Why would someone pay money to have a misspelt version of their name on their car? Or words?

E.g. M41HEW, A11CET, OF55IDE T

I get the initials ones, not that i would want one, don't get this.

I have a theory though!

My aunt was just telling me how her and my dcousin were in a bidding war over the phone for a plate - they won it at £14k

My mouth was dragging on the f'ing floor. What I could do with £14k.................

Having said that my ds sold his car recently - car knackered but we got loads just for the number plate (which was NOT personalised but happened to have to name of a famous film on it).

No one has yet explained why it is considered a status symbol to spell your name wrong, other than to say other people will pay more for it in the future?!?
Most people don't like it when their name is spelt wrong in real life, why is it ok on a number plate!

I think they just scream 'look at me' especially when they spell out someone's name. Why do other road users need to know you're called Bec, 4my or T0m?

I've just been out for a run and have seen these:

T10 NAS
C10 XER on a Porsche boxster
C00 2IE
W3W ZER then in small writing at the bottom of the number plate was written Wowzer just in case we couldn't figure it out!

I wouldn't want any of those on my car!

I've seen LOU15E

Which I thought was cool.

My DS name would work. W1 LLJ and space it to look like W1LL J, if I can afford it or can find it.

Mine says my name and its spelt correctly.
I've had it 15 years and it's probably worth ten times what it was bought for (it was a gift). There's no way I'd have spent the same amount on a holiday as a pp has said. But I wouldn't criticise anyone for doing so, as it's up to them.

Oh and I've seen LOU15E too bowler!

I saw one that looked like Lois Sucks yesterday. I was desperate to pull alongside and see what Lois looked like but it was not meant to be.

Do you think it was a present from someone who doesn't like Lois very much?

But you can't change the spacing - is illegal.

Don't get it personally, but each to their own. However, what never fails to amaze me is the number of people with personalised plates who don't realise that it is a surefire way to attract attention. Therefore, don't get them unless your car is in 100% tip-top, fully legal condition and/or you have a hidden music system.

We have my initials and DH's initials and the year we got married. It actually does make our car look older but we know what it means and we got it for ourselves not for anyone else.

I am baffled as to why it is an issue to anyone at all. I don't have one but I can honestly say it has never crossed my mind to be bothered by it.

VerySmallSqueak I actually feel a bit Angry at your comment. Who is to say those people do not make sizeable donations to charities as well. What a strange thing to say about another persons disposable income.

It is like saying that anything anyone buys over and above the very basic essentials should donate all their cash to charity.

I am not bothered by them, each to their own and all that. They are very entertaining though.

A neighbour had one that only worked with incorrect spacing. When the law about not being able to change spacing came in and she changed her car it looked daft... Grin

I agree that dodgy spellings don't look good.

My parents bought themselves personalised plates in the late 60s and I remember going with them to pick up the old jalopies they were on.

I've inherited them now. My car has a single number and my mum's 3 initials. I like it as it reminds me of her and when I bought my car (2 years old) it looked like new.

I've put my Dad's plate on our horsebox. It is a brand new build but on an old chassis so hides it's age well too.

They are utterly pointless and a waste of money imo - but hey, when did money and sense ever go together?

I thought the spacing thing was illegal now? I see loads of cars round here driving about with all sorts of weird and wonderful plates, so presumably the police don't see it as a priority - RIIONA (with a dot in the middle of the II) is a local Audi driving twat who sits on everyone's bumpers, for example.

Apologies AKAK I obviously didn't note the correct combo of numbers and letters if it doesn't exist.

But I did see one that did, in some way or another, say BIG DICK

I wonder if anyone has BIG VAG

We have BIG DIKS round here - belongs to a chap name Dick. It's a Range Rover, we live in a surburban estate. Go figure.

I am completely for real.

I agree that there are a lot of things people do not need that they waste their money on,but this thread is about personalised number plates.

I stand by my comments.
