to think Halal meat is cruel?

IAmMiranda · 04/10/2013 13:36

Bought a very nice panini today (bacon, brie and cranberry) from the local sandwich shop.

I didn't realise at the time that all the meat in that shop is Halal, which I am strongly opposed to.

Here is Wiki's description of Halal

^"Specifically, the slaughter must be performed by a Muslim, who must precede the slaughter by invoking the name of Allah, most commonly by saying "Bismillah" ("In the name of Allah") and then three times "Allahu akbar" (God is the greatest). Then, the animal must be slaughtered with a sharp knife by cutting the throat, windpipe and the blood vessels in the neck (while the animal is conscious), causing the animal’s death without cutting the spinal cord. Lastly, the blood from the veins must be drained."

AIBU to think this seems unnecessarily cruel?

(I realise the UK meat industry is far from perfect but this seems particularly nasty)

HomeHelp thank you for clarifying as no, it wasn't apparent that you were only referring to this thread. But even so, as I have commented on this thread myself, I for one strongly refute any suggestion that I'm only interested in this one specific issue. I'm just as much against battery farming, long-distance livestock transport and animals in circuses, for example.

And you, among many others, have decided that stunning plus conventional slaughter is more humane than shechita.

I stand by this, along with the RSPCA and many others. The RSPCA are purely concerned with animal wellbeing, regardless of any connection to religion. They have been campaigning for some time for all animals to be pre-stunned before slaughter.

From the earlier RSPCA document:

"Although at the moment no animals slaughtered by the Shechita method in Great Britain are stunned before slaughter, the FSA survey did indicate that 10% of cattle and calves slaughtered by the Shechita method in Great Britain received a post-cut stun".

Lazyjaney · 05/10/2013 12:45

I think I'd like Halal bacon on a bagel please..... (there, that should offend all the offendeds)

DiamondMask · 05/10/2013 13:16

I hope you're out their protesting against shooting OP, and ferreting and other killing methods. You ever seen wounded pheasants flapping on the ground after the ground after they've been shot?
Meat is cruel. Death is cruel. Tiny cages are cruel. Taking calves away from cows is cruel.
But we want meat and milk and eggs so we all pretend it's not happening and focus on one thing.

ARoundSoundLikeGround · 05/10/2013 15:58

JINSEI - the OP has clearly said twice that the bacon was advertised as Halal. Other posters Have also said you can get Halal bacon (albeit not pork)

Not everybody has an ulterior motive ffs. No one said anything about religion until people got defensive about it.

ARoundSoundLikeGround · 05/10/2013 16:01

"Killing animals for food is cruel"

Well fuck me, that tars a huge proportion of the animal kingdom with the same brush doesn't it?

Those damn lions eating that meat. And fish eating worms. Birds eating mice.
It's natural and a part of life.

Technically plants are being killed and research shows they have "screams" too.

SPsTwerkingNineToFive · 05/10/2013 16:03

From what I understand the animals have to be alive when they are slaughtered

well. yes. You can't be slaughtered if you're dead

Only got as fat as this! Grin

SPsTwerkingNineToFive · 05/10/2013 16:05

As far as this*

Bazoo23 · 05/10/2013 17:24

Lol at being racist if you dare express an opinion that isnt totally pro Muslim!

Thants · 05/10/2013 17:40

It is no crueler then how the U.K. meat industry kill animals. Killing animals is cruel if you have an issue with that don't eat meat. Halal is no worse

Bazoo23 · 05/10/2013 17:52

Or people could not eat halal if they dont want to?

Thants · 05/10/2013 18:05

Yes they don't have to, but why only stop eating halal? It is no more cruel! It is hypocritical only avoiding halal.

Bazoo23 · 05/10/2013 19:41

Therefore its hypocritical of Muslims to avoid halal meat I assume? It is no more pure!

Bazoo23 · 05/10/2013 19:41

*to avoid non halal meat

Cosmos123 · 05/10/2013 19:58

Thants your point is correct. However you dress it, to eat meat you need to kill first. Most do not know how their meat was reared or killed when it is on their dinner plate.

Others need to know as they follow cultural practices .

Why does it matter that Jewish want to eat kosher meat , Muslims halal meat and Hindus non meat?

Banzoo - what are you chatting about.
I don't think anyone want is being hypocritical in making their choice.

Bazoo23 · 05/10/2013 20:18

Thants comment that it is hypocritical to avoid halal meat is what Im answering

This terror of offending Muslims and bending over backwards to show how "cool and liberal" you are makes me want to scream.
I called Lee Rigbys killers murdering scum on here and got flamed and told they were simply misguided.

muslims are people just like anyone else, they dont deserve abuse nor do they deserve special treatment.

Bazoo23 · 05/10/2013 20:24

And the vast majority dont want it, its other people.
It wasnt muslims who decided that the posters in my bank of piggy banks were offensive and must be removed, it was management who were concerned a muslim may be offended.
Ridiculous!

Cosmos123 · 05/10/2013 20:30
Biscuit
Bazoo23 · 05/10/2013 20:42

Oooh - the ultimate insult...No wait..I dont care.

Thants · 06/10/2013 10:02

Why would that be terror of offending Muslims saying it is equally cruel? That makes no sense. Can you explain?
It is not equally pure though, the prayer part etc. you must see that.

Bazoo23 · 06/10/2013 14:54

They believe it is more pure. Realistically saying a prayer makes no difference. It is just words

ohnoimnot · 06/10/2013 15:03

Is the OP a daily mail reporter?

YouTheCat · 06/10/2013 15:14

Bazoo, were you previously 'AdventureTed'?

Thants · 06/10/2013 15:33

Yes so there is a legitimate reason why a Muslim person would want to eat halal.
But for a non Muslim to say they are against halal because it is crueler makes no sense because it is not crueler. Do you see?
Don't eat halal if you don't want, that's fair enough. But don't claim that it is crueler because it is not.
If you have issues with killing animals don't eat meat. No cruelty there AT ALL!

Bazoo23 · 06/10/2013 15:58

As previously stated I am a vegetarian and have been for 15 years.
Im entitled to my opinion and you wont change it.

Bazoo23 · 06/10/2013 15:59

And no, Im not ashamed of my opinions so wouldnt namechange.
Halal meat is horrific. IMO.
