Why would someone pay money to have a misspelt version of their name on their car? Or words?

E.g. M41HEW, A11CET, OF55IDE T

I get the initials ones, not that i would want one, don't get this.

I have a theory though!

I imagine registrations are fairly randomly generated, with a few words blocked but if anything properly offensive slips through the net, it gets blocked before it's actually released. I would hope they get checked manually before becoming properly official, anyway.

No matter what numbers/letters are used they all say wanker to me.

Oh there's a bloke down the road who has an X5, his wife a convertible BMW something-or-other. Both vehicles have 3 initials and a couple of numbers on them.

Neither bear any resemblance of either of their names. Cringe. They are top of the range posers though, they have a hot tub and designer everything but can't pay the electricity bill.

For only £399 you could have EVlL MEN. Surely there are a few MN'ers that would like it.

I don't like them, think they are pretentious and rather stupid, but DH hates them with a passion.

DB, SIL and DN all have stupid, posey ones. I only have to mention them to get DH all wound up Grin

Driving sporty cars is fun. That's why people in them grin so much. They're not smiling because they're rich and you're not - I doubt they give a toss tbh.

bought by pretentious folk trying to hide the age of their car.

There's a G0 5LOW plate on a Bentley kicking about Glasgow. That's quite funny.

But as a rule, I abhor private plates. Tacky as anything. Plus, everyone who knows you would know where you were. You couldn't really deny being somewhere if you needed to.

There are a couple of good ones local to me but I'm guessing they probably must have set their owners back a fair bit as they're words rather than just initials.

One is P5 YCH (Psych)
Other is 1 NET (which looks like I NET)

Paul Daniels used to have a red Ferrari with the number plate MAG 1C on which was a good one too.

My dad used to have coaches and he used to put cheap private number plates onto coaches because people would get really fussy about having the new coach or get upset because they were on a coach that was a year or two older than the other one sent to pick them up. However all his coaches were really well looked after and depending on the time of the year there might only be a month or two's difference in age of the coach but if they were bought either side of the (then!) annual registration letter change, they'd kick up a fuss. Much easier to have private plates and have people appreciate the actual nice-ness of the coaches they actually had rather than any perceived problems because of a letter on the front of the coach.

Ugh I hate personalised number plates. They look so tacky.

There's a woman who picks her Dd up in a massive 4x4 with a number plate 5 - (3 letters of the surname) at our school. Once I saw exactly the same car with the number plate 4 - and there was an older woman (grandma?) driving it. I think the whole family have all bought the same car and have different variations of the number plate. Weird.

I would imagine the only way to enjoy (still don't get enjoying a car but still) a Ferrari is to book one of the track days at Silverstone or similar.

Moronic if you think that they only way to 'enjoy' a Ferrari is to drive like a moron Jenai. See RedToothBrush's excellent post above.
