to think Halal meat is cruel?

IAmMiranda · 04/10/2013 13:36

Bought a very nice panini today (bacon, brie and cranberry) from the local sandwich shop.

I didn't realise at the time that all the meat in that shop is Halal, which I am strongly opposed to.

Here is Wiki's description of Halal

^"Specifically, the slaughter must be performed by a Muslim, who must precede the slaughter by invoking the name of Allah, most commonly by saying "Bismillah" ("In the name of Allah") and then three times "Allahu akbar" (God is the greatest). Then, the animal must be slaughtered with a sharp knife by cutting the throat, windpipe and the blood vessels in the neck (while the animal is conscious), causing the animal’s death without cutting the spinal cord. Lastly, the blood from the veins must be drained."

AIBU to think this seems unnecessarily cruel?

(I realise the UK meat industry is far from perfect but this seems particularly nasty)

Charming. I have to say I shall not lose too much sleep. Shame you can't have a civilised argument without cheap digs and sarcastic comments. Anyway Nicola Benadetti has just given a lovely acceptance for best female artist of the year so I couldn't give a flying whatever anyone negative has to say. I'd rather listen to people like her than the mob minded who have no idea.

YouTheCat · 06/10/2013 22:46

She wins it every year, unless Katherine Jenkins does. Confused

I really don't see how not being bothered about Halal meat makes me unpatriotic? There are plenty of British Muslims who are patriotic you know.

I love Britain - really do. I try to be a good citizen. I eat halal meat - draw the line at halal bacon though Grin . I am a muslim. Do i still get to qualify as being patriotic?

Yes, most Muslims are patriotic and I respect them for that. I think that the Muslim community work harder than anyone. My main gripe is that some schools are forced to serve Halal meat only and that upsets me. There was a thread on here recently and they didn't t have a choice. Oh dear lord Joseph calleja's voice! I'm off to weep for the night, I have no strength to fight.........

Haha no. It was what was left on after me DD went to bed. I can say that I was actually not interested in what was going on on this thread to know what was on in the background but then ol' Benadetti piped up in her Scottish accent, I'm a scot. Then joe started, well, as an emotional human bean I thought I'd throw it into the hot topic. One human to the next. Obviously you have to be a little bitter and just a bit rude to survive this bashing. Why would I try to impress people I don't know?

defuse · 06/10/2013 23:08

Bigotry. You like muslims.... but your main gripe is about muslims, followed by another, followed by another followed by another. And everything is the muslims fault. If only we would all stop bending over backwards, head over heels ( sorry, i couldnt resist - meant as tongue - in - cheek) for them, if only they would know their place, if only they would abide by the law of the land, if only it wouldn't be one rule for them and one rule for us! And so it continues.

YouTheCat · 06/10/2013 23:12

Exactly, Defuse.

Ponyo73 · 06/10/2013 23:20

When have i ever said that fault lies with the Muslim community? Never, how dare you? All I have done is expressed a view that Halal meat is in my opinion, a cruel practice. I am not alone in this opinion and will not apologise. I have read up on the process of this practice and formulated my own thoughts on this. I have never or would ever stop this act as it is a religious choice. Yet, you insult and humiliate me when I choose to air my opinion, shame on you.

defuse · 06/10/2013 23:35

Ponyo, i am not attacking you but challenging your views. I have called your views bigoted because they are - take another look at your viewson this thread:

' I'm all for multi culturism, ethnic diversity and embracing new ways of life. But...'

,' such protection given to these minorities '

'We have our laws and beliefs pertaining to animals, and everyone who wishes to be a citizen of this country should adhere and respect'

' I have many 3rd generation friends from abroad '

'Just saying that the Halal method is not of our culture '

' do you think their govt would bend over backwards for fear of offence?'

Need i say more - your words speak volumes.

GruffBillyGoat · 07/10/2013 00:19

"From what I understand the animals have to be alive when they are slaughtered to hear the prayer"

Everything must be alive in order to be slaughtered...

Bazoo23 · 07/10/2013 06:20

Not one of Ponyos comments are bigoted they just dont match your views.

fuzzywuzzy · 07/10/2013 06:57

The animal does not need to hear the prayer, that is the stupidest thing I have heard.

YouTheCat · 07/10/2013 07:15

If you don't want your views challenged, I'd suggest hiding AIBU and settling in Chat.

Cosmos123 · 07/10/2013 07:29

Hang on Bazoo23 you can have an opinion and ponyo can have an opinion.

But dare anyone else who see no problem with Halal or KOSHER and is ACCEPTING of others practices.

They make you want to scream as they are acting "cool and liberal".

Yer that makes sense.

Thants · 07/10/2013 08:01

Maybe instead of whinging about halal which really is a drop in the ocean why not go out and campaign against battery farming? Supermarkets sell millions of cheap animals every year that are so cheap because they are treated so cruelly. It seems odd to pick on halal which makes up so little of the meat consumed in this country and as has been explained to you is not a crueler way of killing.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 07/10/2013 10:35

Thants
I couldn't agree more. For example, what do people think happen to the male chicks. According to the RSPCA instant mechanical destruction is humane.
www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/earthnews/8107957/40-million-chicks-on-conveyor-belt-to-death.html

Life for the females who survive is not much of an improvement.

alemci · 07/10/2013 10:47

I agree with Ponyo to an extent. If my dc was in a school and was served halal meat I wouldn't be particulary happy as not every dc is muslim in the school so why should it be the norm. When Jewish dc attend a secular school then Kosher meat isn't served. I don't understand why this has happened.

It probably is cruel but then as other posters have said then so is all animal slaughter for food but then alot of these animals wouldn't even exist as they would serve no purpose i suppose.

FruityPops · 07/10/2013 11:52

Theodorakiss - You said earlier "Bastards, I would Halal a DM journalist without a conscience". Is this not hate speech?

fuzzywuzzy · 07/10/2013 12:37

Alemci if the majority of children attending the secular school we Jewish I would expect the food served would then be Kosher.

It's economics, otherwise nobody is taking up the offer of school dinners, schools offer what most of the people sending their chidlren will pay for.

Dawndonnaagain · 07/10/2013 14:14

Yeah, hate speech against a hate filled newspaper Fruity.
