Personalised number plates

Why would someone pay money to have a misspelt version of their name on their car? Or words?

E.g. M41HEW, A11CET, OF55IDE T

I get the initials ones, not that i would want one, don't get this.

I have a theory though!

I always think it a sign of lack of imagination, if buying a number plate is really the best thing that you can think of to spend money on, other than warning others to your state of mind it is entirely pointless.

I think the majority are bought by parents of children who have got to 17/18/21 and they can't think what to buy them.
I'd have been mortified if my parents did this!

They were a good investment, my dad has one that he bought for £50 when I was small, he was recently offered £25k for it.

My bil has one thats suppose to look like Kenny, but it looks more like Kidney Grin
He once told me I was jealous because I didnt have one..I replied Ive better things to spend my wages on like my mortgage and bills (he hasnt worked in years and fritters all his cash on crap)

I always thought they were bought partly to disguise the age of the car. The new style mini has looked the same for the best part of ten years, and I see a lot of personal plates on them so it's hard to know if it's a 10 year old car or nearly brand new.

My Dad has one, which we clubbed together to buy for his 50th 15 years ago as we had absolutely no idea what to buy him.

It is clearly his name, and what cost £250 back then, add a couple of noughts to now

i think theyre totally pointless. especially ones that are initials. they only mean something if you know the initials of the driver.

I cannot ever imagine a time where I have some money and think I cannot think of anything I would rather do with this money than buy a personalised number plate.

I had a 'MR5* *'plate as a surprise from my DH the night before our wedding.

It sits on my car not hurting anyone, not costing anyone anything (except my DH).
I was really happy that he was proud for me to be his misspelt wife, and when I see it it makes me smile as its a reminder of my wedding.

I don't understand why the pattern of letters on my numberplate would be worth even a second thought to strangers, let alone why it warrants judgements on whether I'm a platinum plonker or my state of mind.

Nothing wrong with decent plates but nothing more tasteless than misspelt/incorrectly spaced ones.

I once saw an extremely classy (and fast) car being driven through our city centre with '29 MPH' plates on it. I would have loved those plates - although I would imagine that the owner had to put up with being stopped every 10 minutes by the police - on general principle. Would have been worth it for a few days though.

Anything else beats me. Usually, if I see ads for 'cherished plates', I completely fail to work out what they're supposed to represent. Lack of imagination I guess.

I think if anyone has the excess money to waste on a personalised number plate,that money should go to charity.
For something that is actually needed.

I think the main reason people get them is so people don't know how old their car is. like it matters.

i don't understand the ones that make your car look older though-yes, it's your initials but they didn't make that car in 2002. Grin

My Dad and DB have PP. It's a bit embarrassing TBH.

The ones that are really Confused are the ones that incorporate the model of the car in them. Seen on BMW X5s round here.
