Here's an extract of the lyrics if you are lucky enough to have not been subjected to them...

Baby, it's in your nature
Just let me liberate you
You don't need no papers
That man is not your maker
And that's why I'm gon' take a
Good girl
I know you want it
I know you want it
I know you want it
You're a good girl

I'll give you something big enough to tear your ass in two

Nothin' like your last guy, he too square for you
He don't smack that ass and pull your hair like that
So I'm just watching and waitin'
For you to salute the true big pimpin'

Do it like it hurt, like it hurt
What you don't like work

I know it's a bit old now... But it still makes me so Angry

This whole topic makes me so cross even though I have only read about 40 of the 316 posts so far and am a somewhat ad hoc poster. Please forgive me for the obvious lack of academic language but wanted to make a point.

As an English literature student in the 1990s, I read, amongst everything on my prescribed reading list, feminist literal theory and criticism. Pornography was addressed and I read Andrea Dworkin's take on the whole thing. At the time, I wholeheartedly agreed with her in terms of my reading and living as a student with a feminist perspective.

However, my real life at the time was full of good friends (who wholeheartedly identified as feminist) trying to persuade me how emancipating the whole process of going to a lapancing club with your boyfriend/ partner could be and how much it added to your relationship. Fortunately, I seemed to choose partners who were all about not objectifying their 'women' and understood that this did not add anything to my state as an 'emancipated' woman. To my friends, I was a prude.

Fast forward 20 years and for my young daughters to be part of 'the zeitgeist' they need to have their bodies pruned beyond belief both in terms of the actual space they take up on the earth and how many of the earth's resources they use (ie food consumption) never mind the perpetual state of hairlessness expected by their male (and female) peers.

I know this is a general rant, but to me there is a definite link between the predominant female attitude I came across in my 20s where it was ok to watch porn and 'agree' with what it stood for in terms of feminist equality, and the whole mainstreaming of pornographic ideals. To me it was where the ' blurred lines' began.

What I want to say is this; although I do not agree with any of the lyrics in this song, surely it is a natural progression for men who have been fed the 'emancipation' line over the last 25 years (at least)? It does not make it right or acceptable, it just means mothers have the additional responsibility to educate our sons in such a way as to not objectify the women in their lives.

limitedperiodonly - sorry it's taken me a day to reply, had a busy weekend. I would like to challenge you on the concept that young people today have 'shocking morals'. I do not believe this is the case.
'Radio silence' is a good idea when children are around imo- and necessary- imo more for the content of the news than anything else.

mrsruffallo · 18/08/2013 20:26

I agree with Wasapea on the whole. The whole song seems to be about a couple entering into a particular sexual relationship.

The video is creepy, but I think the lyrics are being taken too literally.

As a long time fan of hip hop I find it interesting how people misinterpret stuff that they really don't understand. Admittedly there's a lot of sexist crap going on but the women in hip hop culture aren't all nicey nicey and the kind to get phased by a bloke telling them they know what they want. I don't particularly like the track but he's only telling some imaginary woman that he's got a bick cock.

Interestingly enough I read a thread on another sub forum here where women were openly saying that they don't like small penises so I guess this chap is only telling her what she wants to hear?

Anyways just in case anyone was thinking it was a one way street here are a few choice verses from a talented female MC:

Peeped all the stash drop and exchange of the dough
Lurkin through the turf, think how I'ma just work
Give em chase to the crib and yo he properly laced
Stepped out the car, put my steel, to the side of his face
Murder - this the fuckin Case, rob this nigga and shake
the fuckin spot cause in a few it's gon' be crawlin with cops!
Who's the bad bitch now, you crept on, paid the piper
Who'da thought a sexy bitch could be a murderous sniper
Detrimental to your health, shoulda learned yo' lesson
But it's too late nigga bye-bye, better count yo' blessings
I been watchin you watchin me, yeah you ballin
Was, nigga now you finger fucked and steady fallin
A thug wit no love, but bitch niggaz die fast
Thug niggaz die young - oh what you thought you would last?
Blast two shots to the dome, slide back to the pad
and jack my nigga off, til his dick get soft
Resume the wifey boo shit, cause yo my man don't know
that his bitch is straight ill, servin ass with fo'fo'.

Or how about:

Nigga WHUT??! I'm a hustlin bitch!
I like them get rich niggaz, them hit the switch niggaz
Niggaz bout the sex and which bitch to hit next
while I'm kickin my game and collectin them checks
Got all y'all niggaz vexed to fuck this triple-X rated hoe
You say you ain't eat it - you ate it though
And uhh, Roq don't stop, can't be droppin no drawers
To the niggaz how you figure got you shittin in yours
Yeah, little dicks always runnin they mouth
While a bitch is better off to masturbate and be out
All you bitches up in here know what I'm talkin about
Get the loot, get the ice, fuck the wife, no doubt
Tryin to live lavish, marry a big dick and stay carried
Holla back at them niggaz that hollered at me
Pop the Cris', whip the six and shit
and have all y'all niggaz limp when I twist my shit
Yeah! Bitch ass niggaz!

Do you alis? I like the term 'rapey' myself.

It's probably because though I'm obviously extremely angry about rapists, I reserve a special contempt for apologists, both male and female, who vastly outnumber rapists but enable them because it's just blurred lines, isn't it?

So subsequently I like to say to these people: 'Hey! What you've said is a bit rapey, isn't it?' and then have a discussion, though in reality they just look at their shoes and shut up.

I find it a little more polite than saying in public: 'What you've just said is fucking indefensible of a disgusting crime.'

Though I'd be prepared to move on to that if they continued to be so fucking stupid.

Buttercup4 · 19/08/2013 00:16

Very well said LPO

MrsTerryPratchett · 19/08/2013 03:47

Turns out Mr Thicke has answered all your questions. ?We tried to do everything that was taboo. Bestiality, drug injections, and everything that is completely derogatory towards women. Because all three of us are happily married with children, we were like, ?We?re the perfect guys to make fun of this.?
People say, ?Hey, do you think this is degrading to women?? I?m like, ? Of course it is. What a pleasure it is to degrade a woman. I?ve never gotten to do that before. I?ve always respected women.? So we just wanted to turn it over on its head and make people go, ?Women and their bodies are beautiful. Men are always gonna want to follow them around.??

Wasapea · 19/08/2013 09:46

Robin Thicke is a dickhead. All his other songs are rubbish. Not sure it makes him a rape apologist.

SolidGoldBrass · 19/08/2013 10:52

Robin Thicke is a man with some serious issues. Not surprised he has been 'with the same woman since he was a teenager' - he's a walking Madonna-whore complex. With crippling anxieties about the size of his knob and his actual skill with it. Hence this nasty, disingenuous song and video.

Al0uise · 26/08/2013 10:53

It's all fine now. Watch Miley Cyrus and him at the VMA's last night. She exploited him thoroughly and he looked a bit uncomfortable.

SubliminalMassaging · 26/08/2013 10:55

Have you seen the spoof video for it? Someone has a thread linking to it here now. It's hilarious.

I can only imagine that most people don't even hear or pay any attention to the lyrics, so heinous are they, I have to assume they have passed most people by - it's a decent dance tune after all.

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 27/08/2013 12:15

I've been ignoring this thread until I saw the parody today, not a follower of pop music at all.

Its simply 50 shades the song! Liked by people who can't see the abuse that is blatently obvious to others. (Does this say more about those who do or dont see it?)

Telling some doe eyed, insipid blow up doll equivalent to do what you "know she wants", whether that is just persuading to do some specific sex act she has not expilictly consented to umm, you do know that even if that's "all" the song is about, its still considered rape? or rape in the more general sense of the word Hmm

The same as 50 shqdes, I've noticed that the majority of people who know what they are talking about in the BDSM world are on the "anti" side of the argument. Coincidence?

Great parody of the song which has been banned by you tube, which seems a tad of a double standard!

Tittybangbang · 02/09/2013 21:38

Love the parody - someone posted it on my fb page today.

My own experience of extreme sexual harrassment while working as a cocktail waitress in my late teens makes me look at the Robin Thicke video and feel sick. If you haven't experienced it you can't know how absolutely weird and grim it feels to be a scantily dressed/semi naked young woman surrounded by fully dressed men who you are expected to be subservient to, who are looking at you as though you are a PIECE OF MEAT.

I think it's a loathsome video, particularly the one where the women are naked.

PrincessFlirtyPants · 09/09/2013 18:52

Gosh, TBB that sounds horrible, I'm sorry the video reminds you of that
