population growth but when you scratch the surface of the figures you find that first and second generation Asian immigrant families averagely have 4.2 children whereas indigenous white population families have 1.8 children. So... while it's true that the birthrate among "British" mothers is the main cause of population increase it is also true that the percentage of the population who are indigenous white people is decreasing exponentially.
A figure often quoted is that less than 10% of the population of Britain is non-white. What the figure hides is that almost 40% of the under 18 population of Britain is non-white. Look at any urban state school. Thats the future of Britain.

The "Black" (Black British / Afro Caribbean or African) population of Britain is stable and has remained stable for about thirty years. The "Asian" (predominantly Indian) population of Britain is growing at a rate which will have a fundamental impact on the nation.

To talk about race is difficult in Britain - to talk about culture is even harder. The "honest and open" debate can't ever be had because everything that needs to be said cannot be said. White people in Britain don't hate, are not scared of or threatened by non-white people. But, if a population of an island nation is to change from 98% white to 60% non-white without a war, invasion or catastrophic natural disaster in only 60 years I think the OP has a point when they say

"completely unprecedented historically".

Things change - in fact the only thing you can guarantee in life IS change but this is a change that could have and should have (and could still) be managed much, much better.

It will be odd, I think, when in twenty five years time the population of Holland is 80% white and the population of Britain is 70% non-white.

mylovely Have you been to towers lol x

What on earth are you wibbling on about, Mylovelyboy? Saying something four times doesn't make it make any more sense!

(PS - take a little look at Lovecat's picture on her profile. notice anything?)

PMSL at the fact that lovely lives in Ingatestone, of all places! I mean, you're not exactly overrun, are you?! Grin

I've lived in various parts of the country, and am currently in one of the most diverse areas. I love the fact that my dd goes to school with such a diverse mix of kids, and I enjoy learning about the different cultures of my neighbours. I haven't seen anywhere that is full. Least of all ingatestone!

If it makes you feel better, lovely, your taxes definitely aren't paying for any immigrants or their imaginary benefits. If you can't afford decent accommodation for you and your son, you won't be a net contributor anyway, and it's far more likely that the immigrants are subsidising you.

As for all the free handouts for immigrants, can somebody tell me where they get given out as DH hasn't claimed his yet? Will he still be entitled to free sweets after 10 years in the country? Can I have some too because I emigrated and then came back?!

Weegiemum · 07/11/2013 00:50

There are people born here who don't regard themselves as British.

I spent 5 years in Kent as a child, but regard myself as thoroughly Scottish, not British, and certainly not English. My dh is from Northern Ireland (and has an immigrant father) - he really struggles to define himself as he grew up a NI Protestant (therefore "British") but feels more Irish and his dad is German.

Recently asked our children - all feel Scottish and don't really know what "British" is. But as I've said they're all Gaelic speakers, very proud of the language and culture.

Mylovelyboy · 07/11/2013 00:51

Have walked through Tower Hamlets yes. Didnt know where the fuck I was. Thought i had been transported somewhere else.
