to think there's a lot of patronizing snobbery here with regards the netmums site.

it's as posters on mumsnet are somehow superior to anyone who posts on netmums...

I mean, whats that all about?

i've been looking at Nm's because of this thread and trying to be unbiased but TBh it looks like there isn't that much traffic over there, no where near as much discussion or replies compared to Mnet. Maybe I wasn't looking at the more popular forums. It seems really vague with not a lot going on or serious debate or knowledgable facts.

All the best JustinBsMum, you are one brave lady Wink

MrsBucketxx · 11/10/2013 11:51

I have tried both and I find you can talk about things that are a bit more informed, without offending someone.

Plus I found it a mare to join and navigate around.

sheridand · 11/10/2013 13:43

Their health support board in a particular area helped me enormously and kept me sane for many years. I avoided the argument threads, as I do here, but I found it just as useful in terms of response to real issues. There's snobbery in both, inverse or otherwise. It's just like being in a pub in either place, only being able to hear everyone blahing on at once. You just have to tune out what offends you on either site.

One thing I do appreciate "over there" is the more forgiving attitude to writing style and punctuation. It can get very petty over this side, and sometimes skews a whole debate, as if people who mis-type or spell incorrectly can't have an opinion.

Couldn't resist having a look at Nethuns and I agree with what's been said here about us, generally speaking, being more intelligent and more opinionated. Not saying MN is perfect - far from it - but this website is definitely superior and I can certainly understand why MN is mentioned more in the media than NM.

The layout is awful, too...so garish and allows for tacky avatars. And all those xxxxxxx's...yuck.

JustinBsMum · 12/10/2013 19:14

Didn't Mumsnet takeover / merge with Netmums?

So naturally if you are running two different websites aiming at a certain section of society you will garner most followers if you spread your remit to cover as many different types of people as possible. Which is what it seems to do, so being nicey, nicey on netmums attracts a different set than the more strident view holders on mumsnet. Upshot - you corner the whole market!!

Ridersofthestorm · 12/10/2013 19:29

That's funny, there is a thread on netmums now asking why is mumsnet so horrible? And something about us being a nest of vipers haha Smile

I actually don't use net-mums but this thread inspired me to take a peek.

I thought it looked alright tbh, I like the fact they have a photo of the user when they post. I sometimes wonder what people and their dc's look like on here.

crazynanna · 12/10/2013 19:34

They banned me the twats

For personal attacks AKA defending vulnerable
People, like one self confessed and quite clearly mentally unwell woman who the pack ripped to shreds

They even made me change my signature. Cunts

JustinBsMum · 12/10/2013 19:42

Not sure if the merger happened. Netmums was bought out by Aufeminin a French company. Netmums is described on Wiki as having 1.5 million visitors to Mumsnet's 4.5.

Theunincredibles · 12/10/2013 20:02

Crazynana.. You were fab! MrsDV remember you and Scarlet.
I don't post much on NM any more, most the good people have left or been banned and ended up here. You can't have a good debate over there anymore. People are giving out dangerous advice to vulnerable new mums under the guise that 'mum knows best' and if you dare say that isn't the case you end up getting flamed.

I have looked at NM once or twice and it just didn't appeal.

Deep down inside I think I am snobby about it too Blush

Would love to know the user demographics.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 12/10/2013 20:30

Of both sites, I mean. Just out of interest - it might be eye-opening.

echt · 12/10/2013 21:01

I've not looked at it for years, and the preposition is telling, so I've just been for a dekko.

All that sugary colour is too much for me.

Their categories are unhelpful too, for instance they lump finance, IT, emigrating and days out in Homes and Gardens. Gardens is then lumped in with animals.I post on MN's Gardening thread quite a lot, so would not like to have to wade through a load of sqeeeee posts about kittens in order to find out about lawns.

I think what NetMums (bless their cotton socks) are trying to do is put all their info on one page so their potential or actual audience can find see right away what there is. NM patronise their readers by assuming they can't do a bit of read and click to find exactly what they want.

I like the stripped-down appearance of MN, the way the topics are not blurred so you can get advice/ideas from those who know something. I wouldn't fancy my chances of getting a sensible response on NetMums posting about plumbing, but know that if I do so in Homes, DIY on MN, the peerless PigletJohn will come along and put me right.

I like the robust debate on MN, the feel that this is a forum for adults.

Netmums undoubtedly has a troll from MN on at the moment: someone has posted saying what they like to eat when at Greggs. Goady or what?:o

The "huns" are gagworthy, and yes, I do look down on the site.

Mitchey · 13/08/2014 16:04

I used to quite like the WYOO board of Babycentre (What's Your Opinion On...?) as it enabled people to gather opinions without descending into some of the hostile behaviour that can sometimes be seen on AIBU.

REALLY?! That place is full of leftie benefit claimants who literally jump on you and attack you with the first whiff of you not having the same idealogy. I left there after two of the 'ring leaders' tracked me down in RL, emailed my employer at the time with what they believed to be 'my incorrect views' and then sent me very sinister messages on FB telling me to abort my child and that they were going to come round and kick my head in - 7 days before I was induced. I had 3 police officers in my house going through all the screen shots and abusive message they'd sent me. The admin there did NOTHING. I got banned and they're still going strong . . .

Yes, I'm trawling old threads for amusements!
