to think Halal meat is cruel?

Bought a very nice panini today (bacon, brie and cranberry) from the local sandwich shop.

I didn't realise at the time that all the meat in that shop is Halal, which I am strongly opposed to.

Here is Wiki's description of Halal

^"Specifically, the slaughter must be performed by a Muslim, who must precede the slaughter by invoking the name of Allah, most commonly by saying "Bismillah" ("In the name of Allah") and then three times "Allahu akbar" (God is the greatest). Then, the animal must be slaughtered with a sharp knife by cutting the throat, windpipe and the blood vessels in the neck (while the animal is conscious), causing the animal’s death without cutting the spinal cord. Lastly, the blood from the veins must be drained."

AIBU to think this seems unnecessarily cruel?

(I realise the UK meat industry is far from perfect but this seems particularly nasty)

I wondered about the taser effect too. Immobile and appearing unconscious but not.

Bazoo23 · 06/10/2013 21:19

Islamaphobia might be the funniest term Ive ever heard. I disagree with some of their practices but I certainly dont have a phobia!
I disagree with non parents using parent and child parking spaces too , what sort of PHOBIA could that be??
Just too funny.

Bazoo23 · 06/10/2013 21:27

If you would move your perspective from the far left you would see I've said nothing racist.
Just that in my opinion halal meat is cruel.
God how do I sleep at night?!
MN really is an OTT PC place, its quite sad.
All competing to be the most "cool laid back and liberal". Strange.

Thants · 06/10/2013 21:29

Your arguing the etymology which really is irrelevant. You know exactly what it means. It means a bigotry towards Muslims. Come on now.

I find it easy peasy being PC because I'm not racist. I don't even have to think about it.
It benefits us all not to be bigoted. It benefits nobody to be bigoted.

I don't think not being a racist is solely down to being a 'cool laid back liberal' Hmm

And that is exactly the argument that a poster under a different name used last week.

This is why I don't eat meat

Cosmos123 · 06/10/2013 21:42

It is clear that Banzoo has issues from her postings on this thread.

Apparently wanting to 'scream' because we were being 'cool and liberal' in debating that halal meat was no more cruel than other meat sold??

When it was pointed out that kosher meat has similar practices and asked if she condemned this she could not.

Is it becase it is more "acceptable" to bash muslims than Jews?

I see both practices the same. If I were a vegetarian it would all be cruel and not specifically a practice carried out by one particular religious group.

Both religions Shimon Cohen from shechita Uk and Roksana Shai from behalal.org insist that cutting an individual's throat in a single swipe is less cruel than stunning it first by driving a bolt into its skull, gassing it or electrocuting it.

You have a choice to eat it. It is available for those individuals who wish to observe their religious practices. Live with it and let go of your bitter twisted and racist viewpoints.

Crescentmoon has hit the nail on the head

YouTheCat · 06/10/2013 21:44

Well said, Cosmos.

nennypops · 06/10/2013 21:57

I always get the impression that the bigots somehow feel they will catch Islam if they eat halal meat. However, it never seems to bother them too much when they patronise Indian restaurants.

Ponyo73 · 06/10/2013 22:11

After this thread, I am definitely considering being vegetarian. what's not to like in couscous. Mentally and physically feeling disgusted with all this being hung up and slashed! Ooo the blood letting! keep thinking one day a higher intelligent alien life will swoop down and kebab us all! Just look at a cow's big, old eyes if you pass them, then you won't perhaps want a slice unless you know she went quietly into that good night. HO hum.

Lol! Nenny, i think those bigots are hoping that the halal-ness of the curry will be cancelled out by the accompanying beverage of wine/beer that they are having and therefore they will be immune to catching islam. Its the muzlamics you gotta watch out for! Smile

YouTheCat · 06/10/2013 22:22

All that trying to convert people to Aslan. Grin

Ponyo73 · 06/10/2013 22:31

Bazoo23, just to say that you are not going mad, you are not racist and you have every right to state your opinion here on this forum. It certainly seems that you have to watch what your opinions here or you are labelled, racist, right-wing, or worst of all a daily mail whore! Getting a bit tired of this site as you can' t say I love Britain and being a citizen and being proud, without an anti-Islamist threat thrown in.

Yeah nationalism always a good shout...
Bazoo didn't say she loves her country she said she is against halal and the reasons given made no sense.
I don't love my country I like some bits of it and hate others as with all things, it's good to have balance Grin

ok well halal slaughter is nearly aligned to 100% pre stunned

It's currently at 88 per cent pre-stunned. So why can't it be 100 per cent - how hard would that be? Why is there a religious opt-out allowing animals not to be pre-stunned, if it's not actually a religious requirement?

Want2bSupermum · 06/10/2013 22:42

Im Jewish and I don't eat Kosher meat because I don't agree with the slaughter technique (which is the same as halal). It is a personal choice. To others they don't object or don't know the difference. I think these rules had a purpose in the hot middle east thousands of years ago but in the modern world, I don't see the benefit.

I married a man who sells pork for a living. He has been asked quite a few times if they have kosher bacon. What they are normally asking for is either beef or turkey bacon.

Coupon · 06/10/2013 22:42

i.e. it's not a religious requirement to avoid pre-stunning
