to think Halal meat is cruel?

Bought a very nice panini today (bacon, brie and cranberry) from the local sandwich shop.

I didn't realise at the time that all the meat in that shop is Halal, which I am strongly opposed to.

Here is Wiki's description of Halal

^"Specifically, the slaughter must be performed by a Muslim, who must precede the slaughter by invoking the name of Allah, most commonly by saying "Bismillah" ("In the name of Allah") and then three times "Allahu akbar" (God is the greatest). Then, the animal must be slaughtered with a sharp knife by cutting the throat, windpipe and the blood vessels in the neck (while the animal is conscious), causing the animal’s death without cutting the spinal cord. Lastly, the blood from the veins must be drained."

AIBU to think this seems unnecessarily cruel?

(I realise the UK meat industry is far from perfect but this seems particularly nasty)

Sorry I probably being daft here, but how can you have halal pork?

Theodorakiss · 04/10/2013 13:52

Pork is far more haram than non halal. Unless it was beef bacon I simply don't believe it. I live in the Middle East and am vegetarian but I wouldn't eat meat slaughtered Halal here nor factory farmed British animals who get their heads kicked in while in the UK abattoirs by toothless cruel tossers. Here the cruelty is part culture part ignorance. There is is just cruel.

IAmMiranda · 04/10/2013 13:53

I admit, the halal bacon was weird but when I went to the shop to check the lady said quite catergorically that "ALL the meat is halal".

Confused

I have seen chickens being slaughtered in a small humble village in my parent's native country. They were treated very well before and during. Cant say it put me off but i'd rather I hadn't seen it. I think the vast majority of people would rather not see what goes on in an abattoir as it isnt pleasant viewing, whether its halal meat or non-halal.

onedogandababy · 04/10/2013 13:54

Not when your form of rendering an animal unconscious is by shooting a metal bolt into the head, dunking them in electrolised water or holding paddles to a head to pass an electric current, sometimes this doesn't work either.

Tbh, I think slitting the throat is a very quick way to ensure loss of consciousness, the fact that the blood is left to drain is irrelevant (from a cruelty perspective).

The act of killing any animal for food involves cruelty & moral issues no matter how it's done. My focus is on buying high welfare meat, ensuring that the life of said animal had been worth living.

If you buy 3 chickens for a tenner, your moral highground is shakey...

SabrinaMulhollandJjones · 04/10/2013 13:56

yanbu. It's all cruel, but halal unnecessarily so.

Oh gosh, this thread hasn't been done before.

  1. You forgot Kosher meat, or do you only care when it's the Muslims doing it?
  2. Something like 80% of Halal meat is stunned prior to slaughtering.
  3. Trying doing some 'research' that does't include copy and pasting from Wikipedia.

ANormalOne · 04/10/2013 13:59

Here you go, 88% of animals. It literally took me a minute to find this, not that hard is it? www.rspca.org.uk/ImageLocator/LocateAsset?asset=document&assetId=1232719611043&mode=prd

SoftSheen · 04/10/2013 14:01

Again... You CAN get Halal 'bacon', it is made of chicken, turkey or beef...

I have also seen Halal pepperoni!

i have never seen it called bacon

i have had beef halal salami and cured meat that is smoky and tastes a little like bacon can not remember the name

SoftSheen · 04/10/2013 14:04

No, it's not proper bacon, and I doubt it tastes much like bacon (never tasted it) but it is labelled as 'Halal bacon'- perhaps this is what the OP was eating.

Sindarella · 04/10/2013 14:04

Arn't there laws that state the animal has to have been stunned first? A factory where i live got shut down & people arrested for not stunning the animals before slaughter. It was a halal factory.

LuisSuarezTeeth · 04/10/2013 14:06

Why would a shop selling halal meat have bacon on the premises? Can't have been pork bacon.

The stuff I have seen has been labelled as either 'Halal turkey bacon' or 'Halal beef bacon' but I don't expect the OP would have seen the packet, since the bacon (or whatever it was!) was in her sandwich.

Dawndonnaagain · 04/10/2013 14:12

Gosh they crawl out of the woodwork some months, don't they. Hmm
This was done last week, surely?

Who is crawling out of the woodwork? I don't understand? This thread is a bit potty.

DoItTooJulia · 04/10/2013 14:16

Nope, you can't. And if they have/are they can be prosecuted.

GoshAnneGorilla · 04/10/2013 14:16

I can see it now...

AIBU to think it's wrong to sell bacon that isn't pig bacon.

Btw this thread is rather even tempered thus far. In other corners of MN it was claimed that halal meat was being foisted on people and this was "Muslims flouting our laws" and inciting the anger of British (British being incompatible with being Muslim apparently) people. Hmm
