The most boring drug in the world.

For the people not taking it?

Just been to a 'party' at a house. Big divide between the drug takers and the non drug takers. Drug takers up and down the stairs for a line. No conversation. The rest of us flailing in the non atmosphere.

Grrr. I work in a bar so I put up with this shit at work. Now it's every time I go out for a drink or to a house.

AIBU to think bore off you boring bastards?

secondcoming if its any illegal drug then that may make a bit more sense.

TheSmallClanger · 04/08/2013 18:00

As well as thinking coke is for wankers, I see and hear about the nastiness that comes from the illegal import of drugs into this country. Mostly, the really nasty cases (drug mules, often very young, ending up on life support before being tried and jailed, while the barons escape detection) involve cocaine and heroin.

I used have a few drug fans among my friends, but I can no longer associate with those who haven't grown out of it, due to my job.

MissMarplesBloomers · 04/08/2013 18:02

Burberry- there is research based evidence (which sorry I can't link to) that it takes on average the equivalent of a bottle of whiskey several times a week for a year or more to knacker your liver.

Some people will take less some can build up a tolerance and take a lot more- neither is ideal.

There is also many reports from eminent neurological specialists who have studied the effects of mind altering drugs on the brain & while it APPPEARS to hae no efect on the brain it always does, and just as with alcohol more harmful to some than others.

I have never known anyone die from a nasty reaction to a glass of alcohol (although I'm sure there have been nasty reactions reported) I HAVE known people, youngsters die from one E or ht of cocaine. (or the side effects)

Like Hoiky I also have the hatred of the whole business that goes to provide this recreational stuff, and the misery it causes millions every day.

thegreylady · 04/08/2013 18:04

I can't believe any of you think these drugs are ok for anyone! It is not ok, it is not legal and it does no good at all whilst having the possibility for great harm to vulnerable people.taking drugs is wrong and selling drugs is worse. It isn't even a matter for debate surely.

burberryqueen · 04/08/2013 18:06

good info missmarple -
thegreylady - there is definitely room for a debate on this one, as this thread shows.

burberryqueen · 04/08/2013 18:13

also missmarple, if someone died from one hit of E or cocaine then it was impure or adulterated with poisons which wouldnt happen if it was regulated, taxed etc.
for example it would be quite possible to die from one hit of bad moonshine or spiritus. but that doesnt happen because the alcohol trade is regulated, i am sure it did happen during prohibition.

TimeofChange · 04/08/2013 18:21

If they legalised it we could have Fair Trade cocaine.
Sorry, couldn't resist it!

I do know people who have died in their 40s from cancers related to drug use, but they were the first to say they had loved living their lives and had no regrets.
They were the sort of adrenaline junkie person.

burberryqueen · 04/08/2013 18:23

Grin @ fairtrade cocaine - yes u would get middle class mums being all holy about whether their cocaine was ethically sourced...

HepsibarCrinkletoes · 04/08/2013 18:27

Hahahaha at Fairtrade Cocaine. Found in the Munchie Aisle at Waitrose up and down the country. Do you think there'd be BOGOFs every so often, or would we buy it by the eighth?

SignoraStronza · 04/08/2013 18:40

I tried it a few times. Just made me talk bollocks. Any subsequent sex never reached the required erm... finale so to speak. Blush

IMO anyone touching it after the age of say, 23, is a bit of a saddo. Believe you're more likely to find it among the push dinner party guests and 'family' festival types these days though - a kind of youth re-creater drug.

YouMakeMeWannaLaLa · 04/08/2013 18:42

I've never taken illegal drugs but that's only because I was never offered any and wouldn't have a clue where to seek them out.

My parents always said to make sure I told them immediately if I was offered any and how evil they were but secretly I was desperate to see a dealer hanging around the school gates and would have tried anything Shock

Now I'm sorta glad it passed me by because I tend to everything to excess and I think it would have been a disaster. And at school we were daily reminded about the Leah Betts story (see I can still remember it).

Now I have a few friends who smoke joints but I've never knowingly been around coke, though am prepared to accept I have been.

garlicagain · 04/08/2013 18:49

Cocaine creates a pretty feeble physical dependence in most users. Like many middle-aged, ex-meeja bunnies, I know more people who stopped using it - or cut back to weekends only - some time in their late thirties, early forties. I also know several who can't or won't give it up, plus some who've adopted it relatively late in life. Mostly, coke 'addiction' is the hangover treated with yet another line, and psychological addiction to the altered persona.

There were cocaine addicts in rehab with me. All of them had serious underlying psychological issues and co-morbid addictions. None of them, sadly, got properly clean.

Those of you who think you know nobody who used cocaine - I think you do, it's just that you don't know about it. It's a bit like saying you don't know anyone who cheats on their partner - only more so, as, unlike infidelity, cocaine is illegal.

I bet you don't know how many of your mummy friends are addicted to Ritalin or speed, either. But if you know any mummies who've become more sparky, energetic and slimmer over the years ... well!

The exploitation & industrial crime involved in cocaine production & distribution - along with other illegal drugs - are the reasons I'd support de-criminalisation. That's an incredibly huge and complicated issue, though.

SouthernComforts · 04/08/2013 18:59

Grin @ fairtrade coke.

I agree taking coke at weekends isn't necessarily the slippery slope to addiction and ruin.

But I worry about what else is in the coke, how many times has it been cut with god knows what? How many times has it be sold on and cut before it gets to my friends?

Although I did laugh when I was watching a traffic cop show, they pulled a lad and he had a bag of white powder with him, admitted it was cocaine, they took him to the station, tested it, it had NO cocaine in it atall, so they had to release him without charge..

Elsiequadrille · 04/08/2013 19:01

Addiction and ruin is what I feared for my friend (mostly a weekend user). I just didn't know how accurate my fears were.

garlicagain · 04/08/2013 19:01

Oooh ... MDPV/cathinone/bath salt is more effective than methamphetamine! I'd better stay away from that stuff - crystal meth is the only 'speed' that ever worked for me!

garlicagain · 04/08/2013 19:02

Elsie - not that accurate :) There are better ways to spend one's weekend money, though, obv.

HesterShaw · 04/08/2013 19:39

My problem with coke and drugs in general is its link to organised crime.

Exactly that. The drugs trade is a trade in human misery.

filee777 · 04/08/2013 19:42

Coke is for me and my man alone, its not a social drug its a naked-fucking-all-night drug.

Oldraver · 04/08/2013 20:01

I've never been a massive fan of coke much preferred other drugs Its ok when its been me and another person in the bedroom but I have never liked being in the company of people taking coke in clubs. I'm not talking about the odd line but people who are hammering it. They tend to talk AT you and you cant get a word in edgeways. I admit it takes a while for the penny to drop with me, usually after I have a spent a while thinking I want to escape.

I haven't indulged for a while now and after two people I knew died last year it has altered my perspective on it for me

Ba1leys · 04/08/2013 21:16

So over rated. The more people have "a little line" the more they want. I found it only good to keep me awake.

As someone said above, bring back E's

thegreylady · 04/08/2013 21:21

I still find it difficult to realise that so many of you, presumably some of you parents, know where to acquire hard drugs and see no problem about using them in your homes. Thank you for bearing with me so patiently but I think this is hot the thread for me. I couldn't understand in a million years.

bootsycollins · 04/08/2013 21:52

They used to give E's out in marriage guidance sessions in the UK in the 70's

Ecstasy was only made illegal in the 80's in the USA

mystaplerisevil · 04/08/2013 22:00

lol at fucking all night drug

that sort of sums it up though doesn't it - all night doesn't that chaft a bit Wink

to me coke has always been a drug that wankers use

eccentrica · 04/08/2013 22:02

Coke is not great, even when you're doing it.

MDMA on the other hand is the most wonderful thing in the world and the shortest route to bliss, empathy and the best musical experiences of your life.

I was also a fan of LSD in the dim and distant past. But that would be a bit full-on for me now.

bootsycollins · 04/08/2013 22:08

I fucking love MD, I love LSD too, nice as an occasional adventure. I've had some pretty trippy MD though, very visual, lots of neon traces.
