According to my Mum NOBODY in their right mind would allow their child to wear THIS

I would. I like it and I know DD would! I asked my Mum to make it and she actually laughed out loud! Shock

She said "Who on earth would let their child walk about in THAT!?"

Well actually me! I would! I know it's a bit "dressing up box" but why can't a 5 year old have some fun with her wardrobe? Mum takes ages to knit things as she puts them down a lot....so it would be done for Autumn I expect. She has point blank refused....I told her I'd have to ask MIL then as MIL would knit me a wedding dress if I asked her to though she's not as good as Mum...she will do it whatever she thinks of it.

Anyway...Mum trusts you lot...if I tell her you all say it's ok, then she might do it. Grin So...be honest...DD would like it and she can skip to the shops/park in it with jeans and boots on.

Yes? Or no?

Love it, and I'm going to knit it for my DD2 (and probably DD1 - I bet she would want one too!) over the summer. I was looking for a project!

Velve · 29/05/2013 22:20

I have made this for my niece. I love it! Might make it for my son when he's bigger.
I might try working out how to make myself one.

I had a little red cape in the seventies, when I was three, it had blue embroidery, I loved it!

TENDTOprocrastinate · 29/05/2013 22:24

My dd (5) would love this. We've read little red riding hood many times. Kids love dressing up- any time and any place!

TheEndTisHere · 29/05/2013 22:27

I've been sewing for years and I put a red spotted fabric to contrast it, a lace trim around it with jumbo ricrac to tie the front. I was surprised how quick I put it together I was recovering from a torn muscle, really didn't want to do it so I'm still surprised by how long its lasted! Looks so cute on her I love the knitted one but I hate knitting was semi forced to knit as teen get DD to nag DM to make it. Also Debbie bliss does really nice pure cotton balls of DK wool, could end up a little heavier than pure wool but will be able to wash and dry much quicker than pure wool.

TapselteerieO · 29/05/2013 22:27

This type but mine had a hood, I wish I still had it, but it would have been passed on.

oscarwilde · 29/05/2013 22:30

This is fabulous and frankly sounds like your DM could open her own business making them from the response on her. My mum had a red nursing cape from when she was a trainee and as kids we fought over it for years. Nothing like swishing a cape over your shoulder and flouncing out of the roomGrin

Ilovewaleswhenitrains · 29/05/2013 22:35

I think it's lovely. Wish my daughter was little again so I could knit one for her.

MoominsYonisAreScary · 29/05/2013 22:41

It's lovely

MoonlightandRoses · 29/05/2013 22:41

YANBU - any chance she'd do a grown-up one too? Grin

goodasgold · 29/05/2013 22:50

I'm going straight to my MIL with this one. I think its adorable.

landofsoapandglory · 29/05/2013 22:50

I love it.

I would knit one for you, but my stupid joints are playing up and my hands swell so much after knitting squares for the woolly hugs. I hope your mum does do it for your DD.

LifeIsBetterInFlipFlops · 29/05/2013 22:55

It's gorgeous!

Can I ask you all what you would pay for it?

I'm starting a little business selling traditional children's clothing...hence the market research question.

Dozer · 29/05/2013 23:02

Lovely! Wish could nit.

Leafleaflea · 29/05/2013 23:08

I'm tempted to ask DH to get his vasectomy reversed and try for a little girl just so I can get that knitted for her!

sjuperyoni · 29/05/2013 23:21

IT is gorgeous dd1 is 8 and would pretend to be snow white/rrh ds woyld be duperman / spiderman / super bob the builder and dd2 would have it on in her pram to lay on aaaw i want many of them Envy i have needles and wool yet cannot knit. I have a mini sewing machine yet cannot sew. All of you with even an opportunity to have this i am jealous!

Oldraver · 29/05/2013 23:39

Its a lovely thing for a little girl can she knit me one.

DS had a piece of red fleece he wore as a cape for ages. I think young children/ toddler clothes are far too old. The little girl across the road is four and while she looks nice..her clothes are a mini version of her Mums. What happened to the fun and cuteness

rabbitlady · 29/05/2013 23:40

pretty!

Fishlaar · 30/05/2013 00:39

I love it! I'm going to save the pattern for any future GD's I might have. On the other hand with my GS in mind what colour is Batman's cape? Or any other superhero types. Grin

Slavetothechild · 30/05/2013 00:42

I'd wear it now and I'm 47!!! Showed 21 year old daughter she liked it too :) tell your mum she acting like a big bad wolf lol ;)

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 30/05/2013 00:44

I love it too, and I am going to send this to my Mum and ask her to make one for my DD's fifth birthday. Thanks, OP.

Primafacie · 30/05/2013 01:12

Lifeisbetter -I think somewhere in the 15 to 30 quid range. The cheaper the better, natch. Unless you find a way of marketing it upscale, eg by buying advertising in the Angels and Urchins magazine, in which case some clueless Kensington mums will pay £60 for it.
HTH :)

xylem8 · 30/05/2013 01:17

i hate to rain on the parade..sweet though they may be, capes and hoods are both a notorius strangulation risk when playing and climbing.

Bogeyface · 30/05/2013 01:23

I made a Red Riding Hood cape from fleece when DD1 was in infants for World Book Day (yes, I was that mother!). It has been in the dressing up box ever since and has been the most popular item in there.

Fleece is so easy to sew as it doesnt need hemming if you cut it carefully and is easy to hand sew. Butterick and Simplicity both do patterns.
