to think Halal meat is cruel?

IAmMiranda · 04/10/2013 13:36

Bought a very nice panini today (bacon, brie and cranberry) from the local sandwich shop.

I didn't realise at the time that all the meat in that shop is Halal, which I am strongly opposed to.

Here is Wiki's description of Halal

^"Specifically, the slaughter must be performed by a Muslim, who must precede the slaughter by invoking the name of Allah, most commonly by saying "Bismillah" ("In the name of Allah") and then three times "Allahu akbar" (God is the greatest). Then, the animal must be slaughtered with a sharp knife by cutting the throat, windpipe and the blood vessels in the neck (while the animal is conscious), causing the animal’s death without cutting the spinal cord. Lastly, the blood from the veins must be drained."

AIBU to think this seems unnecessarily cruel?

(I realise the UK meat industry is far from perfect but this seems particularly nasty)

Yes dear

Thants · 06/10/2013 17:12

Bazoo why is it horrific? As in more horrific that any other meat? Do you have a reason?

WahIzzit · 06/10/2013 17:25

Bazoo23 if the Muslim prayer during the slaughter process is all meaningless mumbo jumbo to you, then I really cant grasp why you have an issue with it? To Muslims the prayer is significant hence the reason they cannot consume non-halal meat. To non-muslims it has no significance therefore many of the ones I know couldn't care less if it is halal.

We know that majority of the halal meat out there is stunned, so the likelihood of coming across non-stunned is extremely low (usually states HMC certified or whatever but even then is hardly genuinely non-stunned). Hard to come by even for Muslims tbh. Your dislike towards halal meat is probably something more personal because neither methods are more cruel than the other.

YouTheCat · 06/10/2013 17:36

I don't know why you are even bothered, Bazoo, as you've said you're a veggie. Surely all meat is inhumane to your eyes? If you just have an issue with Halal because it has been blessed then that's a bit of a shitty attitude.

picniclady · 06/10/2013 18:14

Yanbu. It is very cruel.

Thants · 06/10/2013 18:34

How is it cruel picniclady?

Bazoo23 · 06/10/2013 19:41

God Thants let people have a different opinion than you ffs!

Bazoo23 · 06/10/2013 19:44

There are humane ways to destroy an animal. Being tied up by its legs, left to swing upside down while a chant is performed, having its throat slit and being left to bleed out is horrendous it really is.
Religion cannot excuse cruelty

Opalite · 06/10/2013 20:24

I'm not sure that there is any humane way to destroy an animal
I agree that what you mentioned is extremely cruel

LittleTulip · 06/10/2013 20:32

Ey up only just seen this thread.

The 'halal bacon' OP mentions is likely to be halal turkey rashers. They look and taste just like bacon, and are excellent in a carbonara Smile

Bazoo you seem to gave misunderstood the point of this thread. It is about debate. So no I won't just let people have a different opinion to me. I will debate it as other posters are so that we can further understand each other's pov. If that bothers you then don't post your reactionary opinion that is based not on facts but on hatred of religion, cos if you do that people are going to disagree!
If you would like to continue with reasoned debate then maybe show us some evidence for your claim that halal is a crueler way of killing animals?

kimberlina · 06/10/2013 20:39

I also think halal meat is cruel and would try to avoid it.

I have been in a normal abattoir and whilst it is disturbing and not pleasant, the animals are stunned and unconscious before they have their throats cut.

I cannot see why in this day and age it is acceptable to cut an animals throat fully conscious. I have nothing with the halal meat being blessed and then stunned and then slaughtered. But missing the stun should not be allowed in the uk

DiamondMask · 06/10/2013 20:40

I'm not sure there is an uncruel way. Being herded into lorries, crowded into the waiting pen where they can smell the blood. Many slip and hurt themselves. Then stunned - is electrocution into unconciousness painful? - hung upside by one leg then having their throats slit and bleeding out. Many regain consciousness as blood rushes to the head. Chickens get it worse. Lots raise their heads and miss the stunning water and have their throats slit by a machine while conscious and if they arent of standard size the blade cuts them in the chest. That's why abbatoirs have a human on that line to dispatch the ones still alive after the blades.
All abbatoirs are vile for the larger animals especially or did people think there was a humane injection and lullabies?

Bazoo23 · 06/10/2013 20:44

Im so bored of this topic now. In my OPINION halal meat is cruel. Okay?

=) night!

southernbelle79 · 06/10/2013 20:45

halal is the best way to slaughter an animal as the the animal feels far less pain then the mainstream way of stunning where they suffer a long painful death. also halal meat is a lot cleaner and I know of lots of people who are not muslim but go to halal butcher's to buy their meat for this very reason

It would be less cruel to slaughter them on the farm, leading them away one by one and slitting their throats.

There used to be many more (and smaller local) abattoirs and slaughters on farms IIRC but I guess for quality assurance (and profit) reasons that changed to a large production line approach involving transporting them long distances etc.

Stunning a cow involves a captive bolt gun being fired into the brain so the animal is unconscious. It is then shackled and throat cut so feels nothing.

Stunning a pig involves callipers being applied to their head and electrocuting them. Again unconscious.

Chickens are hung up side down by their feet fully conscious and then the conveyor belt passes through an electrified water bath which renders them unconscious. IMO the chickens have it worst as they can lift their heads and miss the stunning process

kimberlina · 06/10/2013 20:52

The stunts not painful. Many studies have shown that the brain is unconscious before the painful stimulus reaches the brain.

Thants · 06/10/2013 21:02

That's its Bazoo don't let your OPINION be changed at all by silly little things like facts.
It is clear from your input on this thread that your opinion is formed from islamaphobia.
