AIBU to think buggy snobbery is alive and kicking!

I'm the owner of a (2nd hand) bugaboo bee which we bought simply because it was the best for public transport, small and light. Since entering the world of babies we have received an unexpected amount of comment both snobby and reverse snobby (ooh a bugaboo, yummy mummy are we)! WTF! Anyone judge or judges in secret?

when I do see a motgercare pushchair I do usually wonder if ithas broken yet or silently congratulate the owners on the wheels not falling off and having to face the 'we shall never replace this' poor customer service brigade Wink

onlyslightly joking

My Loola Up is now on DC2. I have no idea of its social standing and was only vaguely aware of its name because I delegated the entire buggy selection process to DH.

Our pushchair was cheap in a ToysRUs sale. I genuinely don't know what make it is.

I had a bugaboo cameleon for ds. I got several comments about how much it cost etc., but I bought it second hand and got a bargain. Fab buggy and I've had a few as ds is dc4. I've just sold it on as I bought a Maclaren, second hand again, for the car and that's what we use most now I'm back at work.

I don't judge, but I do notice and covet! Would have loved an Uppababy Vista, but my budget wouldn't stretch. I also notice grubby buggys, and would hoist my judgey pants high!

I have just had a look at the Mothercare website to look at some of the pushchairs. Boy are they fugly. I wouldn't want any of them. i think the Bugaboo Donkey is the fugliest.

I have a MacLaren xt which has lasted 3 dc and is still going. Lovely and tall hood suitable for when the child is 2-3. Flat with a cosytoe when newborn. It's suited every need I have perfectly.

My now retired GP pushes his gc around in an 80's vintage buggy. The sort of item that would start at 99p on eBay. He is a millionaire.

If you have the money and want a particular expensive buggy then go for it. The status idea is nonsense IMO.

I think people do judge, but it definitely depends where you live. When DD was born, we lived in a relatively 'posh' area of SW London and everyone (apart from me!) seemed to have a Bugaboo Chameleon. I think it's also fair to say that a big price tag doesn't always equal great quality (see below!)

Roll on two years, I'm PG with DC2 and we're now living in the USA. Bugaboos are popular here, but there's a much wider range of prams and pushchairs available in general, ranging from really very cheap ($150) to $$$. Uppababy is massive here and have great products and fantastic customer service. I can't really judge too much as I don't know half the brands though and I'm currently looking on Craigslist for a second hand double - probably a Bob or Baby Jogger (v popular here). There seems to be a lot more selling on of baby stuff here than in the UK - even carseats, which seems crazy to me.

Personally, I bought an iCandy Cherry first time round and it was the biggest waste of money EVER. Wheels had a design fault, got replacements, they fell off every 100m or so... If I hadn't moved overseas in the meantime, I'd have taken legal action against iCandy as the whole contraption was dangerous, and given that including all extras, travel bag, bassinet, footmuff etc, we're talking the best part of £800, I would have expected way, way more. Conversely, my £80 Maclaren umbrella stroller is AMAZING. And interestingly, none of my Bugaboo-toting friends back home had problems with their products - make of that what you will. Sometimes a product's reputation and price tag is well deserved, other times it's a massive con.

I'm blissfully unaware of all this, as I rarely go into town shopping, and don't have many friends with children under 5. The friends I do have, are like me - get the cheapest you can that works, as it's only a buggy after all! If I didn't drive and walked miles with it, I would probably have spent more - as it is, it's a good seat for DS to sit in to watch things and occasionally travel in!

And I agree Pants - if I'm going to judge anything these days, it would be cleanliness rather than brand!

I saw a Bugaboo Donkey today and thought it was great. I had to check out the name as I had no idea what make it was. It just looked very practical.

it's proper shit isn't it - with dd3 we had a bugaboo bee - because I owned a Mini at the time and I went to an independent pram shop and tried loads of pushchairs - this was the only one that fitted - so I got it

I didn't buy it to have a label or be 'a wag wannaby' (as one friend put it) it was just fucking practical

I feel your pain OP x

I always thought it was BMW's that were driven by twats, not Audi's Grin I have a pliko pramette, not sure if it's posh/chavvy. It was £265 2nd hand with a car seat/umbrella/changing bag to match. I have no idea about any sort of other buggy.. except that my cousin bought a Cath Kidston pushchair for her wee one and someone commented that it was very expensive?

If an iCandy is nothing to do with Apple, why does it have the i? That's just confusing!

Report
Sparklingbrook · 13/07/2013 19:00

Exactly noble. Apple's iBuggy. Grin

OMG it's real Who. Shock

Personally I think reverse snobbery is alive and kicking, I know I've been guilty of it this week when at an outpatient appointment. I was there with my twins and another twin mummy wheeled in her babies in a bugaboo donkey. I asked her a few quick questions regarding her own twins, but I was then called into clinic with my own pair. The conclusion I came to was that she wouldn't be 'my' sort of person because of her choice of pushchair/status symbol etc.
Probably unfair of me, but there you have it.
DOI- my own twins are in a Babyjogger city mini double.

I think iCandy were around a while ago, before the whole iPhone/iPad thing took off. All their prams are fruit and veg (just like the Waitrose vans!). As I said above though, worst purchase I've ever made so would definitely not recommend, quirky fruity names or not.

My quinny buzz is second hand, and bought because the seller wanted a stupidly low price for it. It came with carrycot, accessories and in amazing condition, and is also red Grin
Never realised that the buzz was considered chavvy! Me and dp are far from! Think skull shirts, tattoos, piercings etc. The only time I judge is when, like today, I see someone with a tiny baby and no umbrella, no good, no shade for baby!

Fruit and veg? Like the iCandy Cucumber? (Google sadly says no).

Mind you, I wouldn't have thought that Bugaboo Donkey was a real name either.

Report
Sparklingbrook · 13/07/2013 19:10

I have missed out on having a fruit and veg flavoured buggy by 14 years.

I am also blissfully unaware- my neighbour gave me her old one and I cleaned it up. They only get the baby from a to b. I have no idea what is considered desirable.
