To think they've ruined Dr Who by not casting someone young and hot?

I mean, why else would I want to watch it?!

And I hated the way Matt Smith was taking the Doctor. Showing his vulnerable side is fine- being utterly pathetic and leaving everything to his companion is quite another. Have a female Doctor- don't just have a companion who takes over.

And he was a graceless oaf last night.

I fell for him as a sixth former when he played a narcissistic rock star in a Ruth Rendell series.

I thought he was fantastic when he was in Torchwood too. When he went upstairs with the gun my flesh crawled.

RustyBear · 05/08/2013 16:46

Maybe they'll have a young male assistant for the hotness factor....

float62 · 05/08/2013 16:48

Oh now I finally realize what the pursuit of gender equality was worth. It means that it's not only over-50 'not so hot' women that shouldn't be allowed on our TV screens but the same now applies to men too. Wow, progress indeed?

LittleWhiteWolf · 05/08/2013 17:09

I stopped watching midway through the Matt Smith era. Didn't watch any of the stuff with Clara as I was so bored by the whole dynamic.

I'm so excited for the new era of Peter Capaldi! I had hoped for a woman, but as I didn't expect them to cast a woman I expressed a hope for an older, grumpier Doctor Who. I'm pretty sure I've got my second wish here Wink

Now I'd like a few new companions please, preferably some older women and men who are not tagging along as the boyfriend of the companion.

curlew · 05/08/2013 17:09

It's the ultimate dumbing down, isn't it? Equality will be achieved when women behave, in all areas of life, as badly as men do, and men are judged by the same criteria that women are.

Jux · 05/08/2013 17:25

I think he'll be good - he's a bloody good actor. As Dr Who, I'm reserving judgement, as I always have when the new guy comes in. I was a bit worried about Hartnell turning into Troughton, but as I've been watching it that long, I'm used to it now!

Don't like Drs who are too 'hot'. With DT, it seemed like the writers were all too aware of the attraction of the actor to - um - older women, and started writing to encourage that. It all became a bit shit, frankly. Hope they don't make the same mistake again.

3littlefrogs · 05/08/2013 17:30

I will wait to see how it goes. But - I can't help feeling they have missed the point that with each regeneration the doctor is supposed to be getting younger. The purists will find this particular departure from the "rules" difficult to accept.

LondonMother · 05/08/2013 17:36

I don't think anyone's posted this so far. Prescient stuff, as I see it dates from two years ago!

Peter Capaldi has one of the most fabulous voices I've ever heard. I wonder what accent he will use.

RustyBear · 05/08/2013 17:36

Interesting, jux, that when Hartnell turned into Troughton the BBC really weren't sure that the regeneration was going to be accepted - they played down the change, made his first enemy the Daleks and emphasised Troughton's familiarity to viewers - quite a difference nowadays!

RustyBear · 05/08/2013 17:41

"I can't help feeling they have missed the point that with each regeneration the doctor is supposed to be getting younger. The purists will find this particular departure from the "rules" difficult to accept."

This purist knows that there is no such rule - several new doctors have been older than the one they replaced...

YABU, Matt smith apparently was 'hot' (bleugh, give me 9 or 10 any day) and young yet he was pretty crap and just seemed like a 10 wannabe on good days and poor doctor on others.

I'm crossing my fingers that this one is better, don't want to have to give up on Doctor Who altogether!

bigbuttons · 05/08/2013 19:49

Matt smith looked really really odd, like his head had been squashed. Not attractive in the slightest. I was sick of all the dr love interest stuff, really tedious. I don't know much about PC but i can see he will make a good dr and having had to forgo all the Matt Smith years i am happy i can start watching again.

Lottapianos · 05/08/2013 20:32

LadyClarice, it SO IS NOT TRUE Wink

'I was sick of all the dr love interest stuff, really tedious.'

i do agree with this actually, very tedious. And was making me sick with jealousy Blush

Jux · 05/08/2013 22:26

By the time DT finally fucked off left, I was sick to death of him. Never wanted to see him in anything ever again! Thank goodness MT wasn't really up to love stuff. It's so nice not habing to listen to the daft mums going on about Dr Who just because they fancy the doctor. I have a horrid feeling PC will suddenly become very, very attractive to people who haven't really noticed him before, and he'll stay for years and years and years with the writting putting in crap with people like Rose again. SadSadSad

Jux · 05/08/2013 22:28

Forgive spelling errors. That's how miserable I felt, thinking about it!!

guffaw · 05/08/2013 22:32

hate dr who, but will now be joining dp to watch, avidly Grin

Ficklefrancis · 06/08/2013 08:43

Obviously we all have different tastes and they were never going to keep us all happy.
I prefer someone young (especially the last two) its just how I feel, sorry I am just really not into older men.
I love to watch dr who and imagine him tipping up in his tardis in my lounge all handsome and a little bit odd. Those fantasies sometimes get me through the day ;) I certainly can not do that with the new dr so my hubby will be left in peace to watch it from now on.
It's ok though because I have plenty of dr who on blu-ray ;)

SarahBumBarer · 06/08/2013 12:56

I'm never happy about the choice of a new doctor and I am usually proved wrong. I'm less unhappy than usual about this choice and hope that I am not more wrong than usual. Did that make any sense? Grin

Jux · 06/08/2013 19:24

Grin @ sarah

LineRunner · 07/08/2013 12:58

Perfect sense, Sarah. Smile
