According to my Mum NOBODY in their right mind would allow their child to wear THIS

I would. I like it and I know DD would! I asked my Mum to make it and she actually laughed out loud! Shock

She said "Who on earth would let their child walk about in THAT!?"

Well actually me! I would! I know it's a bit "dressing up box" but why can't a 5 year old have some fun with her wardrobe? Mum takes ages to knit things as she puts them down a lot....so it would be done for Autumn I expect. She has point blank refused....I told her I'd have to ask MIL then as MIL would knit me a wedding dress if I asked her to though she's not as good as Mum...she will do it whatever she thinks of it.

Anyway...Mum trusts you lot...if I tell her you all say it's ok, then she might do it. Grin So...be honest...DD would like it and she can skip to the shops/park in it with jeans and boots on.

Yes? Or no?

I asked my mum if she could make it. The wool they recommend is American and not available in the UK, plus the quantity required is in hanks. We don't use hanks. Does anyone know what is works out to in balls? And what would be the right yarn to use?

ouryve · 04/06/2013 12:56

I see you've had no reply to this, tallulah - the yarn used is a heavy worsted, or something that would be sold as Aran here, though not a heavy one. There's over 200 projects for this pattern on ravelry which should give a clue about the yarns used and the pictures should help you assess the results of using that yarn. For the amounts, try to match the length - ball bands always have a length given on them, which helps when you make a substitution.

Personally, since a cape is something that needs to drape, I'd risk a decent quality DK, knitted loose on the 5mm needles suggested (this is often done for shawls) Wendy Merino DK is nice and soft and washable (with care) and doesn't break the bank - she might not want to wear it if it was made with a cheaper yarn, which itched.

Something with a bit of bamboo or viscose in might drape nicely, but not too much, or else it would simply sag. Ditto cotton, which is just too heavy and not springy enough. Unless it was purely for play only, acrylic might not drape very well.

Scratch that! (a little bit) The yarn is held double. Use a chunky yarn instead or hold the DK or aran double, as per the instructions! Get over half the length of chunky yarn you calculate from the instructions for your size, as some people have run out of yarn. Hobbycraft is a good place to shop, so you can have a squish of the yarn and hold it against your DD's neck to make sure it doesn't scratch.

i'm gonna have to get my mum to knit some for my dd's too!!

KikeriFreedomCastle · 04/06/2013 13:07

It's really lovely. I'd love to make this.
Ilovegorgeous were selling similar red velvet cloaks last year, and they sold out very quickly.

Thanks ouryve

Oh my goodness, I want one of those capes. I'm sure 8 pages on the discussion has moved on enormously.

My Grandma made my cousin a horse jumper with long wool mane. I was so jealous and then delighted when I got it as a hand me down.
