AIBU?

AIBU to think buggy snobbery is alive and kicking!

I'm the owner of a (2nd hand) bugaboo bee which we bought simply because it was the best for public transport, small and light. Since entering the world of babies we have received an unexpected amount of comment both snobby and reverse snobby (ooh a bugaboo, yummy mummy are we)! WTF! Anyone judge or judges in secret?

Nah. Don't care about changing bags. I use a knackered old rucksack so my hands are free. If I can chuck it in the bottom of my lovely posh pushchair all the better.

YY to changing bag snobbery here.

I get comments on mine alot, it's a pink lining one I found in a charity shop for £3.50! I'd no idea, I just like it and thought it was way more practical than the one I had and cheaper. I sold my old one on eBay aswell!
I was a winner alround I think.

I love my pink lining bag purely for the strap comfortableness and all the pockets inside!

I bought this bag new and make no apologies for the price.

I am Shock at all these multiple pushchair households. One tends to do-then straight into the McClaren stroller asap? Well it was acceptable in the 90's.

Once the posho buggy stage is over is it straight onto reading levels in Reception or is there an interim competitive bit?

Of course buggies have different features too. I tried several, read the reviews, asked friends and got a 'snobby' one. Is it necessarily x times better than the cheapest buggy to justify the price difference? Probably not. I got it because I thought this was the best one for us. And honestly, if I make enough money to afford it, it is likely that I'm also not a total idiot paying only for the brand name.

Bloody hell. This bullshit didn't cross my mind when i got pregnant. I thought i was just having a baby. The people who have said that to you op are tedious beyond belief and should have a word with themselves.

I thank Graco for saving my sanity when I purchased their swing. It meant I could put DS1 down and do stuff/eat etc. I have a soft spot for Graco. My travel system was everything I needed too.

Push your Graco with pride Looking. Smile

but why must every child end up in a MacLaren? I don't get that. Umbrella fold strollers with small wheels don't appeal to me at all because they don't suit my lifestyle. I live in the country and drive a car. I don't need a small fold suitable for urban streets. I need large wheels and good suspension.

Thats what has driven my choices really. What suits me at the time. When it stops suiting me I sell and get another one with a different set of criteria.

I am sort of mystified by the buggy obsession in this country. I know you walk a lot more, but it just seems like such a BIG DEAL over here.

I just got buggies and then umbrella strollers off Freecycle. Didn't give a crap about anything but that they were clean and free.

I also have an allergy to other mothers in the sense of going to play groups or the school gate. It's my insecurity really, although I probably try to pass it off as snobbery. But, anyway, looking at what other mums were doing and comparing myself to them was something I always actively avoided.

Strangely I don't really give a shit about pushchairs. Theyre just bloody overpriced pushchairs and do the same thing. I've got more stupid things to waste my money on. I've hardly spent anything on baby things, mostly second hand or the cheapest version if new. Both babies have not suffered because of this.

You know what's funny? Once we're all done with buggies, we'll need something else to cart PE kits, coats, tennis rackets, art projects etc. Enter the shopping trolley. There's already a bit of snobbery about these. As far as I can tell, Rolsner are the Bugaboo of shopping trollies.

Shock

Just watched that youtube video with the woman and the pram.

Jeez. How the hell did the baby survive?! I feel sick just thinking about it :(

My DS2 was bring pushed around today in a 9 year old Maclaren triumph which was already last years model when I bought it for DD -couldn't help noticing all the v expensive buggies in the park. Doubt DS2 is bothered? Don't understand buggy snobbery - could easily afford new one but don't see point Smile

Isn't it also snobby to be all "mines a hundred years old, look at all these silly people spending their money on expensive new prams, as if the children even notice" like quite a few people are doing?

"I could eaaaasily afford one, dear, but buying new prams is beneath me!" is how a few are coming across. That's snobby too.

Report
Sparklingbrook · 14/07/2013 22:07

So. You can't have a new one, you can't have an ancient one, you can't have a posh expensive make or a not posh inexpensive make. What is allowed? Confused
