According to my Mum NOBODY in their right mind would allow their child to wear THIS

I would. I like it and I know DD would! I asked my Mum to make it and she actually laughed out loud! Shock

She said "Who on earth would let their child walk about in THAT!?"

Well actually me! I would! I know it's a bit "dressing up box" but why can't a 5 year old have some fun with her wardrobe? Mum takes ages to knit things as she puts them down a lot....so it would be done for Autumn I expect. She has point blank refused....I told her I'd have to ask MIL then as MIL would knit me a wedding dress if I asked her to though she's not as good as Mum...she will do it whatever she thinks of it.

Anyway...Mum trusts you lot...if I tell her you all say it's ok, then she might do it. Grin So...be honest...DD would like it and she can skip to the shops/park in it with jeans and boots on.

Yes? Or no?

I think it is awful.

It is too twee, not warm or very practical and would have died with embarrassment if my mum had made me wear something like that.

gaggiagirl · 30/05/2013 10:30

Love it my DD shall have a navy blue one please!

Lavenderhoney · 30/05/2013 10:31

How long will it take to knit for a complete beginner? I am inspired at once:)

My dd would love it and I think ds would like one too, just the thing for snuggly warm superheroes.

Wish my mum could still knit, her hands have had it:(

seeker · 30/05/2013 10:33

Honestly- it would be really hard to knit. Make one out of fleece. Or velvet. Lined with something beautiful.

FreudiansSlipper · 30/05/2013 10:35

Reminds me of my hooded ponchos my nanny used to crochet for me it's lovely

Seeker, that's a very good idea.

How hard would it be to sew for a complete beginner without ever having used sewing machine except at school many years ago when I used to squeal with terror at the speed of the needle on the machine when I only touched the peddle? I swear I though my thumb would be sewn.

I can sew buttons though, and mend teddies. ( not totally useless)

Fairyliz · 30/05/2013 10:54

My daughter used to love dressing up as a young child and would have adored this. Shes now 19 and studying fashion at university so watch out for what you are encouraging!

HorryIsUpduffed · 30/05/2013 10:55

It would also be mega expensive to knit in anything but super squeaky acrylic.

You could do a cape from just rectangle shapes suitably gathered.

Is this sufficient reason to hope bump is a girl?

NeoMaxiZoomDweebie · 30/05/2013 10:58

Seeker velvet or fleece would be LOVELY! Good idea! I am going to do it! I sew well and am off to the shops tomorrow!

I will update with my rip off design and show you all I promise.

Mum has continued to refuse to make it despite my showing the thread...she agrees that she was BU to call it ridiculous....but she won't knit that because it looks like a nightmare and she "doesn't do" circular needles."

I will make it better!!

Lavender it wouldn't be simple unless you are good at understanding patterns naturally but saying that it wouldn't be as difficult as some things. Lining it will be a necessity imo or it won't hang nicely....

Horry Mum also said that nice wool for it would be expensive....and squeaky wool is a big no no!

My 8 year old would love that! Good luck OP, not a rip off at all, just a different take on it Wink

If only I could work out how to sew [sigh]

KhaosandKalamity · 30/05/2013 11:06

That is ADORABLE! Sending link to my mother now, no daughter though Sad maybe she will make me one.

worldgonecrazy · 30/05/2013 11:16

Very cute, but capes without arm slits at the front are very impractical.

slug · 30/05/2013 11:26

DD had something similar. Dearly beloved MIL knitted it for her. It had a band of fluffy white wool around the hood so it looked like it was fur lined. We loved it so much she knitted a bigger one when DD grew out of the first one.

HorryIsUpduffed · 30/05/2013 11:27

My guess for nice yarn is that it would be similar quantities to an adult jumper, so £70+ just for the yarn.

CrazyOldCatLady · 30/05/2013 12:42

Ooh, I NEED to crochet DD one of these...

TheBigJessie · 30/05/2013 14:24

Seems nice to me.
I've seen worse stuff going for £15 on the Mothercare clothes racks (and not all of it later ended up on the sale racks).

cheeseslovesme · 30/05/2013 14:29

Aww it is lovely! If my DD was younger i would deffo have her wear it .

mathanxiety · 30/05/2013 14:44

LavenderHoney -- the red fleece hood I made was done from an internet 'pattern' and set of directions. I had a mental block about Home Ec when in school and all I can do is sew straight lines with a machine but the cape for DD4 turned out really well. I used very wide red ribbon folded over the edges and sewn to trim the edges so there was no pesky hemming involved. The tie at the front was made with velcro on ribbon and I did loops of ribbon plus three toggles in the front so no need for buttonholes. I ad libbed the ribbon trim, velcro and toggles. DD4 was 8 when I made it.

mathanxiety · 30/05/2013 14:45

And I didn't line it - when I made it it went down to her knees so it hung well with its own weight.

Lavenderhoney · 30/05/2013 16:05

Thanks! I'm going to have a go over the summer. I shall be staying with mil and I'm sure she has a sewing machine. Hopefully she will find it impossible not to take over:)

DesperatelySeekingSedatives · 30/05/2013 16:09

It's lovely! My DD had one similar when she was a baby. MIL bought it in France and it was so handy and beautifully made Smile if it hadnt have been incredibly girly looking DS would also have worn it!

My sister had her eye on it when she had my neice but I refused to part with it "just incase I ever have another girl of my own or a granddaughter Grin

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 30/05/2013 16:14

my mum made a brown cape for DS2 when he was going through his star wars phase. I have a lovely photo of him wearing it and brandishing his light up and extremely noisy light sabre Smile
