Why would someone pay money to have a misspelt version of their name on their car? Or words?

E.g. M41HEW, A11CET, OF55IDE T

I get the initials ones, not that i would want one, don't get this.

I have a theory though!

Grin Bowlers. Mmmm new car smell.

It seemed quite a faff to swap the personalised number plate when buying a new car-unless my Dad moaned more than was necessary....

merrymum · 30/09/2013 17:14

I think if anyone has the excess money to waste on a personalised number plate, that money should go to charity.
For something that is actually needed.

Don't think I misinterpreted that? it's what you said? in your opinion they are a waste of money, not in mine, but then it would be boring if everyone thought the same.

neunundneunzigluftballons · 30/09/2013 17:17

As my father told my brother when he told him he spent a grand getting a personalised numberplate 'well that is the price of an ego'.

VerySmallSqueak · 30/09/2013 17:18

merrymum I cannot make you spend it any way other than how you want.

But if I had a paid up mortgage and bills and my kids were well fed and looked after,I would think of others who weren't so lucky before I wasted good money on a useless set of numbers and letters for the car(s).

Hope you enjoy them though.

SouthernComforts · 30/09/2013 17:22

There are a few P1K3Y 1/2/3 plates near me!!

Thisisaeuphemism · 30/09/2013 17:25

I think it's funny that people with stupid pp dont seem to realise what most people think of them.

merrymum · 30/09/2013 17:35

So now you are making a judgement against me? when I said my mortgage is paid, I should have said 'every month' after it. Me and my DH work hard for our money, we are not rich, but you think just because we are comfortable I should give away my money? We sponsor a local football team, I give my time freely to a sure start centre, we donate every month to 3 different charities, I buy things in charity shops, I give things away to charity, in YOUR opinion, we have 'wasted money', they were/are a bit of fun, and as I said before, they mean nothing to anyone else, you probably wouldn't even notice they were PP, but to us, they mean something and were a gift to each other.
And yes, we do enjoy them.

SelectAUserName · 30/09/2013 17:39

I've never had one but I couldn't give a flying one if other people want to buy them. If there's a thriving market for them then it's all money sloshing round stimulating the economy, isn't it?

I do find it amusing when people who disapprove of them get all frothy and quick to highlight particularly 'tacky' (in their opinion) examples that they have apparently seen, which aren't actually possible under any of the UK's current or previous numberplate letter/digit combinations and so are clearly made up in an attempt to prove their point. I didn't need all that explanation merry.

I told you what I would do in the situation you described.

That's all Smile

Viviennemary · 30/09/2013 17:51

But the point is the OP asked people what they thought about them. I think they're pointless but if you think they are an important part of your identity then fine. But why expect others to feel the same. They just disagree.

spatchcock · 30/09/2013 17:51

Chill, merrymum, no need to go into the ins and outs of your finances, no one really cares what you spend your money on.

I don't have one either, and don't see the point. But don't give a shit if others do. Live and let live and all that.

bishboschone · 30/09/2013 17:53

It's a bit of fun.. I love mine.. Makes me smile .. Not worth getting upset about.

persimmon · 30/09/2013 17:54

Years ago, Muriel Gray wrote in the The Tube annual Grin "Boys! Don't waste time growing a moustache - simply write 'I'm a prat' on your top lip".
That is how I feel about personalised number plates.

SoupDragon · 30/09/2013 17:55

I have a theory about people who start threads like this time and time again when it's been done to death and always ends up the same. I think it shows a lack of imagination if that's the best way you can come up with for spending your time. Other than showing up a pathetic judgmental nature it is utterly pointless.

LoopyLoopyLoopy · 30/09/2013 17:58

I want P155 0FF

SoupDragon · 30/09/2013 17:59

FWIW, I have one. It makes me smile. Yes, I have better things to spend my money on but I also have enough money to spend on those things too. If people make stupid judgments based on my number plate, it says more about them than it does about me.

Thisisaeuphemism · 30/09/2013 18:00

I thought they were an invitation to judge!

VerySmallSqueak · 30/09/2013 18:01

Suspected you had Soupdragon..... Wink

gordyslovesheep · 30/09/2013 18:02

I think they are the car version of 'all fur coat no knickers' Grin they baffle me - I don't get the appeal

PinkParsnips · 30/09/2013 18:03

I find personalised number plates in general just incredibly naff.

My husband passed someone on the motorway a while back in some flash car like a Bentley with the number plate - U W1SH - ughh how cringeworthy!!!

Personalised plates are a total waste of money. You would have to be mad to spend your money on something so pointless when you could spend it on diamonds or a nice mulberry handbag. Hmm

They are silly but so are a lot of things. They don't do any harm.

I really liked the 29MPH one mentioned below. I would like one that said 31MPH coz I like to live life on the edge Grin

YouHaveAGoodPoint · 30/09/2013 18:13

Oh, I have found a MumsNet number plate if you use your imagination and squint
